For those of you who don’t watch tennis, Gael Monfils is among the most talented and fun to watch players in the world. He’s also one of the most mentally weak and inconsistent players on the ATP World Tour. Monfils is a one-man show, who plays with a style and mindset entirely his own.
Monfils was born in Paris, France on Sept. 1, 1986 to his father Rufin Monfils and mother Sylvette Cartesse. Rufin, a former football player (soccer to Americans) from the island of Guadeloupe, clearly passed along his athletic genes to his son.
As an adolescent, Monfils won the French under-13 and under-14 100m championships. Many kids win races, so what’s the big deal? Well, the races Monfils won were national races that France’s fastest youth participated in. You can see that speed when he’s on a tennis court. Monfils chases down balls that seemed to be clear winners and does so with an athletic flair and fluidity rarely seen between the white lines. I can describe Monfils’ speed and athleticism ad nauseam, but until you see it, you won’t understand. With that sort of speed, the Frenchman could have become a professional sprinter, yet he chose tennis.

Imagine another parallel world where Monfils plays alongside his favorite NBA player, Carmelo Anthony. If he did not play tennis, Monfils would play basketball, which isn’t hard to imagine. With his freakish athletic ability and build, Monfils looks like a slashing small
In the essay, The Colonel, Michael Hogan illustrates the importance of the influential sport of tennis. Hogan writes about how tennis changed his life from an early age. When he was younger he saw tennis as a rich mans sport in which he had no interest. One of his much-respected neighbors, the colonel, approached Hogan’s father with the idea that his son might like to learn how to play tennis. After pondering the thought with his father, Hogan decided to take the offer. The Colonel became his mentor as they spent tireless days perfecting his swing, improving his serve, and practicing against each other. His main competitor though was a boy named Tommy Gallagher. Often, the two boys would compete with the victor being Gallagher. Yet, Hogan

Tennis is more than just a sport for Damien Heller-Chen, it is a lifestyle. When he was six years old, he got introduced to tennis and found it as a very enjoyable sport. Many sports are intense and competitive, which is why Heller-Chen chose tennis, as he fell in love with a less competitive sport. Heller-Chen enjoys the feeling of having control in the game. He feels empowered since he is center stage of the game and not on a team. Tennis takes dedication as he practices for eight to 14 hours a week at The Boars Head.
A few years ago I was training to be professional tennis player at one of India’s top tennis academies. I had been playing tennis only for ten months when my tennis coach suggested I participate in the upcoming national level fastest serve tennis tournament. There was a fear in me, a fear of facing the more skilled, experienced, and accomplished competition, yet my mind wanted to overcome that fear and trust my coach and ten months of training. My coach had immense faith in my abilities to perform well, but being the underdog, I lacked the confidence to compete alongside top ranked players. As the tournament date grew closer, I found myself battling between two paths - give in to my fear and surrender any chance of winning, or escape my comfort

Yet again, I had to fight hard to beat one of my toughest opponents, Navratilova. In 1975, I won my first Grand Slam Title and I went on to win in the next four years, consecutively. One strategy I took to win a Grand Slam title was to shoot for the lines…. “I felt hungry to win...when the chips were down, I went for passing shots and I made them. I hit the lines.” Although tennis was my passion and I loved it very much, I had hard decisions to
