Functions of Law

The functions and role of law in business and society are vast and must be narrowed down for better understanding. Law is important to businesses because it not only protects the business but it gives the business guidelines to follow to ensure fair dealing and also reliability of business transactions. It important that a business understand that there are rules that must be followed when conducting day-to-day transactions and they will be held accountable for their actions. Law regulates society by also holding individuals accountable for their actions. The law essentially defines the rules and also defines what happens if the rules are broken by an individual or business.

One of the most important purposes of laws in the world is just to prevent that nothing bad happens to us, for example how a society could survive without traffic driving laws? It is impossible, we need to have rules that shows us the way we have to drive, the signs we need to respect, the light we need to observe, when to stop and when we should pass, and the consequences of breaking the laws.

The word law is defined as a system of principles and regulations of ethics and rules in order to keep people and also things in line, a set of rules of conduct. There are many functions of law in business and in society. Without the functions of laws many companies, etc. could and would not survive. Law is very valuable within businesses. Businesses have to have law because it is used as a protective shield for the companies. Without laws, companies could have lawsuits placed on them. In the book “Anthem” by Ayn Rand, there are a lot of rules and controls that they have in their society. In order to keep a clean and organized society they need to have those rules and controls. Why do these rules exist? What is their purpose? And will Equality have these rules in his society?

There are many laws out there that cover near enough everything, so therefore with my business I will need to make sure I abide the laws which cover; health and safety, fire precautions, the environment, employee rights, the building, intellectual property (for example business names, inventions and copyrights), fair trading (consumer credit, consumer protection and competition law), keeping information about people, licences and insurance.

Imagine if someone you loved was shot. You call the cops, but they say that there is nothing that can be done because there are no laws saying they have to punish the criminal. If there were no laws, criminal could get away with crimes like that repeatedly without any punishment. This is a prime example of why laws are needed to keep society in order. Egyptian civilizations created laws so that their society would last longer than other civilizations because people would respect their morals. The purpose of the law is mainly seen as the achievement of justice for everyone. Justice can be seen differently according to differing values in society. Laws are needed for protection, for proper function of society and for fair outcomes.

Society would be in chaos if we didn’t have laws. We would live in a barbaric world without rights, justice, and stability. People would have many different viewpoints and would never be able to maintain relationships with one another. So the questions what is the purpose of law, what goals is it meant to serve, and why is it uniquely cable of achieving them, all have an answer. The most obvious reason is because we in fact do have protection, justice, stability and relationships in our society. The reason we have those things is the implementation of law. Our society as a majority wants those values implemented in their daily lives. Our society being so large will never have one unified view on various subjects, so our system has been made that we are persuaded into the viewpoints of a majority. The main goal of law is to be a binding set of rules that persuade society into a majority view, in order to maintain a stable community.

Law can be defined as the written agreement that a society agrees upon this dictates appropriate and acceptable conduct and behaviour we display toward each other. Law is the foundation of the society it can only work if the society abides by it and work to maintain its existence, this will help solve any problems and crimes.

If someone were to ask me, "What has the government done for you today?" I would most likely say nothing, but as I researched I have looked back on my past and my present. I have realized realized that through the years I have really noticed that laws do hold a foundation on my everyday life as well as others. Laws are principles and regulations that are established under the authority of the state and/or the nation. They help to form the foundation for a country that protects and provides for its citizens.
