The song I will be analyzing for figurative language and connotation is Fireworks by Katy Perry. It was a hit pop song in 2010. The meaning behind this song is telling the reader to believe in themselves and don’t be afraid to be who they truly are. These lyrics I have chosen for this analysis are related to the central idea of the song because they show how someone is not confident but towards the end, someone finds a spark in that person that makes them who they are. A connotation is a word that has an effect on the reader’s point of view. Figurative Language is how writers produce an image for the reader through their writing. Two common example of figurative language is similes and metaphors. An example of connotation used in this song
2-3 Specific elements of figurative language the author uses to convey this theme are: Alliteration, Metaphor.
In chapter one of the novel, Anthem, by Ayn Rand, the author incorporates figurative language to develop the characters and the setting. The first example that portrays figurative language is, “The walls are cracked and water runs upon them in thin threads without sound, black and glistening as blood.” This example uses a metaphor to compare the water on the walls to glistening blood. In return, the readers can get a visual of the rooms setting and what the walls look like. Another example from chapter one is, “Their hair was white and their faces were cracked as the clay of a dry river bed.”
A great example of figurative language was on page 37, “We were withered trees in the heart of the desert”. This is one of the many metaphors the author uses throughout the text to give the reader a visual representation. He compared the Jews to withered trees to show how exhausted and drained they were. Instead of saying, “they were exhausted”, which is just a broad
Figurative language can help the author make a point. An author can use specific types of figurative language to convey a certain point which in the long run can express the purpose of an author’s work. Personification gives life like characteristics “ The fire was out to get her” (Walls). This personification shows her attachment with fire and the fear it causes her it also helps the reader connect with the writing letting the author better convey the purpose.
Authors use figurative language to describe the objects and characters in the stories. In the passage “Uncle Timothy’s Ships,” by Summer Woodford, figurative language reveals the significance of the bottled ships, Woodford reveals the significance of the bottled ships by using metaphors, extended metaphors, and personification. The first piece of figurative language that Summer Woodford uses are metaphors. A metaphor is to compare two things without using like or as.
Figurative language is a language that uses words or expressions with a meaning that is different from the literal interpretation. When the author uses literary language, he or she is stating the facts as they are. Figurative language is very common in poetry, and is also used in prose and nonfiction as well. In the stories “The Treasure of Lemon Brown” by Walter Dean Myer and “ The Contender” by Robert Lipsyte the authors use figurative language to describe the mood, setting, and the characters.
Figurative language is language that which expressions with a different meaning from what it may seem like at if taken literally. By using figurative language, it allows for authors to better develop points, ideas, actions, or scenery. In the stories “Canyons” written by Gary Paulsen and “Treasure of Lemon Brown” written by Walter Dean Myers the authors use figurative language to develop the scene and characters in a creative way and more interesting way for the reader.
Figurative language is a main component in showcasing the emotions the characters reveal. An example being when the author writes “ The children huddled up to her and breathed like little calves waiting at the bars in the twilight.” This portrays the children's emotions with more emphasis and really shows how they watched everything Granny Weatherall did with precision. This type of writing really helps the reader understand what is going on within the characters and their actions. The author also displays figurative language in the way she describes how John would be in the situation of them still being together. She describes him as being more of a child, rather than taking a parent role.
Figurative language is used to make literature and poetry more interesting. Authors use figurative language to spice up their writing so ideas can be expressed with a new and exciting approach. Figurative language can and should be applied in our creative writing. It allows us and the reader to have fun in the process!
Figurative Language is the art of using figures of speech, loaded words, appeals, etc. they are used to have more of an impact and to persuade the listeners to join your side. in his speech, Patrick Henry tried to appeal to the audience by bringing up God into
One example of a figurative language O’Brien uses is imagery by Rat describing the compound.. “The compound was situated at the top of a flat - crested hill along the northern outskirts of Tra Bong.” (87). For this piece of imagery, O’Brien is telling the audience what the layout of the compound looks like and how it’s designed. Another example of a figurative language I found in the reading is a simile. In the story, Rat describes this girl who he saw and what he thinks about her. “She had long white legs and blue eyes and a complexion like strawberry ice cream.” (89). This simile is having O’Brien describe what Bell looks like and why the other soldiers think she’s so beautiful. A third figurative language that was used in this story was imagery. When Bell would ask a question, O’Brien described her actions while listening. “Then she’d squint and
A freezing winter breeze prowls into the skin of a pubescent twelve year old, leaving his breath visible to his naked eye. All amidst butterflies maneuver in his stomach. Using few words and variations of figurative languages like the example above from “Oranges” by Gary Soto, authors alike can construct a powerful and vivid image of their novels. When people speak literally, their words lack the imagination that literary devices crate. In turn, readers lose the ability to capture the tone that the writer or the author’s characters are trying to convey. Figurative language is the gateway to an author's mind and allows others to interpret the novelist’s way of thinking. Although everyone thinks differently, figurative language is a “language” that everyone can understand. Utilizing the different symbols in “Oranges”, Gary soto harnesses figurative language to strengthen his poem and expresses the feelings of a young boy in love, as he adventures through his first date.
Examples of a figurative languages is Onomatopoeia. It is used when Cynthia was confessing about how she had a gambling problem after she broke up with her girlfriend. Fat Amy reacted by saying “Whoomp there it is!” The use of onomatopoeia creates a sense of emotion. Moreover, idioms were also used in this film. An example could be when Fat Amy was auditioning for the acapella group and after her performance, she said “crushed it”. She said that to convey a message that she felt that she performed really well. Foreshadowing was used at the very start of the movie where Aubrey throws up during her solo in the ICCA’s performance which then leads the group to fail. This foreshadows that the Bellas have to work hard to redeem themselves the next
When a book has figurative language, the reader is able to visualize and understand more in depth what the author is trying to say. There is one amazing example in a book written by Markus Zusak called The Book Thief. “The plane was still coughing. Smoke was leaking from both its lungs. When it crashed, three deep gashed was made in the earth.
Katy Perry takes a similar approach by creating a song that allows people to be the way they are. Katy Perry had created the song “Fireworks.“ This song is an inspirational song that allows people to reveal themselves to the true world instead of keeping it a secret. Katy is trying to portray the fact that people should not be afraid to represent the way they truly are. She wants everyone to show his or her “true colors“. In a sense, Katy wants to people to embrace what they are. In the first few lines she states, “Do you ever feel like a plastic bag. Drifting through the wind. Wanting to start again“ (Fireworks). This part of the song reveals that a lot of people go with the flow. They just follow the norms of society and do not fight against it. She continues on to talk about how people continue to go with the flow until she states, “Do you know that there 's still a chance for you. 'Cause there 's a spark in you“ (Fireworks). This portion of the song reveals there is hope even if want to go against the norm. Just a small push is needed in order to get over the hurdle. Then Katy states, “ 'Cause baby you 're a firework. Come and show 'em what you 're worth. Make 'em go "oh, oh, oh! As you shoot across the sky-y-y“ (Fireworks). When you do reveal yourself, it will feel like a huge burden is lifted off your shoulders. Katy is trying to say to her fans be motivated and keep reaching for the stars. Being unique might be a bad thing, but don‘t let their voice reach you.
