The flu is an illness that normally occurs in fall or winter season. Our approach to this project is to purchase all of our supplies and equipment in a timely manner. In order to meet our deliverables, we have chosen a few vendors throughout Colorado that have a great reputation of providing excellent service to many of their customer. The most important vendor to the Flu Shot Administration project is the purchasing of medical supplies and equipment. We plan to purchase majority of our medical supplies from McKesson Corporation. We thought it would be best to contract with McKesson Corporation because they are located in Colorado. Their close proximity helps to lower transportation risks. They are well known throughout the health care industry
Usually, vaccinated children get sick after vaccination. This is because the flu virus has entered their bodies and sensitizes it against it. And, what’s more, the flu shot actually causes immunosuppression-weakened immunity.
The CDC's ad campaign promoting influenza vaccinations has a widespread appeal to many audiences due to its use of several proven persuasive techniques. Through the use of association, flattery, and universal appeal, as well as a variety of strategies, the ad campaign is highly convincing and is able to reach many audiences.
Before we know it the flu season will be here. Which mean a lot of runny noses and severe coughs, germs spreading from person to person. To help keep the spread of the flu down we need to practice:
A 65 year old female with diabetes and asthma presented with subjective chills, lethargy, arthralgias, and myalgias lasting over 2 days. She mentioned having received the inactivated influenza vaccine 5 days back. Vital signs were stable apart from sinus tachycardia (HR 143/min). Labs, including CBC and BMP, were within normal limits except for baseline normocytic anemia (Hb 10.7 g/dl). Serum calcium was 10.8 mg/dl. She was observed for a day, and was discharged home with supportive treatment. She presented a day later with persistent flu like symptoms. Labs were significant for a serum calcium being above 22 mg/dl, normal renal function, normal total protein, albumin, ACE levels, clear urine with no albuminuria, low
The article “Mom’s flu shot helps unborn babies: study” interprets the impact of flu shots during pregnancy towards an unborn baby’s fetal growth. A group of U.S and Bangladeshi researchers, who conducted the study, analyzed the weight of the baby once when the flu virus was circulating and once when it was absent. Studies showed that when it was flu season, mothers who were vaccinated gave birth to babies who weighed about 200 grams more than they usually do. Furthermore, according to Dr. Mark Steinhoff, a professor of pediatrics at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center stated that this was a major contrast in the baby’s weight. Yet, understanding this new discovery can be a useful asset towards the society as it raises awareness to
The United States during the 2004-2005 flu season identified many problems related to shortage of Flu vaccines. The diagram below shows the trends of flu vaccine availability from 1992-1993 till the 2008-2009 seasons in the United States. In the 2000-2001 flu season, the demand for vaccine exceeded supply due to challenges encountered from developing new viral strain and quality control issues by manufacturing industries which led
As health care professionals our first line of defense against any diseases is prevention and education. From taking care of our patients’ to providing valuable information related to health services which are all essential for the overall well being of the patients’ and as well as for the community. Every day we are making sure we give our patients the latest information that will benefit them in the long run for example explaining to our patients’ and their loved one importance of receiving the flu shots during flu season. Vaccination when given is intended to be given to all ages. There are many people that can benefit from the vaccines, especially the ones with the weak immune systems mostly the elderly adults. Sometimes not getting
Health care workers are required to maintain immunizations and screenings for infections as needed. Keough compares the mandates of immunization to hand washing, stating that both help reduce and prevent the spread of infections. Implementation of immunization is to protect patients, the workers, and family members. The state of Rhode Island requires their health care workers to receive the influenza vaccination or wear a mask while providing care to patients; however, some worker may be exempt from the requirement. The health care worker must provide a valid explanation to be excused; however, a fine may be issued along with penalization of the worker.
Almost religiously I go to the CVS minute clinic to get my annual flu vaccination. Although the treatment was the same as every other time, something was different this year, the number of children at the clinic. This year, I noticed how few children were waiting at the clinic for a vaccination, and I thought to myself, why was that so. Then I though back to the years preceding, and I realized that almost every year, the number of children at the CVS dropped. My initial thought was that people were just becoming used to herd immunity, but then I realized that it was likely that parents were becoming wary of the potential side effects these vaccines could have on their children. This lead me to my quest on finding whether or not vaccines hurt society more than they helped.
I do not receive a flu vaccine yearly. I do not plan on taking a flu vaccine every year in the future due to the vaccine not being more effective in preventing the flu. The CDC notes the effectiveness varies year to year due to two factors: the health and age of people being vaccinated and the match between the flu viruses circulating and the viruses used in the vaccines. The CDC reports on the effectiveness of the flu vaccine each year and has reported an average effectiveness in prior years’ ranging from 40% -60% in reducing the rate that people visit the doctor due to flu. The lowest years reported was in 2004-2005 season and 2014-2015 season with VE (Vaccine effectiveness) rate less than 20%. CDC reports the most effective vaccine
Vaccines that prime an immune system for a particular virus are not the only way to combat viral diseases. Antiviral drugs can be used to interfere with the life cycle of viruses limiting the rate of their infection and aiding the immune system in combating the disease. In the case of influenza, the two currently approved classes of drugs are Adamantanes and neuraminidase inhibitors. Within the Adamantanes there are two drugs Amantadine and Rimantadine where the drugs through their inhibiting effects prevent the virus from uncoating. However, recent reports have shown the CDC (2015, February 25) that currently circulating strains of influenza in the population has developed a resistance to Adamantanes due to genetic variation and natural selection
At the end of the 12-month-old patient’s well-check appointment, my preceptor asked if the parents wanted their child to receive the seasonal flu vaccine. Due to their older child’s previous reaction to the vaccine, the parents expressed no desire for their infant to receive it. My preceptor briefly discussed with them the benefits of receiving the vaccine. However, she also took the time to understand their perspective and displayed empathy by expressing how she understood how it could be a difficult decision for the parents to make based on their previous experience. Through legitimate and expert power from being the infant’s physician, the physician was able to have a respectful discussion with the parents with both expressing their viewpoints.
About 5.4 million American people have Alzheimer’s, 3.5 million have autism and flu claims 36000 people annually. These statistics emphasize the importance of the treatment of such disorders. Thus, I would increase funding for projects like Brain Research through Advancing Innovative Neurotechnologies (BRAIN) Initiative and Universal Flu Vaccine. The BRAIN project is decoding the role of neurons in the thoughts, memories and the perception of sensory experience. More funding can result in treatment of mental disorders, like Alzheimer’s, ADHD, autism, schizophrenia, and depression, affecting both young and old. Moreover, because of the continuous evolution of flu virus, annual administration of modified flu shots costs $87 billion. The Universal
The role of hemagglutinin (HA) , which is one of the abundant & immunodominant glycoprotein on the surface of the influenza virus ,is very important as an immunogen in anti-influenza vaccines (Gamblin & Skehel.,2010). HA is a major glycoprotein in the viral lipid envelope membrane with a distal globular head that mediates host-cell receptor binding followed by a membrane-proximal stalk domain which directs fusion of viral envelope with the host cell(Kaminski &Lee ,2011). The current split-virus vaccines predominantly induce antibodies to the surface glycoprotein like HA ,NA . Due to antigenic drift ,the surface glycoproteins undergo mutations, therefore the three influenza strains are included in seasonal IIV (influenza A(H1N1) and A(H3N2) and influenza B) which are evaluated for their ability to generate neutralizing antibodies against the circulating influenza strains (Waffarn E. & Baumgarth N.,2011). . After vaccination with inactivated Influenza vaccine , it results in both local and systemic responses generation. .Within 2 weeks of vaccination, 90% of vaccines found to have protective antibody titres (Cox RJ.1994) .In humans, hemagglutinin specific effector T-cells are found to be major proliferating subsets of T-cells which are seen after stimulation by HA molecule (Novak et al 1999).
The ability to eliminating waste is an important part of any business structure. In many cases, businesses view that their processes that are being followed are both efficient and getting the job done, however when examined, the businesses may be able to see that the processes are failing them in one or more places causing waste to occur. The types of waste that are often found in a doctor’s office include: correction, inventory, wait time, motion, space, processing and complexity. In this paper, the process of getting a flu shot at a local doctor’s office from a few different points of view and will be examine for lean processing and eliminating waste. The process that is formally defined and recorded in a business
