On a warm sunny day in Sochi, Russia a young American man did the unthinkable. After 18 years of hardwork and dedication pulling off a trick he learned but only two days prior, he won the first ever gold medal in mens slopestyle skiing in the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics (American Men). Freestyle skiing is a breathtaking, gravity defying sport that found its way into the olympics and has grown with major success with the best getting better and new faces rising to the top, nevertheless it is a jaw dropping, ever inspiring sport.
Freestyle skiing was popular with skiers but took a long time for it to be accepted into the olympics. Freestyle skiing began early in the twentieth century and was introduced into the United States in the early

Aerial skiing is a discipline where skiers must be precise or they risk serious injury, or quite possibly death. The skier starts at any point on the mountain, skies down, and goes off a huge jump that can measure up to 13 feet. Then while midair they do mind boggling twist and flips and try to land the jump. The skiers are judged by a panel of five judges on fifty percent form, twenty percent air, and thirty percent landing. After the first round the top twelve scoring men and top twelve scoring women move on to the finals where each competitor jumps twice and the highest scoring man and woman wins gold (Morrison et. …show more content…
Halfpipe skiing is simply a long run that has connecting jumps on either side that combine to form a ‘half pipe’ skiers go off the sides of the halfpipe to get air and do tricks and land back in the halfpipe and ski over to the other side and get air and perform more tricks, they do this for the entirety of the halfpipe trying to score the most points from the judges (Doyle). Slopestyle is what the majority of people think of when they think of freestyle skiing. The slopestyle discipline is a course set up with rails, boxes, jibs, and jumps where skiers do a variety of tricks to impress the judges and get the highest
Skiing has been found to be easier for many people. One of the main reasons is it is very similar to other sports like; ice skating, rollerblading and running. The ability to balance on a
Snowboarding before the time of Shaun White was like the calm before the storm. At the age of 13 Shaun was professionally sponsored and on his way to changing snowboarding forever. With so much skill and desire, Shaun brought the competition in and really took it to the next level. Not long after his arrival, Shaun was already the face of snowboarding.to snowboarding None of these accomplishments came easy for Shaun or his parents. Before the financial aid of the corporate sponsors took place, “Shaun White’s snowboarding activities cost his parents $20,000 annually” (Gale, 2006). The physical and financial dedication paid off in 1999 when Shaun was first signed to Burton Snowboards. Not long after that, the winning began. Starting with a pair of Silver medals in Halfpipe and Slopestyle during the 2002 X-Games. Gold medals in Slopestyle for 2003, 04, 05, & 06. Gold medal in halfpipe 2003 as well as 2006. Finally, Winter Olympic halfpipe gold medals in 2006 and 2010, with a total medal count of 15 medals (including bronze) between 2001 to 2010 (Gale, 2010). Arguably the winningest
Slopestyle is a winter sport in which the competitors go down a hill that has a wide array of obstacles such as rails and jumps. Both skis and snowboards have seperate events. It is very
The cost of skiing, ski equipment, left tickets, traveling to the mountains, and staying at a resort it far too expensive for the majority of black Americans to attain. Skiing is an economic investment that many African Americans cannot invest in. Also, black people do not reside in the rural mountainous areas where skinning occurs, so they have no familiarity with a sport like skiing. A Canadian survey studied in 1995 revealed that skiing is passed on for generations and that longtime skiers were exposed to skiing as a child. The thing is that when there’s not a family history of participation in skiing the likelihood for most African Americans picking up skiing is very slim. Jennifer Lee explains how the everyday racism that is experienced by African Americans while they are alone or in small groups is the reason why they avoid to visit or be part of a white constructed environment. Having only 2% of blacks in the sport, is a major reason why they avoid the sport. If they don't feel comfortable rather discriminated, skiing is not a sport they will consider joining. Let us take it back to the 1950’s, African Americans and Jews were not allowed in restricted southern ski lodges and hotels, and still today blacks are not very welcomed in ski resorts. They are widely excluded from privileged spaces. Harrison states that if there were no socioeconomic barriers in sports, we
Alpine skiing is one type of sport in the Olympic. Specifically, racers who ski down slopes the fastest win. However, the competitors must go through events before ending at the finish line. Examples of the events consist of the salmon, a course that requires short tight turns, the giant slalom, widely spaced turns, and the SUPER-giant slalom, which has no turns and runs downhill. All slamons occur above sea level. Turning tight corners is challenging in the alpine skiing. The salmons get easier. Bobsleighing is another sport in the Olympics that relates to skiing. Additionally, athletes race down an icy track on a sled. The tracks ranges from 1,260 feet or above sloping down to 1,000 feet or below. Bobsledding requires control over the sleigh. In addition, ice makes bobsledding slippery. Snowboarding on slopes also consist in the Olympics. Furthermore, snowboarders ride down a course begins at an altitude of 760 meters and ends at 650 meter. The style of snowboarding depends a lot. Snowboarding takes a lot of hand-eye coordination. Therefore, many types of sports need high elevation and snow or
Ester competed in skiing and is going to compete in snowboarding next week for Pyeongchang Olympics. Although skiing is not her main sport, both snowboarding and skiing take a lot of discipline and strength. Skiing and snowboarding are totally different. When you snowboard you have to balance your two feet that are strapped to a board. You have to keep your balance and keep right positioning while moving up to 40 miles per hour! In skiing, you rest your feet on two separate skis and have poles in your hands. You have to learn balance, keeping a perfect squatting position, and learn how to turn smoothly so you don’t wipe out. These sports seem similar to some concepts but still very different.
This year in the Winter Olympics there is a sport called snowboarding, in snowboarding, there is a lot of safety rules and gear, it also involves a lot of practice. The track that they snowboard on most of the time is a halfpipe shape made of slick snow. It’s steep when you go up, but fast to go down so you can gain momentum to go up the other side and do a trick. In the event, you need to beat the other team by doing more tricks and the tricks have their level of points as well, you need more points than the other team to win. You can do multiple tricks in the air and on the snow, most are done in the air. You get judged off of your performance and tricks if both teams do a cab (A switch frontside spin) but you land or perform it better you get more points. 60% of their score are on their tricks while the other 40% is an overall impression. They have a certain amount of time to complete their tricks.
First and foremost skiing helps you conquer fear. Everyone and I mean everyone is scared their first day on the mountain. You have to get all bundled up in these special clothes to keep you warm and big ski boots that hurt your feet and are hard to walk in. Don't forget your gloves otherwise, your fingers will fall off. Once you get past the fear of the cold you rent your skis and you have to get past the fear of the ski lift ride to the top of the mountain. You don't expect the ride to the top of the mountain to be scary so you get on the lift. Then about five minutes into the ride to the top of the mountain you start to get tons of butterflies in your stomach as you look back over your shoulder and see the cars in the parking lot get smaller and smaller and the buildings start to disappear as you reach the summit. When you step out of the gondola/chairlift you are at about 11,000ft elevation depending which mountain you are on, and sometimes you are above the clouds. It's a euphoric view, but unfortunately, this is where the real fear starts to kick in. As you put your skis on and get ready to go down the mountain you have to conquer the fear of each turn and the fear of going down different trails with each having a different difficulty level. It's amazing, once you get the basic motions down and conquer the fears that come with them you’ll be flying down the mountain carving every trail in sight (green, blue and black). Being able to overcome fears of skiing can help you in your real life. I just recently went on a trip to Wolf Creek Colorado and climbed to the top of the largest peak
The sport that I chose to do is 4-man bobsleigh. The goal of bobsleigh is to get the fastest time out of 4 runs over two days. The courses are 1,200 to 1,500 meters long and the minimum curve radius of 20 meters. The slope is an average of 12 to 15% steep. The winner is decided by adding up the 4 times from the four heats, and then the fastest time overall is the winner. The times are recorded on a stopwatch in hundredths of a second.
What’s better during the hot summer months than some good old water games? This one is patterned after the biathlon. Although a Winter Olympic sport, we have changed this up to be a summer thrill. In this version the competitors will be running a short distance and
There are many sports in the Olympics and Bobsledding is one of them. The goal of the event is to be the fastest on the bobsled track. In order to win the race your team has to have the fastest time at the end of the race. They use timers for the race to get the score. Winner will be given their medals at the end of winners are picked. The current world record is 125 mph set by Andre Lange, Rene Hoppe, Kevin Kuske, and Martin Putze. They record was broken in the 1990’s. Men sled’s and woman sleds all weigh a different amount. 2 man sleds weigh less than 4 man sleds. Germany is holding the most medals in this sport right now.
Ski racing is a sport where you race quickly down a ski slope around gates. There are short-term effects whilst performing the sport and long term from training.
This is when people use specially made skis to ride and spin off and on rails along with spinning and inverting ones self while flying through the air off a jump. Freestyle skiing tends to get a bad reputation because it is new. Just like rap music or quantum mechanics it is a practice misunderstood by the older generation and is therefore shunned. I am here to explain that we are not a group of troublemakers who are making a fool of a sport thats been around since 1850. We are progressing it.
In the St. Louis Olympics of 1904, breastroke was included and considered as a sport. The distances of the freestyle and backstroke also changed as they used yards instead of meters. Jump a few years, and women could be found swimming in the 1912 Olympics. This was an improvement to the sport of swimming because it allowed females to have a part in the Olympics. During the progression stage of swimming, the addition of closed swimming was introduced. Swimming would no longer be open swimming (in open bodies of water). The 1924 Olympics in Paris introduced lanes that were divided with corks and lines at the bottom of the pool. Another improvement that was made during this progression era was the introduction of the first butterfly in 1934. The first butterfly was used to bring the arms from the back to the front over the water, not through. Although butterfly was used to improve breastroke times, the stroke was accepted as a completely new stroke that required the use of undulating kicks in 1952, 18 years after the first variation of
An example being, as skis were manufactured lighter yet still retaining their durability, people began to push their limitations based on the limitations of the equipment. Many people give credit to people considered “pioneers” of action sports. Rodney Mullen, Tony Hawk, Matt Hoffman, Travis Pastrana are just a few heavyweight title holders for defining what extreme sports are as well as helping to stimulate their popularity in the public eye. Television coverage of competitions has brought extreme sports and their participants more attention as well. The "X Games" and the Olympics are only two of many examples.
