Growing up I lived in different inner city nebighorhoods within Saint Louis city that had heavy gang activity. Although I personally never got involved in any gang ativity a lot of guys I grew up with or hung out with were directly involved in gang activity, which mostly consisted of drug transactions. Most of these guys were young black males between the ages of 15 all the way up to 28. All came from single mother households that lacked positive role models and lacked parentel supervision. I think sports based programs that seek to dismantle the gang culture as something to be appealing, while at the same time using sports to build confidence, teach discipline, and build a positive peer
In Policing Gangs in America, Charles Katz and Vincent Webb describes every issue in American Gangs today. The ultimate goal of this book is how the gang officers work and the different kind of atmosphere they work in. Their job isn’t like other law enforcement jobs. It’s one of the more dangerous occupation in the Criminal Justice system. These gang officers focus on how they react to public gang issues.
In 2015, Nashville, Tennessee experienced the highest rate of juvenile violence then compared to the last ten years (Bennett, 2016). In fact, Nashville far exceeded other large cities such as Oakland, California and Louisville, Kentucky (Bennett, 2016). Nashville juveniles were responsible for 75 homicides, which is twice as many as Oakland, California (Bennett, 2016). Nashville juveniles committed 215 violent crimes, with 159 of them included the use of a firearm (Bennett, 2016). These statistics are alarming and show that juvenile gang activity in Nashville is of great concern (Bennett, 2016). Nashville’s Metro Police have concluded that youths today are using guns as way to resolve disagreements, rather than what has typically been accomplished, in the past, through fist fights (Bennett, 2016).
This week I read chapter 5 of American street gangs (old book) Tim Deleany mentioned 3 points of what happens inside a gang that many don’t know, the first point is the categories they have based on the age the recruits are, the second point is the categories they are placed in depending on the activities they are involved, the third point is the process that involves the recruitment, punishment, and leaving the gang. At the conclusion of the paper I would be providing an experience my uncle went through when he was leaving the gang.
I have almost 18 of working with at-risk youth to provide intervention, diversion or employment services and program referrals starting in 1998 with the Mayor’s Gang Intervention Project Pride Program as a Youth Outreach Worker I. My population target was at risk a high-risk, gang-impacted 12 to 18 year old participants at the Gardner Community Center located in a highly gang-impacted neighborhood where there is a multi-generational Norteno gang influence from one of the oldest gangs in the city of San Jose, Varrio Horse Shoe. I was in charged of implementing pro-social activities like educational and recreational field trips, which included college campus visits and teamwork oriented recreational activities like white water rafting and camping
My client Henry and the 38th street gang is innocent. There is not sufficient evidence or any evidence at all that ties my clients to the murder of Jose Williams. My clients are being treated unfairly and receiving unequal treatment from the court system. The evidence presented before you ties the Downey gang to the murder of Mr. Williams. My clients were at the wrong place and the wrong time and as a result are being thrown these false accusations. I highly request that the judge's ruling from the original case should be overturned. When asking ourselves what the best way to combat injustice, we need to think about how prejudice is known to be a negative behavior towards someone else which then lead to discrimination. If we have people learn
The 1998 National Youth Gang Survey (2000) asked for a real estate agent sample of U.S. police agencies about youth gang crime. J.T operates exactly like a franchise. J.T must pay a 20 percent due towards the board of directors of the gang. The boards of directors are essentially the big bosses of the gang. Anything left over is a profit for J.T, but he must handle the expense that the gang has. These costs can be separated as fixed and variable cost. The fixed costs are the dues and the Extortionary taxes and the variable costs are weapons or mercenary fighter. Any earning made after these cost go towards J.T pocket, which are tax free. The similarity between a corporation and a gang is astonishing. An example of this is the similarities that drug dealer and a newly hired corporate worker face. A drug dealer must face the same initial obstacles that your everyday worker goes through. The drug dealers must start out at the bottom as a “foot solider”, which is the case for a regular worker. An example of this is when an aspiring accountant starts out as an intern of their future employment. The end goal for both of these careers is to get to
The purpose of this paper is to review and verify a recent study by Scott H. Decker of the University of Missouri – St. Louis, entitled Collective and Normative Features in Gang Violence (Decker & VanWinkle, 1996). The study will attempt to address why our local increase in gang violence has reached monumental heights causing an increase in gang members appearing your court.
This picture is amazing eye catching picture because of the contrast of the grey background and bright center. Josh had the brightest coat while everyone else was wearing light or dark contrast colors. The fire hydrant has another eye catcher because two feet are resting on the side.
Will it help on a macro level? Not without other measures being put in place. The gang problem in Chicago must be addressed in a proactive way. Nykea Aldridge's murder is the symptom of a larger illness that must be treated in the community. Restorative justice for two offenders won't be enough.
Each generation has their own special perks that make them unique. The millennials are most commonly referred to as the technological generation. While that can make them stand out compared to other generations because of the great advances in the world, it can mask what this generation is really doing. Bullying and gang activity have increased within the millennials, enough that it affects almost all teens. Teen behavior has worsened as each new generation is introduced because of technology, bullying and gang activity.
Is it the case that the government is outnumbered, and out powered by the incidence of youth crime, and if so what are the consequences of this?
At first, the investigation began with searches of residence and racnches, which, the results became useless. The US government had a high demanding pressure on the DEA to quickly advance with the investigation. Due to the High-level investigation from the DEA, Mexican law enforcemen officials and Mexican drug traffickers created a plan to lower the high intensity of the investigation. The plan was for the Mexican Federal Judicial Police woud receive a annonimous letter, stating where DEA agent Camarena and Captain Zavala were being held hostage at the Bravo drug gang’s in La Angostura, Michoacan. Following, the plan the MFJP will raid the Bravo gangs’s ranch, put an end to the Bravo drug gang and eventually find the bodies of Camarena and
For my first journal entry, I would like to focus on the article we read by Katz, regarding the establishment of a police gang unit. The reason I would like to focus on this article, is due to my current assignment as the sergeant of our plain clothes unit, which focuses on drugs and crimes. I work for the Elmhurst, IL Police Department, which is an affluent suburb just outside of Chicago. We do not have any gangs that reside in town, but we have been experiencing a rash of crimes, where the offenders are juvenile and young adult gang members from the west and south sides of Chicago. Over the last few months, I have had to adjust the mission of our unit based off of current crime trends, which politically has been causing problems. These incidents include a recent carjacking with a gun from Elmhurst College, a small liberal arts college in our City (http://www.chicagotribune.com/suburbs/elmhurst/news/ct-elh-elmhurst-college-carjacking-tl-0125-20180123-story.html). Just a week prior to this, we had residential burglaries (http://www.chicagotribune.com/suburbs/elmhurst/news/ct-met-elmhurst-attempted-residential-burglaries-20180117-story.html). A few days ago we had more car burglaries, but arrested those subjects (http://www.chicagotribune.com/suburbs/elmhurst/news/ct-elh-residential-burglary-arrests-tl-0201-20180129-story.html).
William Easterly stated,“poor people die not only because of the world’s indifference to their poverty, but also because of ineffective efforts by those who do care.” As developing nations become sophisticated in demeanor, it is expected that crime rates would decrease in return. However, a plethora of evidence exemplifies a correlation between corruption in the government and rapid economic growth. Gang-related violence has increased as developing countries improve economically and become an established nation. Thus, the paradigm of gang violence and crime has continued to grow as innocent lives are sacrificed to corruption and power. To minimize the threat of organized gang crime among developing nations, governmental agencies must increase law enforcement and reduce internal corruption.
