The State of Florida v. George Zimmerman was a criminal prosecution of George Zimmerman on the charge of second-degree murder stemming from the shooting of Trayvon Martin on February 26, 2012. This case has been regarded as one of the most controversial in a long time, sparking riots and new movements along with an opening of greater conversations about this country’s gun laws, legal system and racial profiling. Even though Trayvon Martin was suspended from school after drugs were found in his bookbag he wasn’t suspended for violent actions. Carol City High is where Trayvon attended before Krop in Florida where he took many honors classes including English and he always said his favorite subject was math. He often was catch studying aviation and had the potential of becoming a pilot. Throughout the school year he began to start having problems with school and drugs. He was also licensed a to carry a firearm. Zimmerman had called police several times to state he had seen individuals whom he had deemed as suspicious. All of the reported figures were black males. Zimmerman had made nearly 50 calls to police between 2004 and 2012 to report various local disturbances, such as loud parties, open garage doors, potholes, and children playing in the street. This sent out a red flag to many. With no witness that night it was Zimmerman’s word against Trayvon's family. Because of his unfortunate death, he was unable to testify and tell his side of the story. Many found the verdict to be unfair and unjust which resulted in many riots and social unrest. The Trayvon Martin Foundation was established in March 2012, with the goal of increasing awareness about the effect of violence on families while scrutinizing racial and gender crime
