English Term 2 Dare to Fall in Love: Romeo and Juliet’s Tragedy
In the prologue of Romeo and Juliet, William Shakespeare wrote, “From forth the fatal loins of these two foes/ A pair of star-crossed lovers take their life.” (Lines 5-6). According to astrological aphorisms, human destiny and fate is established by the stars and “star-crossed lovers” refer to a pair of lovers that are destined to “cross” paths and fall in love, but they will end tragically. Similarly, Shakespeare emphasizes that the relationship between Romeo and Juliet (the main characters) will be thwarted by bad luck and unfortunate incidents abound. Romeo, a Montague and Juliet, a Capulet are ill-fated lovers from two leading families who stand in perpetual animosity to each other. He explores the essence of fate, youthful love and family rivalry in his play set in medieval Verona.

Mercutio’s death plays a key role in Romeo’s actions subsequent to it. As stated in Act 3, Scene 1, lines 94-97, “Romeo, away, be gone!/ The citizens are up, and Tybalt slain./ Stand not amazed. The Prince will doom thee death/ If thou art taken. Hence, be gone, away!” Romeo is blinded by the rage over Mercutio’s death, he kills Tybalt in return to avenge his best friend. He has reached a point of no return. Benvolio, Romeo’s cousin knows that Romeo is responsible for the fall of Tybalt and so he urges him to run. Mercutio’s love for Romeo resulted in his death and in return, Romeo kills Tybalt for killing his best friend.
In conclusion, “Romeo and Juliet” reflects upon the deadliness of love in various ways. Romantic love, friendship and family is all something to die for and this is delineated by some characters in the play. The rivalry families despise each other deeply due to an ancient grudge. However, the characters risk their lives for their loved ones. Stop hating and start
. Firstly, Tybalt is to blame for Mercutio’s death as he actually gave him the wound that killed him. Also, Tybalt provokes Mercutio by insulting Romeo, ‘Thou art a villain.’ This is one of the biggest insults that Tybalt can give and would usually be followed by a duel. However, Romeo calmly replies by saying ‘Villain I am none / Therefore farewell. I see thou know’st me not.’ Because Romeo is not defending his honour, Mercutio is provoked by Tybalt’s insults and starts insulting Tybalt himself. This is what leads to the two of them fighting and Mercutio getting his fatal wound. So, if Tybalt didn’t insult Romeo or fight Mercutio, Mercutio wouldn’t have been killed.
Mercutio’s death works as a catalyst for the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet. From the moment that Mercutio is stabbed by Tybalt, the actual tragedy aspect of the play begins. Up to Mercutio’s death, the play follows a rather light-hearted, dramatized tone, but once his death plays out, the plot turns to focus on the misfortunes of the rest of the characters. Following Mercutio’s death, Romeo hints at the disasters to come by saying, “This day’s black fate on more days doth depend. This but begins the woe others must end (3.1.124-125)”. Moments after Mercutio’s death, Romeo is already aware of what troubles will arise. As Mercutio is held as Romeo’s stability, Romeo knows that something will begin from the end of Mercutio. As Mercutio’s death plays out, both Mercutio and Romeo are correct in the sense of their knowledge of Mercutio’s death being held as a catalyst, even if no one else does. If Romeo had died in the fight rather than Mercutio, the tragedy would not have happened, as Mercutio is more levelheaded than Romeo, and would have made sure the situation
In contrast, Mercutio attempts to stop Tybalt’s thirst for vengeance when he tries to duel Romeo but ultimately gets killed in the process of trying to save his good friend from being killed by Tybalt which causes Romeo to take vengeance upon Tybalt by killing him.
Of all the things that occur in Romeo and Juliet, the death of Tybalt is one of the most climatic parts of the story. Yet, this all started from another killing of a different person, Mercutio. Mercutio, a relative of the Prince and friend of Romeo, and Tybalt, nephew to Lady Capulet and Mercutio’s arch enemy, were in a heated conversion when Romeo walked in after getting married to Juliet and saw what was going on. Tybalt and Mercutio began to fight and Romeo tried to come in between them to stop the whole thing. Unfortunately, as Tybalt was under Romeo’s arms, he stabbed Mercutio and he died soon after. In all the rage, Romeo was furious that his friend was dead and starts to fight with Tybalt.
Star-crossed lovers are partners whose love lives are destined to fail due to fate. In the play Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, it is said that two star-crossed lovers are initially unable to be together since their families have an ancient, long-term feud. With this prolonged hatred towards each other, anyone from the Montague and Capulet families cannot be together. However, Romeo and Juliet attempt to bypass this because of their strong and intense love for each other. By the end of the play, Romeo and Juliet have committed suicide. Romeo and Juliet’s passing did not happen coincidentally. Although there may be many people to blame for this, the blame of the fall of Romeo and Juliet is most likely Friar Laurence. Friar Laurence
When Mercutio first appears in Act 1, Scene 4, he, Romeo, and Benvolio are preparing to go to Capulet’s masquerade. Romeo does not want to participate, but Mercutio convinces him (I, iv. 41-42). Romeo agrees to participate, recognizing that he may not be entirely in control of his future (I, iv. 112-113). In the next scene, Romeo meets Juliet, creating the main storyline of the play. It is obvious that this would have only occurred due to Mercutio’s influence; Romeo would not have taken part if Mercutio had not convinced him to. Romeo was feeling too dejected, and would have sat on the sidelines instead. The other major example of Mercutio’s influence in the play is exhibited in the scene in which he dies. Tybalt challenges Romeo to a duel, who declines; Romeo does not want to fight his cousin. Tybalt, however, sees this as an insult and questions Romeo’s honour. Mercutio stands up for him, and Tybalt and Mercutio fight. Romeo attempted to stop them, but he is too late; Tybalt stabbed Mercutio, before fleeing the scene. With his dying breaths, Mercutio blames Romeo for his wound, saying “…Why the devil came you between us? I was hurt under your arm.” (III, i. 98-99). Romeo realizes that Mercutio’s wound truly was his fault, and his grief is made worse when he finds that Mercutio has died. Tybalt returns to find Romeo wracked with grief. To avenge his fallen friend, Romeo challenges Tybalt to a duel, which Romeo quickly wins. There is no question that this would have happened if Mercutio had not been killed; after all, Tybalt was Romeo’s cousin, if only for a couple of hours. In this scene, Mercutio not only influences Romeo, but with his death at Tybalt’s hands leads Romeo to kill Tybalt. In addition, Mercutio influenced the members of the Capulet family as well. Lastly, Mercutio’s death lead to a string
In the prologue, a brief overview of the whole play is given by the Chorus, which states, “A pair of star-cross’d lovers take their life;/ Whole misadventured piteous overthrows/ Do with their death bury their parents’ strife” (Prologue 6-8). “Star-cross’d lovers”, a term first coined by Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, is a term to describe two lovers whose relationship will bear unfortunate outcomes because of the alignment of the stars. Shakespeare hints that fate is manipulating and controlling Romeo and Juliet’s relationship because the couple’s fate has been prewritten in the stars.
The audience is first introduced to the word in the opening prologue before the play even begins in which Shakespeare states that, “A pair of star-crossed lovers take their life,” (THE PROLOGUE. 6). For Romeo and Juliet to be characterized as “star-crossed lovers,” means that the stars were not aligned in their favor when it comes to love. To believe in astrology means that you think that the stars have an effect on your life and they can even cause and predict certain events that happen in a person’s life. The idea of Romeo and Juliet living happily together forever was impossible because of their feuding families. The fact that Romeo and Juliet are even mentioned as “star-crossed lovers” before the actual play starts shows how their fate was predetermined.
In William Shakespeare’s tragedy Romeo and Juliet, the two lovers experience misfortune all caused by their lust and hastiness. The play talks about the two star crossed lovers trying to have their love blossom into something beautiful. Even though the lovers are around age thirteen and completely grasp the concept of love in relationships. Romeo and Juliet meet at the Capulet party, after that moment they are inseparable. Like all long lasting relationships, the lovers bump into each other and the next day they are married. From the start the lovers have opposition, whether that be from their families or their impatient nature. Romeo and Juliet claim to be in love, even though Romeo yearned to be with Rosaline, Juliet and Romeo only recently met, and they both jump to conclusions.
Romeo and Juliet is a famous play about love and tragedy written by William Shakespeare in 1597. He is also known as England’s most famous playwright and poet. The play is about two feuding families who have an ‘ancient grudge’ with each other and two ‘star crossed lovers’ who fall in love and commit suicide. This essay will show the range of conflict from emotional to physical conflict.

In the love tragedy of Romeo and Juliet by Shakespeare, the nurse, Juliet’s caregiver, suggests that love should be cherished for the sexual intercourse and the fun of it. Lady Capulet, Juliet’s mother, explains that a handsome, wealthy man with the name of Paris is requesting to marry Juliet. The Nurse interrupts with excitement, “A man, young lady–lady, such a man as all the world–why he’s a man of wax” (1.3.81-82). The nurse describes Paris as a “man as all the world,” since she cannot seem to find the right use of words to describe him, revealing that she is overwhelmed with his perfection. She refers to him as a “man of wax,” suggesting that his complexions are as flawless as if he were to be sculpted from the smooth substance. Later on,
Love is the forceful attraction between two people blossomed from desire and intimacy. Lust is physical manifestation of what many would call love, but in reality this feeling can bend the will of any man and woman alike. Lust is power, it is passion, and it can motivate. One thing love and lust has in common: they have the ability to kill. Thus tragedy strikes a wary, yet inevitable, sentiment every person experiences at least once in their lifetime.
Shakespeare portrays Romeo and Juliet as "star-crossed lovers," doomed by fate to a tragic end.
