Fighting For The Pursuit Of Happiness

For that reason many people believe that the best thing to do is “play possum” and wait for the conflict to fix itself. However, they are wrong. When faced with a conflict it is important to stand up for your beliefs. To explain, “What all these victims need above all is to know that they are not alone; that we are not forgetting them, that when their voices are stifled we shall lend them ours, that while their freedom depends on ours, the quality of our freedom depends on theirs” (Wiesel 418). Here, Wiesel explains that one’s freedom can depend on someone else speaking up for what they believe in. One’s ability to speak up can influence a vast number of things and even help them avoid making bad decisions. For example, “Certainly, courage is sometimes a matter of life and death” (Courage as a Skill). It is important to be courageous and speak your mind because it can save others from making choices that will affect them negatively later. “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that ALL men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” As you know these words come from the preamble of the Declaration of Independence, perhaps one of the greatest documents ever written. However, I do have a little problem with the last four words sentence, “the pursuit of Happiness” because I believe it actually sends an easily misinterpreted message.

Why is it important for people to stand up for what they believe in? People who do stand up for what they believe in get pushed around. In the United States of America, it is legal to stand up for any beliefs, as long as they are not causing physical harm to another individual, taking advantage of someone’s rights, or interfering with government operations. If these things happen, it will result in a fine or jail time.

Every other Monday morning the workers of the fast food restaurant next door line up in my lobby waiting to cash their paychecks. There is a wide range of ages, races, and sexes; there is no one demographic in the lobby. The conversations are about coworkers not present or about their spouses. They complain about the long shifts or an angry customer they encountered in the drive up this morning. One young woman discusses her daughter’s adventures at kindergarten. There are complaints of the cost of car repairs or a visit to the hospital last week. There are questions of who is working tonight and what time does the bus come, all of these conversations could be happening in any bank lobby anywhere in the United States. The noise level continues to rise in the lobby as more workers enter the building, the energy in the lobby rises as the excitement of the workers increases, today is payday. Or is it anxiety? Are their thoughts, masked behind idle chit chat, of how am I going to pay rent and feed my family? How am I going to make this pay last for two weeks? These fellow humans are the full time working poor.

In this occasion, large groups of people would congregate and march with the demand of legalized gay marriage. All the people marching had one objective which was to have the freedom to make their own choice when it comes to who they marry. Instead of being the followers in society it is time for you to become leaders, thus you must preserve your own freedoms. Many of you may disagree with gay marriage, but these people have fought for their freedom to make a decision based on who they are and you must respect that. In the case of people fighting for legalized gay marriage, they are trying to preserve their own individual freedoms of marrying who they are sexually attracted to.

I believe it is important to fight for what you believe in, no matter the cost, because Harriet Tubman rescued 300 slaves, Frederick Douglass spoke out for the rights of slaves, and Martin Luther King Jr. organized the SCLC to oppose racial segregation. Tubman went to the south many times just to save her kind from their misery. In the article it says, “In total, she rescued about 300 slaves.” She had risked her life for an important cause even if it cost her life. Another hero, Frederick Douglas, was a person that many people looked up too. He was a powerful speaker and countless numbers of black citizens believed in. Everyone should stand up for what they believe in no matter the consequences. Throughout history and even right now in the present, people and myself have seen people stand up for what they believe in.

“Stand up for what you believe in, even if it means standing alone,” this quote with an unknown author states a saying that could help save a person from being bullied, abused, or liberate a life to suicide. It is no question that every person should stand up for what they believe in, yet some are held back by moral cowardness.

For our Economics subject, we watched The Pursuit of Happyness, a movie based on Chris Gardner, a salesman who was not making that much money and eventually experiences homelessness with his five-year old son. He faces problems when his wife is unwilling to accept his goal to become a stockbroker and leaves him. However, he perseveres even under all this stress.

As Americans, we have the right to protest, and make vocal anything in our society which with we do not agree. We see it happening everywhere today in our country, as people stand for or against movements including LGBT, abortion, Black Lives Matter, and even the recent presidential election. We the people are the only individuals who can make change in this great nation. The only way we can improve this country is by protesting and supporting movements that we find to be just. It is important to stand up for what we believe to be right, because it is our only way of making others aware of how we feel about a certain issue.
