In “The Cask of Amontillado”, the setting of the stories takes place in Italy, above the ground in a lively carnival and then Poe takes us underground to the catacombs of the Montresor’s. The setting of the story correlates with the character Fortunato the not so fortunate character of this passage and it shows us the reader how things in life have can have an opposite turn right before our eyes when one lets themselves be lured into obsessions and desires and how one isn’t fully aware of what’s going on during most of these moments, in this case Fortunato. The setting of this passage is appropriate for the text and for this specific character, Fortunato, because within these series of events we see things go from lively to dark and from fortunate to unfortunate, just like our character Fortunato. The good things stay with the good things. Nobody’s a fan of mixing things that don’t belong together, for an example the clean stays with the clean and the dirty with the dirty. My mentioning of this is only because we are introduced to the characteristics of Fortunato in a paragraph that only contributes to the next, the setting of the festive carnival. The passages introduces Fortunato as, “...he was man to be respected and even feared.” and on the following paragraph we are introduced to the carnival where both characters are present , Fortunato and Montresor, with Montresor already under the influence of the consumption of alcohol , “...one evening during the supreme madness
