Nursing as a profession has provided many opportunities for me to grow not only in my current practice, but also in my foundation of nursing. I have observed healthcare from an inside point of view as a registered nurse, as well as from the patient/family perspective in my personal life. During each shift, I witness the major impact that education has on preventative measures of health. I would like to be a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) so I can utilize the clinical skills I have gained as a bedside nurse to provide a better understanding of health for patients and their loved ones. I believe that these goals will help me have a role in improving and impacting the well-being of a diverse patient population. When I was in high school, my mother was diagnosed with base of the tongue carcinoma. In one day, my father was diagnosed with congestive heart failure, diabetes mellitus type II, and hypertension during an emergent visit to the hospital. My parents and I had to adjust to the intricacies of their medical diagnoses and health issues. Nurse practitioners guided us through education and encouraged an inclusive role in their plans of care. My unit has quarterly skills labs, as well as in-services, that stress the importance of enhancing evidence based practice used in our care. Evidence based measures we utilize include the usage of an anticoagulant in addition to a statin to reduce the reoccurrence of stroke and stressing the importance of rehabilitation therapy services. Many of my patients are unable to effectively communicate their needs due to decreased neurological status, so I use my role as a nurse to advocate for them by collaborating with physicians, pharmacists, and case managers to ensure they receive proper and effective
