Research Methods in Criminal Justice
Gregory Koehle
My goal for this assignment is to conduct research on how being in the field affects an officer’s life both professionally and personally. This article should allow both professionals as well as individuals to get an idea as to what it’s like to a police officer. Police officers dedicate their lives to not only protecting but also representing their city, town or community with the protection they provide. Their main goal is to protect the citizens from danger as well as prevent crime. Within the article, I will explain how being in a field officer can have multiple affects

The kind of interview structure that I would choose to use would be one that follows the projected path of my proposed research method. This would include many questions which would be everything from why the officer chose that line of work to how the stresses affected his everyday and personal life. .Below is a list of questions I would ask.
1. Have you ever felt like your life had been in danger while on the job? Why?
2. Did you know that you were going to be a police officer growing up?
3. How many years have you been an officer? What is your rank?
4. What has been the most satisfactory thing that you have ever done for someone while on the job?
5. Are you able to recall the experience? Did you save anyone’s life?
6. Do you plan on retiring at a certain age or do you plan on working as long as you are able to?
7. Have you ever had to use brutal force on someone who resisted? How did it feel? Were you scared?
8. What are you opinions about their being a stereotype about officers?
9. What would have been your other option as a career had you not become a police officer?
10. How much danger is involved in being a police officer?
11. What is a typical day for you? Do you have a routine that you follow?
12. Do you get in trouble if you do not meet your ticket quota?
13. How many times a year if any, are
4. After that, I will ensure I take “time-outs” to give myself a routine to look forward to during my day.
Consider the following questions for your interview and include at least two additional questions of your own:
3. Did you need to change any aspect of the activity as you were working ?How ?
Question 1: Please provide to me your career path that has led you to your current position.
2: During the summer, I got a working opportunity at the local government of my hometown. My job was to
Oklahoma Highway Patrol is the agency I have always hoped to work for. As a child, I loved their hats and back then, some Troopers drove Camaros, my favorite car. I was inspired to be in law enforcement mostly from my dad, who joined the Shawnee Police Department in 1987 and retired after 23 years of service. I can remember coming home after school and asking my dad what he had done that day at work and he always had a funny story, he never shed any light on the danger of the job; I grew up assuming police officers never witnessed terrifying or awful things, I only knew the fun and exciting part of it. After working side by side with the Oklahoma Highway Patrol as a deputy at the Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s Office, I always enjoyed working car accidents with the highway patrol and learning more about the long history of the agency. I became most interested in the agency after coming home from military training. I noticed several similarities in the Oklahoma Highway Patrol and the military; physical fitness and their rigorous training academy. The position I have sought after the most is becoming a field trooper, then moving on to become a pilot in their aviation support division. For me, the pay is also enticing. I am married to a pilot and together we have one son. It is very important to me to be able to make a decent living and do what I love, law enforcement. To me, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol would be the best career decision for myself and my family.
Question: What has been your experience during your tenure as a police officer and administrator?
During the course of my undergraduate work I spent a good deal of time considering exactly what I wished to do after I received my Associate of Arts degree in Criminal Justice and my Bachelor of Science degree in Justice Studies. Ever since I was a child I have had an interest in law enforcement in some way or another. Having spent a good deal of my childhood fishing and hiking I was always interested in environmental conservation, so with that in mind I always had an interest in becoming a game warden or a forest ranger. As time has gone on I still hold on to the ideas and the ideals that I held when I was younger, but now I also would consider a career in a federal law enforcement organization such as the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), National Security Agency (NSA), or the like. Ultimately I

Originally I had planned to go to Waldorf University and major in criminal justice to become a police officer. I saw many two faced/unreasonable officers throughout my years of growing up that I wanted to do something different. I remember hearing about the cases on tv and thinking, hey, I can make a difference. I wanted to become a police officer to show people that not
In conclusion, it is evident that research is imperative. Research must be kept within the parameters of the so that the information obtained us justifiable and can be used in a court of law when necessary. Police officer’s dedicate themselves to striving in protecting their communities from harm. Officers put their lives on the line as well as place strain on their family lives so that we don’t have to.
The reason I want to be involved in law enforcement is the diversification of the career field. I learned that inside of law enforcement I will have the opportunity to save or change someones life on a daily basis. Then being grateful that I possibly saved someones life just by my mere presence in a area or certain situation. The key thing with law enforcement to me is community policing, the factor that allows people to smile when they see a patrol car in there area. I am willing to accept the challenge that it is my responsibility to protect and sever my community. The place that is not only my community but is also home which I will protect as someone
I have always wanted to be a police officer when I was little because when my dad told me that both of my grandpas from both my mom’s and dad’s side of the family were in the marines and my uncle and cousin are police officers and that he was also a police officer I wanted to be one too. Later I found out my brother was thinking of being a S.W.A.T member before I wanted to be one too. So I told him maybe we could both be in S.W.A.T and we could be in the same squad. This inspired me a lot because I always wanted to be one and a bunch of my family used to be in some task force.
5. After interning for 6-months in a law firm, the office decided to hire me as a Health Insurance Lawyer.
There are many possible reasons for someone desiring to become a police officer and the attributes that would best suit a person to be a police officer are also numerous. Surveys of active police officers reveal a number of selfless and self-interested reasons for pursuing such a career. In addition, multiple studies of active police officers and their departments define a number of personality traits sought by police departments and exhibited by successful police officers.
