The United States emphasizes business more than European countries, this is reflected by the different legislation passed. A few primary economic factors contribute to the wage gap being wider in the U.S. The first being European countries have a smaller separation between total low-wage and high-wage earnings than the U.S. regardless of gender. Meaning the professions that earn the highest wages are significantly more than the lower wage earning professions compared to Europe. Another factor leading to the wage gap is the difference of interests between men and women ,these factors include career decisions, choice of study and life choices (Granqvist and Regnér 2003, Machin and Puhani 2003).

This cannot really be said because they cannot be compared to men because “black women are not as disadvantaged relative to white women as black men are disadvantaged relative to white men.” Yes, women of color tend to occupy the lowest positions in the labor market they earn the lowest wages have the least authority in the workplace and are more concentrated in “bad Jobs” than any other group. Even though there is an Elimination Act of all forms of discrimination against women in 1979 the United States still continue to bridge a gap in wages. When you look at the wage gap you can clearly see the difference in gender and it is much worse for people of color. The wage gap is not just a gender issue it also affects racial minorities. Asian American women experience the smallest gender pay gap. The Hispanic and Latina women had the largest gap with 54 percent of what the white men were paid in 2013. The gender pay gap for American Indian and Alaska Native women has went down to 60 and 59 percent in 2013. As for African American women they are paid 64 percent of what white men were paid in 2013 and white women were paid 78 percent of what white men were paid ( Catherine, H). The wage gap continues to stretch farther and farther apart. A wage gap is the ratio difference between the top twenty and lower twenty percent of income levels. The United States is a leading example of a differentiating income levels. A recent study by Harvard students, showed the United States pay gap ratio from CEO’s to average workers is around 350:1. This is a ridiculous difference in pay, especially when there are millions of people underneath the poverty level. The differences in wages being described is solely targeting skill level and is not referring to any other factors like gender, race, social class, and etc. Society has been dealing with income inequality for thousands of years. This means that in the United States, females earned 94 cents on average to every dollar earned by males. According to one study by the Department of Labor’s Chief Economist, a typical 25-year-old woman working full time would earn $5,000 less over the course of her working career than a typical 25-year old man working in the same career. The reason why this pay gap exists does expand into other factors such as education, experience, the work being performed, qualifications, age, and ethnicity which are taken into account. The studies being conducted on the pay gap has economists verifying that discrimination is the best overall explanation and factor of the difference in pay between males and females.
The pay gap stems from traditionalized views of life that have not changed for decades. A recent article by the Los Angeles Times states, “It’s discriminatory because the differences were almost certainly the result of gender bias,” The pay gap has not changed throughout time, which emphasizes the lasting effect of sexism. Gender bias is introduced very young in children, and they grow up with ideas, believing them to be true. This causes a large problem among young and single mothers who do not have another income to support them.
