1. Two things that I learned about gas warfare that I see represented in the painting are the effects of the gas and the devestation of it being released. The effects of gas are shown in the painting by all of the men wearing blindfolds and walking in a line with their hands on the person in front of them. This shows the effects of gas because the blindfols make it seem that they are blind from the gas and and their eyes must are sensitive to the light. Also, the soldiers walking in a line with their hand on the person in front of them shows that they need to be guided by someone who wasn't hit by the gas because they can't see and can't find their own way back to the hospital where they will be treated. On the other hand, this painting
Like the painting, the sketch exhibits a number of West 's finest imaging and clearly and convincingly depicts all of the feeling of a frightful scene. The larger oil on canvas work isn 't one portrait, but rather, a
Within a painting, the watercolors and each discrete stroke of the brush gives each element a diverse connotation. The Parade By Abraham Rattner, was painted in 1969 to illustrate the protests of the Vietnam war that the United States was involved in.This exceptional piece of art work exhibits the warm colors of the crowd and the fiery blazes colored across the skies, highlighting the widespread conflicts the nation had against this horrendous battle. During this time, individuals were protesting against the government’s actions in order to conserve tranquility. This painting captures the scenery that had taken place during these frightful days of war and the disputes happening internationally.
The background are grey and other dark colours representing the mood of the that time since it was fairly grim and not a happy time during the depression and right before an impending war. The painting tells the perspective of an isolationist who do not see the consequences of ignoring the overseas war. The character in the painting can be seen as a wife and husband, and a soldier against an enemy soldier, to put deeper meaning it would be the wife representing isolationists, the husband representing Canada (Canadian politicians) and the two soldiers with one being the Canadian army and the other the enemy. The story in the painting is that the wife/isolationist tries to keep her husband/Canada to stay on the other side, the safer side, whereas the monsters fear, duty, and guilt continues to pester and haunt the husband pulling him to choose to go to battle. He fears the advances of the axis powers, is guilty of the sacrifices that have been made so far just so they don’t have to fight and feel responsible as a Canadian, as a nation to protect the peace of the world.
Paintings are different than books or movies because they allow you to create your own thoughts and interpretations rather than telling you what you should think. This allows creative and different takes on an original piece of art.The Surrender, a painting by Joseph Griffith, was published in October of 2006. It features two sides in what appears to be a war. The left side is occupied by the epitome of American icons and showcases the American flag, while the left side contains, not only enemies of America, but “bad guys” from classic movies surrendering with a white flag. This painting can be interpreted as labeling popular American icons as heroes, showing the change in society’s change in what they consider a role model.
Writers used imagery as a way to show how graphic and disturbing war can be. In the poem (Doc. D) the author describes how he would be “ killing women or even watching women get killed”. This is used to show the violent and disturbing actions many people have to do while at war. Another author describes how he saw (Doc. B) someone “ yelling out, stumbling, and floundering like a man on fire”. This shows how on a daily basis many soldiers saw events that would mentally scar them. In Document D the author describes how he would have kill men and keep shooting them to make sure they were dead. This is used to show how graphic the life of war was. The use of imagery is an effective way to show how disturbing the war is.
An artist's job is to interpret, and express the aspects of life in a creative fashion. War has played a big part in shaping our human history, and many artists have portrayed their feelings about art through paintings, and even monuments. Whether it be to show; the joy of victory, the sorrow of defeat, or to educate the public on the gory realities of war. Art about war can also show us a great amount of history of the kinds of weapons that were used at the time. It is necessary for artists to interpret, and criticize all aspects of life; even ones as tragic as war, It can make the public more aware of what goes on in times of war.
War and expressions of emotions are common themes in most great works of art. In the painting by Kollwitz called Poverty, it shows a woman holding her head in her hands. The woman is looking at an infant sleeping in its bed. You can see the light from the background shining through the window unto the baby. Although there is light shining on the baby, it also shows that the baby is dying and the woman is actually crying. The portrait also shows two figures standing in the background in darkness. On page 390 it states, “Though the infant and the
O’Brien used imagery to illustrate the war in a sense to make you feel as if you were there with the soldiers. While staying short and simple, he was also very specific of the details. “Ted Lavender was shot in the head on his way back from peeing. He lay with his mouth open. The teeth were broken. There was a swollen black bruise under his left eye. The cheekbone was gone” [423] is a perfect example of how O’Brien used imagery. This passage makes you see in your mind what the soldiers seen through their eyes.
The focus of the painting is based on the two soldiers passing the shell to each other and then into to the artillery to shoot against the German army. The gesture of working together in harsh realities carries the message of unity and self-sacrifice for the war. One soldier does not have his uniform on meaning no protective gear that characterizes unselfishness in the center of a great battle. Furthermore, there is a soldier, who has an injury on his hand, yet still continuing to fight. The wound shows contribution in the face of danger and heroism marked by the bandaged arm on his return to the conflict. It sets an example of selflessness and bravery and the artist shows that in war, sacrifice can be represented by their schedule of duty.
The contour lines of the painting are drawn strong and hard, isolating each figure. The lines in the painting are mainly vertical. The majority of the people are all standing up, the soldiers weapons are pointed upward, and the pillars are painted tall. The vertical lines communicates a sense of heighten spirituality. Also, if you look closely behind John Brown, the artist manipulates the lines of the building to put a cross-shaped figure right above his head. The combination of these two factors gives us the feeling that Thomas Hovenden was trying to portray John Brown as a Christ-like Martyr heading to his crucifixion.
In the Metropolitan Museum of Art, on the second floor, there is an exhibit dedicated to artwork inspired by World War I. The artist, George Grosz, depicts in his black and white sketching In Three Days You’ll Be Fit for Field Duty a man being tortured. The torture exposed in the picture is known as Water Cure torture. A funnel of water is forced down the throat of the man being tortured. Five men are torturing the prisoner although only two men are shown in the picture. There are hands all around the picture indicating that it is a group effort to mutilate the prisoner. A “Love of Cruelty” is seen by the two German soldiers in the
‘Gas! GAS! Quick, boys!' explains the speed of this section and that there is urgency in what is happening. The image created is that everyone in 'an ecstasy of fumbling' was forced to run out into the mist, unaware of what is out there. Anyone wanting to fight in the war would become nervous at the image of himself running out into a blood bath the gas would burn and melt anyone who inhales it causing a very painful death. The graphic images displayed here are affecting and can be hard to be forgotten. The word 'ecstasy,' is ironic as it gives the impression of extreme joy because it is a drug, yet the opposite
Some of the colors seem out of place. The variation in color may be a result of the author emphasizing certain areas of the sculpture. Most notably, the artist selects to present the sculpture in three-dimensions, using this technique to accentuate and magnify the combatants and their physical attributes. Certain parts of these dimensions seem to stick right out at you, giving the viewer a good impression of the violence and hatred of war.
The way Russian artist”Kandinsky” used the colors to depict the scene of war in his painting “Improvisation 31 (Sea Battle) is completely amusing. The painting did not represent any particular war itself. Due to the formless shapes and use of bright color, the image completely looks like as abstract form of art. However, with focus you can observe several recognizable images. The most noticeable thing was the turbulence of waves that he represents very effective that is create by impact of ammunition used by both the ships. The image defines a situation of war as both the ships are firing cannons on each other. Including that human attachment to the material things, that in most of the cases becomes the reason behind dispute and war.
“Before I sound off, I’m going to inform you that we’re not in the 1900s, so don’t say, ‘spill the beans,’ ever again. Now, if you were to mentally replay the scene, you would notice that I didn’t hug her, she hugged me. Did you see my arms wrap around her? No. Also, why you’re bothering me about something as puerile as this is questionable, but I’m not in the questioning mood. All I wanna do is hit a certain someone,” I pointed at Monster, “In the face with a paint pellet, so here’s what we gonna do. We’re going to drop the subject, march in through that entrance, play the violent game know as paintball, and have ourselves a good time. Any objections?”
