Almagro was jealous of Pizarro’s fame and tried to take over Cuzco from Pizarro. Cuzco was the capital of the Incas. Pizarro’s brothers captured and executed Almagro and some of Almagro’s followers were still angry. They went ahead and assassinated Pizarro in the city that he founded, Lima. In chapter two of Stern’s text, he discusses the initial phases of the Spanish conquest of the Andean people. According to the text, in 1532, 168 conquistadores defeated and captured Atahualpa, the Emperor of the Incas (Stern p 27). It is possible that the Spanish were able to do this because of their advance weaponry and overall combat skills. This is in addition to the fact that according to class discussions Atahualpa wanted an audience with the Spanish as a ploy to capture the Spanish. The Spanish were then able to capture Atahualpa, as they were already in his vicinity. Stern expands upon the capture of the Incan Emperor saying that the Andean people were in fact impressed with the Spanish as a result of this as well as “their power and good fortune”

Born in Santervás de Campos, Spain, in 1460, Juan Ponce de León had sailed on expeditions with Christopher Columbus, and then sailed to the New World on expeditions of his own later on. Although most commonly known for his exploration for the Fountain of Youth, Ponce de León proved to be a great explorer for having resolved the rebellion that had erupted in Hispaniola, but also discovering Puerto Rico and Florida to add to his legacy and story.

Coronado did many interesting and great things. In 1538, he became the governor of a Spanish province in Mexico called Nueva Galicia. During Coronado’s expedition through New Mexico and Arizona, he and his crew were the first Europeans to see the Grand Canyon. Francisco and his crew also raided a Zuni village, thinking that they found the Seven Golden Cities of Cibola, but they didn’t. The extraordinary things that Francisco Coronado did made him famous.
He accomplished this by ambushing and capturing the Inca ruler Atahualpa. Pizarro invited Atahualpa to a "peaceful gathering", but when Atahualpa arrived, he was captured, imprisoned and ransomed. Atahualpa's ransom was paid by the Inca empire with what would be equivalent to 50 million dollars worth of gold today, or, better stated by Pizarro, as "enough gold to fill a room". Unfortunately, this ransom was paid to no avail; in 1533 the Spaniards strangled and beheaded Atahualpa. The Spaniards extended their control over Inca territory in the following years. In 1572 they overwhelmed the last of the Inca forces and captured the last emperor, Túpac Amaru. In beheading him, they ended the Inca dynasty.
