My very first impression of Emanu-El was walking up to a security guard. Although at first glance it didn't seem very welcoming, my perspective would soon change. The security guard was one of the most friendly security guards I’ve ever met. Since I was a little flustered about being in a synagogue for the first time, I asked him if there was any sign in spot for students from USF. The security guard said in an extremely friendly manner that he didn’t know anything about USF but he would be happy to point me in the direction of the rabbi’s sanctuary or to the main reception room. It was this type of warm welcome that I thought that everyone in the congregation of emmanuel-el had. The people whom I met all smiled at me and gave me an extremely warm welcome. It wasn't’ just the people either, almost every aspect of the synagogue felt like it was welcoming and very progressive. It was very interesting to see how such a traditional looking synagogue and new ideas could mingle so well together. …show more content…
The meme that he read said “Only a few thousand more thoughts and prayers needed to save the victims of Hurricane Harvey”. The meme was trying to be satirical by saying that thoughts and prayers were useless. I had fully expected for the rabbi to start condemning the meme and the message it stood for but he didn’t. Instead, the rabbi actually said that the meme brought up a good point. He expressed that even though thoughts and prayers can help, actions are going to be what saves the victims of the hurricane. If I had gone to any more traditional place of worship - such as my grandmother's church - I probably would’ve been spanked if I had been spreading those ideas. To hear the rabbi even talking about a meme was extremely surprising. Perhaps the fact that jewish ritual takes precedence over belief influenced this attitude toward the
In Chris Jones’s biography “Roger Ebert: The Essential Man” (2010), Jones narrates that Ebert’s life has changed dramatically due to medical conditions. Jones gives details in chronological order from when Ebert discovered his cancer to when he was finally cured. Jones’s purpose for writing this article is to describe a famous critics life in order to show the effects of his cancer on his life. The intended audience would be anyone interested in the effects of cancer or Roger’s personal experience with cancer.
Comparison between Al Pacino and Robert De Niro Al Pacino and Robert De Niro are considered greatest actors in the film history. They have been admired by their extraordinary performances and characters. They have the traits in sameness and also in difference. Let me share the similarities and distinctions between these two legendary figures. First of all, they have several coincidental similarities.
Should we as a society set a monetary value on life, or let it exist on an emotional level? Are the accomplishments we achieve and the money we make throughout our lifetime the only things that determine what our life is worth after death; or should it be based on the value that the individual put upon their own experiences. In contemporary American Society, this question remains to be asked when someone loses their life. In the excerpt from Chris Jones’ “Roger Ebert: The Essential Man” The struggles which Ebert Endures, and the high value he remained to keep on his own life was revealed, which displayed his own personal value of life and how it is precious throughout the conflict. I agree with this mentality completely, because one’s circumstances may outweigh another’s, meaning that there is
The film, Edward Scissorhands, directed by Tim Burton is about a man who has scissors instead of hands. Edward is isolated from the community and objectified for a significant part of his life and when he abstains a visit, he has taken advantage of. Agnate The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Edward Scissorhands declares that all have inherent dignity and that people deserve to endure being treated equally in a loving and caring environment.
During my visit to my EDHE 105 teacher’s office, she encouraged me to attend two meetings for two organizations on campus. One was Alpha Epsilon Delta (AED), a health profession based honors society, and the other was the American Medical Student Association (AMSA), a student lead, pre-medical organization aimed towards helping better prepare students for medical school. I was unfortunately busy during the time of the AED meeting and could not attend, but I was free during the AMSA meeting and decided to see what it was like. At first, I was skeptical about going to the meeting, because I knew that I would not know anyone else there. I was even more nervous about it when I saw how many people actually showed up, knowing that I still did not know anyone.
The question everyone seems to be baffle by is whether to continue or give up. Should one faced the obstacles in stored for them or should they just give up to be free? No one truly has the answer to this question. But one thing people who have faced this question will tell other is that just do what they love to do no matter the obstacle.
One good point the reverend made was to Listen, Learn, and Think before making actions. He insisted we know what is going on around in the community by being attentive citizens. He acknowledges there is a great place called “the rest of the world”. This was funny and made people laugh, but it brings up the reality there is a world outside of our own. Sometimes people are so caught up with their own lives they don’t recognize other people’s lives and needs. We are supposed to pay attention to those lives outside our own according to the word of Jesus and explained by the story of the good Samaritan. Another good point Reverend makes is the language of power. It is interesting how the word “minority” is misused and is now being used to represent the race of black and Latino Americans. Finally, people have to do what they can. Maybe it’s impossible for a single individual to end racial divide, but by doing simple actions such as talking to black people and speaking up against people who are contributing to the racial divide can eventually help end this
The person who was chose was Robin Williams because he shows the proverb ‘listen to what is said, not him who says it’ well. In the article that was read it quoted “Williams committed suicide on August 11, 2014.” This shows not to judge a book by it's cover because everyone thought he was a happy energetic guy, no one expected him to take his own life. He was known for his skill at improvising and his frantic comic style. Everyone found him out going. Not the depressing type. Robin Williams was an actor/comedian, everyone thought of him as a lively happy man. No one thought he’d do what he did.
Everyone in the world has a special someone that they look up to. It may be their friend, family member, or a famous person. Who ever it may be, they cherish them dearly. I , on the other hand, cherish a very unique person. He very special to me and has impacted my life greatly. He has shown me ways to love myself and others no matter the consequences. His name is Edward Scissorhands.
When you think of dark or strange films one director that comes to mind is Tim Burton. Burton has directed thirty-four films so far. Edward Scissorhands is a classic example of a Tim Burton Film. In 1990 Burton produced the film Edward Scissorhands. Looking into Burton’s films they all have common elements that many of them share.
Joining Queen Mary’s Jewish Society, known as JSoc for short, I went in expecting to be doing activities with the people who were also in the society. The day I signed up I was given a pamphlet advertising FND, or Friday Night Dinner. I signed up for my first Friday Night Dinner at the end of September and that was one of the best choices I Have made in London. Going into FND for the first time I was by myself, so I was very shy. I was expecting to be standing in the corner and to be sitting alone, but the opposite of that happened. There were over one hundred Jewish students at the first event and all of them were welcoming, which I was not used to after three weeks in London where nobody smiles or talks to strangers. The people I sat with
In 1987, Democratic heartthrob Gary Hart was well on his way to the party nomination and likely the presidency. “Dashing, handsome, young, and charismatic,” Hart promised a swift departure from Reaganomics and proved popular among women. The election looked promising; Gary Hart swept the primaries and was projected to beat Republican candidate George Bush. However, when Miami Herald reporter Tom Fiedler received a late-night tip from an anonymous source, the course of election ‘88 shifted entirely. “I have something you need to know,” confessed the voice at the end of the line. “Gary Hart is having an affair with one of my best friends.” Alongside a team of Herald reporters, Fiedler traveled to Washington and staked out what was rumored to be Hart’s townhouse. After spotting Donna Rice on the Senator’s arm, Fiedler was faced with a new question: was it ethical to tap into this new sphere of “below the belt” journalism (Adler)?
Could you Imagine living in a world with no color? In the book The Giver they are in a very different world than we are in now. However, the book and the movie are also very different. In the movie characters are older than they are in the books, for example Jonas is 15 in the movie but only 12. Next, the flashbacks have some very small differences, however they are different.
Although I have seen many movies which have an incredible space mission, but it cannot compare with Interstellar. Matthew McConaughey, who play Interstellar as an astronaut named Cooper, he lives in the world that has been facing with plant disease, which is going to be human extinction. So that he has to save humanity and his daughter alive. One day, he got messages that a binary format sent from something that he did not know exactly what it came from and who sent it? But, the messages are the NASA command center location. When he had arrived at NASA, he met doctor bran, who is physicist told him, NASA has the plan to form a team of explorers travels through a wormhole in space an attempt to find another place which humanity able to
Lastly, he uses logos to persuade his audience. Stetzer states, “53% of Protestant pastors say “our congregation sometimes seems to love America more than God” (Stetzer, 2017, para. 16). This would cause the audience to immediately get shocked knowing that 53% of pastors agree. It lets the audience aware that change needs to happen and should have never gone this far. When Stetzer states, “According to a LifeWay Research study, almost 90% of Protestant churches did something in their worship services to celebrate July 4th.” (Stetzer, 2017, para. 3). He is letting us know how many churches are involved in this issue which gives a sense of how big the problem really is. In the editorial, Acts 4:12 says how there is no salvation in no one else
