The increase in technological advancements has changed the way people communicate. The introduction of the internet has changed the world to a global parish where individuals can communicate instantly regardless of their geographical location. The internet and technology seem to affect every aspect of life of people including doing business, learning, and marketing among others. It is also notable that the internet has provided platform on which people can interact freely and express their opinions on different issues within the society. The internet has been considered as a tool that people use in promoting their freedom of expression. The internet has been considered as one of the most effective tools in the modern society that promote democracy. Before the introduction of the internet, people were usually afraid of complaining or even pointing out some faults within the government, which affected their freedom of expression. Through the internet, it is now possible for an individual to express their opinions about the government and its operations without any fear (McChesney, 2013).
The internet has created anonymity, which enables the internet users to fail to be recognized. There are certain sensitive issues within the society where people are afraid of speaking of publicly. For example, it is risky to provide certain facts about the president since there are certain laws that prohibit provision of certain information that does not have evidence. In such a case, it would be risky for an individual to provide such information especially when they do not have sufficient evidence. The internet has provided anonymity where users do not have to reveal their personal information. The anonymity feature enables users to address some of the sensitive issues within the society without fearing any form of intimidation from the government or the public. However, the feature of anonymity has been disregarded by some of the members of the public who state that some internet users use it in intimidating others and spreading fake news. Looking at the feature from a bright
It is about time we have some filters or establish and enforce legal ramifications on the use of the internet when hate speech is identified in all 50 states. These legal ramifications should be extended to people in authority who use information from the internet to get to their subordinates. The internet has radically changed the way we get and disseminate information. The internet is a place to express free speech and just be yourself, but this has many times come back to hunt users in a negative way. This paper will be looking at how schools, workplaces, and even other users misuse the idea of free speech on the internet and why we need to filter hate speech and introduce legal ramifications for these actions.
One can appreciate the modern technology and how it simplified life, but fail to use it to the full extent. Throughout these past decades, technology has brought both advantages and disadvantages to the humankind. One of the disadvantages deals with government involvement, giving them the access to information and the power to make sure they have everything under control which leaves its users with limitation and undemocratic. The good news is this situation only leads to certain measure leaving the users with freedom. Freedom giving people a chance to express themselves, even though they fail to see the immunity they own. Democracy tends to be part of the technological system as well, most users use it to ensure democratization is all around the world by including its part of communication. Democratization theory is that Cyberspace provides a various amount of internet sources for people to access, whether it is to communicate or share moments with one another. “Democracy in Cyberspace: What Technology Can and Cannot Do for Us,” is a text written by Ian Bremmer, sharing evidence-based information sources that point out the real deal of internet and it’s reflection towards its users. One’s experience of freedom is determined by the amount that is given to them, including their dependence on one another, as well as, providing the chance to define technologist’s neutrality. Advanced developments have occurred a lot throughout these years for the sake of technology.
The Georgia Institute of Technology is a one of the top public research universities in the world. The technology and society program is one of the top-rated programs at Georgia Tech. The program aims to lead in the research and breakthroughs that drive social and scientific progress. This paper investigated and discussed the effect of the Internet on democracy over the world in the period of 1992 to 2002 by using several methods including survey, research and discovering the relationships between the Internet and policies. Numerous previous reports and tests were cited in the paragraph as well as charts. Although the data were gathered only for the period of 1992 to 2002 which means the findings may be outdated, the writers’ predictions in
We live in a society where people are mostly private or conservative, and this makes it risky to make certain statements, or have opinions expressed openly online with one’s real name. A person’s name goes on all his /her personal records, and so having an imprint of it all over cyberspace makes a person vulnerable. Anonymity is vital for debates regarding sexual abuse, abortions, medical or minority issues, harassments, drug use, gun laws, sex lives, and other topics. The benefits of anonymity outweigh its disadvantages; here are a few reasons why. Anonymity helps when people want to report illegal activities without fear of retribution. People in a country with a repressive political regime may use anonymity to avoid persecution for their political opinions. Anonymity is used to protect the privacy of people, and so such should be respected and
Today’s impact of web-based communication on public attitudes and political policy making has influenced the way we see politics and the structure of our government, we the people get a say in everything, web-based communication is what most politicians look at, believe
Theorists contend that representative government is headed for direct democracy by way of the Internet. Essentially what will happen is that representatives will no longer be needed because citizens will be able to use the Internet to make decisions. Grossman contends that “the more power [citizens] have to control their government and to involve themselves in making its decisions, the better” (41). Over the years citizens have been obtaining information through the media, newspapers, and other forms of mass media. The issues that arise with obtaining information through these sources are that the government can easily censor them. With the Internet comes “vastly expanded capacities for data collection, for computation, and for automation” (Kamark & Nye 22).
Firstly, social network transmit democracy world-wide. The diffusion of the internet can effectively facilitate democracy. There is no surprise that the free information has spread by the internet, which encouraged freedom and provided the right to everybody to announce their voice. It goes without saying that internet provides a social platform that people are sharing and posting different information on their personal profiles, by delivering the messages in online, therefore, the information, images and videos can be uploaded on social network without consequences. According to Lazar (2015), the author demonstrated that the internetwork is a market that people can conveniently share and spread their point of view, including the political
Brendan O'Neill’s article, “ The internet’s war on free speech” denotes the freedom for Facebook and Twitter. Brendan O'Neill says, “...either because the curator 'didn't recognize the news topic' or 'they had a bias'. ...stories they see are chosen by user 'likes', rather than by editors who decide what we web plebes should and shouldn't know. ...for a couple of years now they've been casting out moral undesirables, blocking the offensive and engaging in political censorship.” Therefore, they’re not sure if they should censor bad things, but sometimes these offensive or terrible things can get to something serious. People could end up getting arrested, in the article it includes, “ ...a 19-year-old was arrested after tweeting a joke about
The statement: “The Impact of Web-based communication on public attitudes and political policy making”, has been a fiery hot topic for the past couple of years. As the internet grows and becomes more engrossed with people online, and their opinions, it becomes a domino effect of sorts on public attitudes, and the making of political policies. The internet as established online forums, where people who share the same opinions are able to go and “meet up” with one another to discuss the issues of the day. However, these online forums have a greater impact on society than people realize.
The issue of online anonymity is becoming increasingly important and ubiquitous in the virtual world as the internet has become a fast-rising necessity in our everyday lives. Recently, online forums and domains that allow users to attain anonymity easily have become increasingly popular. In this paper, we will be exploring why people choose to be anonymous on the internet, the positive and negative consequences of online anonymity and the demographic differences of people who choose to stay anonymous online.
It may seem blasé, or more probably naive, in this post dot-com-bust world to still hold out that “information is power” and, moreover, that the Internet is fundamentally different than any previous information technology. Perhaps I am guilty of such sentimentalities, but allow me at least for the sake of argument to hold on to a small hope that the Internet really is something new. It would then be true that information and indeed the Internet—the phenomenon as opposed to the Internet as an enabling tool towards other rights—should be a human right in and of itself.
Internet anonymity is now used to a large extent, with main uses being to provide an escape from repercussions that may occur should these anonymous interactions be carried out in real life. It is evident from the effects that Internet anonymity brings about that in terms of using anonymity negatively, it is those on the receiving end who receive the brunt of the negative impacts that may arise.
In this essay I would like to discuss freedom of speech, moreover, how does the internet facilitate it. The right to
Freedom of speech or free speech is the right to articulate ideas and opinions without fear of censorship or retaliation. Others consider it the freedom of expression, and it has become more apparent that people are encouraged to voice opinions without societal sanctions. “The internet has become the main reason for this because it offers several channels and platforms to express ideas and opinions” (Gabriel, “Killing Free Speech”). Social media are the best example of the growth of the internet, where even companies heed points generated by the public through the social networking websites. However, this is a growing problem because free speech has become the tool for people enforce personal biases on others, or the liberating incentive for communities to abide or believe in some ideas and ignore others. as a result, freedom of speech is a problem because the lack of censorship has detrimental effects on the peace in the respective communities.
Years since the creation of computers, the Internet has been established that allows people to have access inside a huge cyberspace. The Internet served two purposes: to create a network that allows people to share and transfer files with one another and to create a web of information that helps people find what they are looking for. With the everlasting growth and improvements that shape the way the Internet is today, it has become an important aspect in many people’s personal lives that makes communication with others much more convenient. The most important feature of online communication as opposed to face-to-face communication is that anybody is capable of concealing their identity completely, making them anonymous online and giving a deeper meaning to the word stranger. Kimberly Christopherson, a research assistant for Crimes against Children Research Center in the University of New Hampshire, acknowledges both the positive and negative qualities of anonymity, since it allows people to feel more secure online by hiding their identity, but also leads to more group polarization, which can affect human relationships (Christopherson 3042).
