I think that kids shouldn't play football because it is too dangerous. People get concussions every day when they play football. After repeatedly bashing their skulls football players get concussions, caused by the spongy tissue in the brain hitting the hard skull. It is very painful to get a concussion, and leaves permanent damage to the brain. As well as being excruciatingly painful, and possibly never being the same, with many issues. "In milder cases, athletes can be left with lifelong pain, memory lapses, aggression, depression, personality changes, and many other issues."(Shotz[11]). CTE is a brain disease found in individuals with annals of head trauma. It has specifically been found in athletes with numerous concussions. So far it can only be diagnosed in the deceased, but Dr. Julian Bales and his staff in UCLA have discovered symptoms in living players such as Hall of Famer Anthony “Tony” Dorsett, Hall of Famer Joe DeLamielleure, and NFL All-Pro Leonard Marshall. CTE can cause memory loss, dementia, depression, suicidal thoughts, cognitive and emotional difficulties (Waldron par 1, 2, 3). Is it a compelling issue? There are thousands of kids playing football either in youth, middle school, high school, or college level. The diagnosis is currently in progress, researchers are optimistic this could lead to a legitimate treatment, how to manage, and hopefully a cure. Banning football is like the Prohibition. Just like with the Prohibition, there is much danger and controversy surrounding football. People that think football should be banned make a good case for the ban because of long-term illnesses such as CTE or ALS which could physically disable a person for life. On the other hand, football teaches life skills such as teamwork or trust. 0

The NFL attempted to hide the truth and resolved to a biased decision that was unethical. The most important unethical issue was the lack of clarity for the players involved. The players were uninformed about the risk factors of their career. The NFL did not compensate for the injuries acquired during their career. Lastly, the issue broadens beyond professional football to different sports, even those involving many American youths, who are affected by CTE. The three main concerns led to the ethical question which examines whether or not it is ethical to allow players to continue participating in sports activity that would result in long-term damages to the brain. Facts from journals examine cognitive impairment related to concussions, methods that NFL took to handle the cases, and application of the study results to sports beyond the NFL.

Lately there have been many retired football players have been diagnosed with Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy(CTE) which is a disease that destroys the neurons of the brain and is traced back to concussions. The neurons send signals through microtubules in the axon which is held together by the protein tau. When trauma occurs to the brain the tau protein may be separated from the microtubules making them unable to let signals pass through. According to the Sports Legacy Institute CTE may create permanent memory loss, confusion, paranoia, aggression, depression, and eventually dementia. On August of 2013 4,500 players started a lawsuit against the NFL, within weeks the number of former plays increased to 12,000 and they received a 765 million dollar settlement for compensation and pay for medical exams for people those are eligible.

Many people may think that the players knew what they signed up for when they started playing football, but did they really? Did NFL players really know what risks they were put at by playing football? What we now know today as football was invented in 1869, the NFL was established in 1920 and Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) was discovered in 2002. Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy, sounds like a bunch of scientific words for a head condition but CTE is much more than a minor head injury. CTE cause a variation of horrific symptoms like, irritability, aggression, speech difficulties and motor impairment, just to name a few. Bennet Omalu, the man who discovered CTE and brought up a living nightmare to NFL found that there was a strong link between football and the degenerative disease. According to Journal of the American Medical Association, “%99 of the 111 ex-NFLers brains’ were diagnosed with CTE.”. So, you tell me in the, 70’s, 80’s 90’s and even 2000’s did NFL players really know what they were at risk of.

For decades, American Football has captivated this nation as one of the prime sources of entertainment. With the culmination point, the Super Bowl, attracting more viewership than any other televised event in the country, the sport has seen a tremendous growth since its origination in 1920. In an era of economic struggle, job shortage, and high-cost of living, those with above average physical abilities can find the lure of professional football to be extremely attractive. With the wealth and fame attached to a professional career, many of our youths share the common dream of achieving football star status. In order to attempt this lofty goal, many kids enroll in this contact sport at an early age, often times with the support of their parents.

Some people say that football is too brutal and should be banned. Parents all over the United States don’t allow their children to play because of the risk of head injuries. In a recent study released by the American Academy of Neurology it has been found that “protection against concussion and complications of brain injury is especially important for young players, including elementary and middle school, high school and college athletes, whose still-developing brains are more susceptible to the lasting effects of trauma”(Science Daily, 2014). The study also found that standard football helmets worn by the majority of players on the field today, only reduce the risk of traumatic brain injury by 20 percent compared to not wearing a helmet at all (Science Daily, 2014).

The main reason football should be banned is because of the high risk of receiving a concussion. A concussion is known as a brain injury caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head that disrupts the brain’s normal function. When receiving a serious strike to the head, the brain is violently shaken around, continuously bumping the skull. Football is a direct contact sport. The players are all at risk of getting tackled, whether it is during practices or games. Although most coaches and teams have certain regulations against tackling, players continue to go against these rules.
