‘Fear Constructs our Reality’

Fear is one of the strongest emotions for every human being; like love or hate it can distort our mind, causing us to not think or act logically in different circumstances. Fear, like the fear of speaking in public, can effect each individual differently; some of us are able to control this fear and speak confidently and clear to a large group, where others of us freeze and let it take control of our body; confusing our mind to make the situation more difficult than it really is. It is at this point of the movie, one can see Nina has transformed from an innocent girl to a very delusional and paranoid psychopath, just from her subjective reality taking over, caused from fear. Just before the last scene of the movie, Nina finds out that she did not even confront Lily in her dressing room; this is where she is even more confused, not knowing what is real or not, when all she wanted to be was “perfect”. In this particular text, we are lead to believe that her fear caused a ballerina to lose her life, however; it is true to say that fear had a major influence on the way she saw particular events.

It is also through the character of Dorothy from Robert Drewe’s Memoirs ‘The Shark Net’, that it is evident that her decisions and perception of her surroundings have been influenced due to a fear of not having control of her environment; which has been instilled since being a mother. As we get to know Robert’s mother, we find that as a young adult, she was a very sporty and social kind of person but as she entered Motherhood, she had to throw all this away and became an overprotective mother. Her fear of not being in control has been developed from “[the new] strange hot, dry place [they were living in, and being a] mother, she was taking no chances”. From her new developed fear from moving, she created “more rules”, for precautions, as her mind no longer thought the place she was
