Part One: Fieldwork Research Question and Literature (Worth 20 Points)
Fieldwork Background Description On my level 1B fieldwork experience this October I went to a school based setting. Occupational therapy in a school based setting involves the therapist working with children who qualify for an individualized education program (IEP). These children must be in the age range of three to twenty one, and have a disability that effects their education in order to qualify for the IEP. The IEP allows the student to receive services from the school based team which may consist of an occupational, physical, and speech therapist depending on the child’s needs. Within this school district I traveled with the occupational therapist to different schools to see children of varying ages. The age group I was able to spend the most time with ranged from children that were four to eight years old. The children in this age group came from the following schools WL Johns, Truman Kindergarten, and Roosevelt Elementary. Since I was able to spend the most time at these locations with this age group I decided to make these children the primary population that I’m targeting for my research proposal. With this population the occupational therapist used many techniques to help the children stay on task during the treatment sessions. While observing I noticed that some of the children were distracted by objects in the room, other activities that were laid out for their session, or other children while in the classroom setting. Some of the children became upset when they didn’t know what was going to happen next, or when they didn’t like doing a certain activity. An example of this consisted of the child getting up from their seat to pick up an object for an activity planned for later in the session followed by therapist redirection which upset the child when they had to go back to the task they were previously doing. This scenario was demonstrated by multiple children, it slowed down the progression of therapy and decreased the therapy sessions overall productivity. This is a problem because it took away from the treatment time and the child/children became less cooperative. To help prepare the child for the different tasks a picture schedule was used. A picture schedule is a tool that uses pictures, symbols, or words to demonstrate a task or tasks that are going to take place. During the months of September and October this semester I spent time at two different schools in four different classrooms. Being able to observe different classes and teachers at Westside Junior High and South Live Oak Elementary was a very new and exciting experience for me since I can’t say I’ve always wanted to be a teacher. My experiences at these schools gave me a better insight into the differences between schools, classrooms, and teachers. On May 2, 2012, the National Football League lost one of its elite players to suicide: Junior Seau. Seau played for the Chargers, Dolphins, and the Patriots during his professional football career and was a 12-time Pro Bowler before retiring in 2009. It is not difficult to figure out what the liberal arts are; all it took was a simple google search and the definition was brought up instantly. Liberal arts are academic subjects such as literature, philosophy, mathematics, and social and physical sciences as distinct from professional and technical subjects. I am not majoring in any of these subjects and I hardly have any classes such as these in my schedule so I decided I needed to look up definitions that actually pertain to me. When I first heard of liberal arts schools, I thought of institutions like Julliard where students who want to study the arts attend. I pictured students painting on canvas, dancers leaping across stage, and musicians composing beautiful music. Since beginning my college visitations, I have come to realize that is far from what you will see at liberal arts colleges such as Loras. A liberal arts education not only touches on the arts but also the areas of history, science, math, language, and several more. Throughout my first thirteen years of schooling, I have taken classes covering many different subjects. Liberal arts schools continue to encourage one to learn about topics in various areas of study in order to obtain a more rounded education.
The place where I completed my field assignment was a private program. Inside the classroom, there were 16 6-8 years old with two teachers. KW was the lead teacher and MS was the assistant. The program runs five days a week from 7:45-4:45. A fourth of the students in the class had IFSP/IEPs.
Occupational Therapists within the school system are there to aid the IEP team and student. The goal is to help the student to perform tasks independently. The OT in the school is to help the student to prepare and perform learning and school-related activities (American Occupational Therapy Association, 2010). The OT is to work on goals related to their education. The OT is there to support the students in academic and non-academic roles within the school. These skills would be anywhere from social skills, math, behavior, recess and other aspects to the students school day. The OT helps the student engage in activities, succeed within the school environment with the academic focus, which is to improve the student’s fine motor skills. These skills are to help aid in cutting, writing, reading, and provide educational services and sensory skills. They support ideas within the learning community and classroom and can provide some daily living, such as hand washing and toileting. OT’s are active in the IEP collaboration and will provide help with the student on the
To be honest, I never knew of the term occupational therapy until a few years ago. It was new to me as it was to many others who were unfamiliar to the word. I briefly came across the discipline when I was volunteering my time at my mother’s preschool while in high school. I spent my hours with young children, some living with disabilities. Sometimes the students were being pulled out of the classroom for brief periods of time. I was curious to know where they were going and was told some of the children were going to either physical, speech, or occupational therapy. I was already familiar to physical and speech therapy, but I had no clue what occupational therapy was about. That was the moment when I was introduced to occupational therapy.

The seven liberal arts included three basic arts focused on developing a felicity with language: grammar, rhetoric, and dialectic. There were four advanced mathematical-physical arts: geometry, arithmetic, music, and astronomy, who were known as quadrivim” (Roche, 5).

In the United States, starting salaries for teachers who have completed a four-year degree are far lower compared to many other professions, which also require a four-year degree. In most states, teachers must undergo testing and other rigorous certification requirements, but they are given the same consideration or status as beginning professionals in other areas. Although attractive incentives are offered, the compensation does not compare to the long hours of work and schooling required for a teaching career.
Union Elementary School is home to Perrysburg Preschool, where I did my observation and job shadowing. Union elementary is located in Maumee, Ohio although the school itself is part of the Perrysburg school district, In Northwest Ohio. Though this is a public school, all pre-school programs in this school feature both children with developmental delays and are on IEPs, as well as children that are considered on track, developmentally. IEPs, or Individualized Education Programs, are defined as special education services that is required by law. This is a document that lays out a child’s learning needs and services that the school provides to help said student succeed. By incorporating children that not only are on IEPs, but also children considered up to date developmentally, this allows for those children on IEPs to see themselves as equals, and those who are up to date to become familiar with these children who are living with special needs, seeing them as equals. One of the teachers in this pre-school, as well as therapy specialist for those children who need it, is Cathie France. For this job shadowing assignment I observed her both in the classroom with the children and during therapy sessions with individual children.
