When the coroner snapped his notebook shut and told Gavin Arneson that his father was dead, the teenager's tenuous family life took one more erratic twist. Arneson, who had just turned 18, was facing a shaky adulthood and another stint of homelessness. "He said something like 'Well, I'm sorry for your loss,' and that was about it," says the slightly built high school senior. "I think if I was 17, he would have tried to set me up with something or someone to make sure I had a home. But in this case, I was 18 and on my own." Arneson has risen above these and other adversities to gain national praise not only for his perseverance but his intellect. He recently received a four-year, full-tuition scholarship to study nursing at New York University and was awarded the National Honor Society's annual …show more content…
Arneson and his brother learned to be resourceful while growing up living with either their mom or their dad, both alcoholics and struggling with their own demons, he says. But he soon learned he wasn't alone in Evergreen. The Clear Creek High School community wrapped him in its arms, providing strength and support as he continued his stubborn pursuit of an education. "I honestly don't think I could have done this without the teachers and everyone else here," Arneson says. "They kept me on track and told me to keep pursuing that goal." That doggedness is revealed in many ways. Arneson is the Class of 2017's valedictorian and president of Clear Creek's student council and honor society. He started the first Colorado high school chapter of She's the First, a nonprofit that provides scholarships to girls in low-income countries. He's worked at least two jobs a week since freshman year and supported his dad, who was jobless, blind and fighting diabetes. His dad's health had begun failing before the December day Arneson found his body in their two-bedroom Lakewood

Mike’s American is a cozy and welcoming multi-story institution of an eatery, serving delectable American fare. Appetizer options, such as the hot spinach and artichoke dip with parmesan and jack cheeses and the crunchy, spicy firecracker shrimp, are fun to share and make for great starters. Popular entrée items include the beer-marinated drunken ribeye with redskin potatoes, the roast half chicken in a brown butter sauce and the hickory-grilled fish of the day. Mike’s American also has a tantalizing array of burgers, including the vegetarian-friendly veggie patty made with quinoa, rice, black beans and beets and the classic bacon cheeseburger topped with homemade, spicy “wicked sauce”. And it doesn’t get more American than with the deep dish
During a press conference on Monday, Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Steve Smith Sr announced that he plans to retire after the 2015 season.
What if your best friend went on an adventure. They had everything they had ever wanted. They didn't tell you or their family where they were going or how long they would be gone. They just picked up and left. Would you respect their decision to not tell anyone their plans? Would you think that this was a good idea of theirs, or would you think that this was a stupid decision on their part? Well this is what Christopher McCandless did. In 1968 McCandless was born. He was born to a good, wealthy, and happy family. He had everything any child could ever wish for. He was smart, athletic, and had a good education. In June 1990 he completed collage. In July of 1990 Christopher McCandless left his family and almost all belongings, and didn't tell anyone where he was going, or how long he'd be gone. Three years later McCandless was found dead in a blue bus located in Alaska. He had died of starvation. He went off and, ¨lived his life.¨ McCandless went out and lived in the wild. While Christopher McCandless died peacefully, the question has arose on whether McCandless was a noble adventurer or an arrogant fool. The evidence from many stories and social media clearly states that McCandless was in fact an arrogant fool. Christopher McCandless was an arrogant fool because he was not prepared, he

I believe Connie was murdered and raped by Arnold. I wish that was the case that he dropped her off at the hospital or even back at home with her family. Like you stated, I highly doubt he had a change of heart. She was a misguided teen who wanted to be more mature than she actually was. A sad story that left us all guessing what happened to her. The kid defiantly had a lot of mental issues.

Allan Bakke recorded suit in the wake of discovering that minority competitors with bring down capabilities had been admitted to medicinal school under a program that saved spaces for "impeded" candidates. Kevin Gates is an inspirational speaker and pushes people to push them self. “Love the people god gave you because he will need them back someday.” Is what he is saying in this quote is don't spend so much time on not liking people and just enjoy life and don't fight with others. “Don't lose your mind trying to wait for people to come to their senses.” In this quote Kevin is saying don't tear yourself down when people don't talk to you or contact you.
When you see yourself living out your dream, the thought of what you're most passionate about pulls you in. Passions in one's life change based on what had affected that person. Dreams are defined to change. However, the benefits of these thoughts is that they belong to you and only you. Not one person's opinions matter but your own. Chris McCandless simply was living out his own ideal life, the way he wanted; not to the idea of his parents, his friends or of society. McCandless wanted to escape society and civilization which he felt was tying him down, while also trying to discover himself. McCandless is not by any means a wacko. He was simply defying society and its ideal expectation it holds upon us as a whole.
From the time Ned enters boarding school, to his time as a code talker, tradition plays an imperative role in the narrative. At first, Navajo traditions and language are virtually beaten out of students in boarding school. A wooden sign at the entrance of the school reads, “Tradition is the enemy of progress” (Bruchac, p.23). At school, the children were told not to even speak their language, and if they were caught, they were punished ruthlessly. As Ned put it, “Anything that belonged to the Navajo way was bad, and our Navajo language was the worst.” (Bruchac, p.23)
Forty-one-year-old Oregon medical marijuana patient Kristie Groce of Portland is no stranger to adversity. Kristie has suffered immeasurably with numerous medical illnesses and injuries over the years. She had even been written off as terminal and placed on hospice care at one point. Cannabis has not only given Kristie her life back, but now she has learned she is creating a new life, something she was told would never happen.
In the world of literature today, American essayists continuously influence America’s modern society, whether it’s through their style, their experiences, or their overall message that is portrayed in their writing. The purpose of essay writing is for the author to determine their goal, through the stylistic manner of persuasion, entertainment, or factual information. Among many of the famous American essayists like; Frederick Douglas, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and Thomas Paine, their goals in writing have been inspired by a variety of contextual influences. One of these now-famous American essayists, Sherman Alexie, a Native American author who’s work in the realm of Native American culture has been labeled as remarkable, yet controversial. Through
Ever since she was young, Everly had goals for the future. She was known for being a sage and wise young girl. Growing up, Everly paid scrupulous and careful attention to school. She was often stoic since anything unrelated to school did not interest her. Everly’s friends would often beg her to take some respite from studying. Everly would appease her friends every once in awhile and go shopping or do some other frivolous activity with them. During class, she would always know the answer but was unwilling to refute anyone’s claims in fear of instigating tension or rivalry. Everly worked very hard to make her dreams -of becoming the governor of Michigan- tangible. After years of hard work, she finally achieved her dreams. Unlike her predecessor,
