The story takes place in two countries: Norrønur and Ymiria. The time period isn’t mentioned specifically, but I can infer that it takes place about the time that the Vikings traveled the world. The main character, Karn, is from Norrønur. He is the eldest son in his family, which means that when his father dies, he will become the “hauld” or the leader of the family and farm. The only
Gustav Vasa found himself in a very lucky situation with the decline of the Hansa and the start of the Danish civil war. With this break, Gustav had time to develop a strong centralized state which dealt with internal revolts and the Dacke War, which was a peasant uprising. Gustav's new centralized state also dealt with other Swedish affairs such as: making the change to protestantism, taking church property to pay off debts, as well as making the monarchy hereditary instead of elective.

Denmark then joined the alliance Britain Britain. The continental powers blockaded Britain, and as a counter to this Britain blockaded Norway. The twin blockade was a catastrophe to Norway preventing their timber exports, which had been largely to Britain, and preventing their grain imports from Denmark. An economic crisis in Norway followed with the people suffering hunger and extreme poverty. In 1813 Sweden attacked Denmark from the south and, at the treaty of Kiel in January 1814, Denmark handed over Norway to Sweden.
