Franklin and Theodore Roosevelt
Throughout the ages there have been many great leaders. These leaders are powerful in many ways, with a strong control over the people, and a place in history. But who would have guessed that two cousins would be some of the greatest government figures ever? Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Theodore Roosevelt, both American presidents, both American Heroes. Without these dignitaries, the American advancement into the present day would be incomplete and/or impossible. They gave people hope through hard times and the spirit to protect their country and one another.

In 1904 Roosevelt was re-elected for a second term in office. In 1906, he passed the Pure Food and Drug act. This group of laws protected American consumers from harmful food, drugs, and cosmetics. Roosevelt took advantage of his presidential powers to bust into foreign affairs in Latin America and resolved the Russo- Japanese war. This valiant act earned him a Nobel Peace Prize.
Roosevelt felt strongly about trade throughout the world. In 1904 the Isthmus of Panama was first broken by American shovel. After months of negotiation, the Latin American government allowed the creation of the Panama Canal. The U.S. military and other volunteers did most of the work. But because of Yellow Fever and Malaria , few workers returned. In 1914 the Canal Zone was finished and for the first time the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans were flowing together.
As Roosevelt’s second term was coming to an end, he picked William Howard Taft as his successor. Taft preached his ideas to the public, criticizing Roosevelt in his speeches.
Roosevelt, hearing about his partner’s insulting speeches, broke from the Republican’s and formed a third party which he called the Progressive Party. The two duked it out in “The most remarkable political joust that the United States has ever seen…” Meanwhile, very quietly, Woodrow Wilson, under the Democratic Party was campaigning.

In fact, he was the leader of the progressive movement. He continuously wanted there to be a happy balance between capital and labor so he founded his policy called the Square Deal. He was a liberal and became an advocate for prosecuting monopolies that violated antitrust law, otherwise known as “trust busting”. He kept these monopolies from controlling entire industries across the country. He worked hard to guide the United States into world politics. Roosevelt also aimed for Promotion of Anti-Trust suits. He was also a conversationalist. Some of his policies for conservation were creating the National Conservation Commission to record the nation’s resources and manage their use more efficiently, Delegate two hundred million acres as national forests, mineral reserves, and waterpower plants, as well as an addition of five national parks and eighteen national monuments to the list of protected lands. Roosevelt worked very hard to try and keep the economic issues of his time intact.

Theodore Roosevelt was one of our greatest presidents. He created the FDA and improved the position of the presidency greatly. Before Theodore came to be president, the position of presidency was slow and wasn’t very interesting so he made the executive branch more powerful by starting new reforms and a strong foreign policy. The life of a president is hard. It is full of stress, responsibilities, and a strong dedication the welfare of your country. Third parties in American politics have had limited influence on a national level due to the winner-take-all nature of elections. While they have had some success in local and Congressional elections, it has been limited, and they have certainly stopped short of reaching the presidency. One significant exception to the marginalization of third parties was the Progressive Party of 1912. Theodore Roosevelt was born on October 27th, 1858 in New York City. He was the second child of four. He was born with asthma, which could be deadly at that time. His father, a successful business man and philanthropist, was disappointed in his homeschooled son. He thought that his son had a great mind but not the right body to go with it. He desired a “rugged” son. This encouraged Theodore to “make his body” by taking several weightlifting and gymnastics classes. He became an advocate for the “strenuous life” which included activities such as horseback riding, boxing, and hiking. Roosevelt sought after being more involved in world affairs, which work well with him by settling disputes in a non-war fashion and settling with japan, while deploying the great white fleet on a “goodwill mission’ as the book states.
