Ralph Waldo Emerson, the father of transcendentalism, was known for his writing being filled with many small memorable statements that stand out to the reader and have a lot of meaning. These aphorisms can be found in multiple pieces of writing by him. Whether they are about following your own instincts like in his essay “Self Reliance” or about the value of true friends which is found in his essay “Friendship”, Emerson’s words are always packed with lots of meaning. In his essay “Self Reliance” Emerson said “A man is relieved and gay when he has put his heart into his work and has done his best; but what he has said or done otherwise, shall give him no peace.” This quote reminds me of the satisfaction one has when they put their all into their work and are proud of it. Personally, I know that if I slack on something like an assignment and don’t live up to my personal moral standards I won’t be happy with it or myself. This quote really resonates with me as I have had both the “glass thread” and “frost-work” friends but also friends who really are the “solidest thing [I] know.” This quote is so very important because you really need to find those people who are the solidest thing you know and will stick with
