Four Day Workweek Summary

As Samuel Gompers notes, “I maintain that this is a true proposition- that men under the short-hour system not only have opportunity to improve themselves, but to make a greater degree of prosperity for their employers”(2). Men who are overworked have “lives to work instead of working to live” (2) which is accurate. They do the same thing every day having a routine and no time devoted into bettering themselves and having thoughts on ideas or anything. The author is Samuel Gompers and the intended audience is working men, more specifically those who hire the working men. To make them realize what they are doing by assigning so many hours to men. This is a primary document as it may have been composed during the midst of a time when men were constantly overworked.

Financial problems have arose in many schools. Many schools believe that “One day less means one day less of heating the school, fueling buses, feeding students and paying certain staff members” (Anderson). Little things like that can save schools a lot more money. More money means more equipment for learning and new schools objects. “An informational poll on edutopia.com indicates that 67% of over 2700 polled favor this as a solution to school districts financial hardship” (Hadfield). A lot of people want the four day week to be a “thing” so that financial problems can no longer be a problem. Teachers and schools would say “Their budgets has been stretched tighter than a drum and has finally reached a breaking point that cannot be ignored” (Occupy Theory). A sign that teacher and student are getting a bit tired of the stress being put on them because of financial problem. There are more benefits along with the resolution of financial problems and it is academics.

Work-life balance has been a popular topic for employees across all age and occupations for years, representing a rising concern of contemporary human resource management and labor policies. This topic has attracted the attention from the millennium generation, who is stepping into the market and beginning to grow a career. Therefore considering the increasing demand, well-designed workforce planning with diverse scheduling options offered to employees appears to be extra credits for most companies. This research paper aims to communicate the positive effects of four-day workweek, and providing support for why employers should adopt this schedule for employees and themselves through 1) introducing background and history of four-day workweek as a work schedule option and 2) demonstrating benefits of four-day workweek from both employer and employees’ perspectives.

Ford Company faced the labor surplus because of its high cost structure and decreased in the demand of automobile. There was no work for all employees in the company but the ford paid salary and other benefit to all employee even there are not contributing and involving in the production. I think the four day week will help out a lot. Most of all they will be fewer days you have to come to school. Most of all the students favor this idea of the four day week and a three day weekend. The kids get less burned out because of the four days instead of the five days and only have two days to sit back and chill and rest. Times have changed since 1914 and we are still having issuses when it comes to the work environment. Both articles have made strong arguments; on what would be the best solution and how it would benfit not only the workers but the employers as well. However I agree that six hour days would not work. Either the workers lose two hour wages everyday or the employers hire more wokers for the jobs that are not being done due to only having six hours. Well the traditional five days a week is making students feel burnout in a way that student don’t want to even go, especially throughout the school year since it can be so stressful, and it’s not only students but the teachers too! Over a course of time we can start to feel exhaustion because you are constantly putting all your energy into school and you are constantly using your brain, but the four-day school week system will allow students and teachers to get more rest and devote more time and energy into the school days efficiently, creating happier students and teachers.
