Freedom - the power or right to act, speak, or think as one wants without hindrance or restraint. Such a small definition for a word with so much meaning. This miniscule word has inspired people and even started wars.This topic is rarely regarded; even though we would certainly know if someone took our freedom from us.

Freedom, to many people does not necessarily mean they are free. There are many degrees and definitions of freedom throughout the history of America many different races, genders, and ethnicities experienced. The varieties of freedom come from multiple groups of people such as slaves, indentured servants, Native Americans, property owners, and Puritans. All of these groups had their own definition of freedom they experienced, ranging from little to no freedom, freedom from the land they possessed, and the freedom to worship any God they so choose. However, some of these freedoms conflicted with the freedoms of others.

An American essayist, H.L. Mencken stated, “The average man does not want to be free. He simply wants be safe”. I disagree with this statement because an “average man” wants to live. In order to live you must have two necessities; freedom and safety. I believe neither is more important than one another because being free gives you the opportunity to a safe nation, and a safe nation allows you to be free. You cannot live a life without exploring and growing because that would not be considered living. On the other hand, you cannot expect to be free without safety around you.

One important tool for establishing freedom is a strong government to establish those freedoms. Without a strong central government we wouldn't be able to be provided with freedoms such as those in the bill of rights. That power of the government comes from the people. A government by the people means we have the rights to overthrow a government when it becomes to destructive and make a new government. When the governments were established they did not give all the power to just one group of the government, they separated the power by three branches so it wouldn't be abused by one. In the novel The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain, a theme of freedom is expressed. Freedom takes on a different view for each character in the novel. In Huck's journey, and in Jim, the runaway slave, they acquire freedom. Jim's hunt for freedom is an escape from slavery, while Huck's is a method to get away from the civilized world. Their search for freedom is for one reason, their happiness. This is expressed throughout the novel in Jim's wish of escaping slavery and Huck's desire for being uncivilized.

Slavery is the capturing of people and keeping them for labor, chores, favors, etc., against their will. These people who became slaves are obviously not free, and this greatly contributed to the fact that America was not free during this time.
