Gay and Lesbian Adoption: Is it Good for the Kids “About 19 percent of same-sex couples raising children reported having an adopted child in the house in 2009, up from just 8 percent in 2000.” As society changes there opinions on same-sex marriage they more gays and lesbians are adopting. There was recent rise in same-sex adoption but there is still people in U.S. that are against same-sex adoption. Recently a judge in Kentucky objected gay and lesbian adoption. This caused a huge uproar and had people thinking whether or not gay and lesbian adoption is okay for the children. One article feels that state legislators are putting more hurdles in the way of adoption and preventing children from getting into loving and caring homes (“Adoptions are declining,”2017). Gays and lesbians being able to adopt will provide loving homes, get kids out of foster care, and they choose to be parents. Providing a Loving Home One of the most important thing for children is to have a loving and supporting home. Having a loving and supportive home can come from same-sex couple or heterosexual couples. According to the article Overview of gay and lesbian parenting, adoption and foster care by American Civil Liberties “Good parenting is not influenced by sexual orientation. Rather, it is influenced most profoundly by a parent's ability to create a loving and nurturing home -- an ability that does not depend on whether a parent is gay or straight.” This just shows how important it is for kids to
Younger children usually have an easier time adjusting to a gay and lesbian parented home. They haven’t learned the social biases against gays and lesbians yet.” (Nighlad).
Social attitudes about family life have undergone profound changes in recent decades. While public acceptance of homosexuality remains a deeply decisive issue, adoption by gays and lesbians has become increasingly acceptable, with 46% of the national population favoring gay adoption. (Pew Research Center, 2006) In New York State, statutes developed to permit gays to adopt are among the most permissive in the nation. New York Adoption Code 18 NYCRR 421.16 (h)(2) (2004) states that "applicants shall not be rejected solely on the basis of homosexuality", which expressly prohibits discrimination based on sexual orientation when determining who may adopt.
Society and social institutions are made up of intertwined parts and each part alone cannot sustain society or the social system by themselves. Durkheim (functionalist) believes that as a society we need deviance to promote social change and social unity, without deviance we cannot define and clarify our moral boundaries. We need gay marriage to deviate society and brake the traditional marriage/relationship and encourage equality for all. The idea of gay marriage conflicts with their idea of marriage; that somehow when two people of the opposite sex are in love it is less official. Marx (conflict theorist) states that the dominant ideology in our country is that marriage is the union of a man and a woman, therefore, two men or two women can not be married.
The number of children being adopted by same-sex parents has almost tripled in the past decade. However, to this day, some states still ban gay adoption completely while other states use
Secondly a big portion of kids are adopted by lesbian/gay couples. “More than 16,000 adopted children are living with lesbian and gay parents in California, the highest number in the U.S” Shows how much of an impact gay couples

Since the 1990’s approximately 8-10 million children in the US alone are raised in a Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, or Transgender (LGBT) household. Same-Sex Adoption is controversial because many people throughout the world are against LGBT adoption; but when faced with the number of kids who pray everyday for someone out there wanting to be the parent of a foster child, it is difficult to understand why the topic of gay adoption is controversial. Yes, there can be a bad outcome but there can also be a very good outcome of these kinds of adoptions. The LGBT Adoption situation can be fixed by allowing any adult or parent to adopt a child if they have the right living environment or the knowledge and skills that it takes to raise a kid in the proper way. But social workers have reservations on considering gay adoptive parents because they are fearful of how the parents will treat and raise the children and how they will grow up feeling. People who oppose same sex marriage, including U.S. elected officials, have argued that a child raised by a LGBT parent will need additional emotional support or will face social challenges compared to children with heterosexual parents (Borreli). Although many people believe that LGBT parents shouldn’t be allowed to adopt because it affects the child, LGBT parents should be allowed to adopt because many kids need a place to call home or someone they can call family, they need someone in a similar situation that they can talk
According to an organization called Lifelong Adoptions who are registered with the Registry of California Adoption Facilitators, “Many gay couples form relationships that are more stable than many heterosexual marriages.” (LGBT 1). Which allow the couple to be together longer and have a longer life together. The more stable relationship will be a good relationship model for the child because studies have shown the type of partner children tend to grow up having are based around the stability of their parents relationship. Again according to the organization Lifelong Adoptions who are registered with the Registry of California Adoption Facilitators, “Children of gay parents report they felt less hindered by gender stereotypes than they might have been if raised in a heterosexual household.” (LGBT 1). Being tied down to gender stereotypes and not letting a child explore their curiosity is a difficult topic to get around for most, because many people have encountered sayings like,“Boys can’t wear pink.” or “You throw like a girl.”. Without those sayings being said by the ones the children are being raised by, they feel less likely to have limitations exploring who they are and what they want to be growing
Adoption is all about finding a reliable and safe home for less fortunate children. Adoption is also a way for couples who cannot have children of their own get a chance to take care and raise a child as their own. As shown in a 2007 report by the Williams Institute and the Urban Institute, 65,000 kids were living with adoptive gay parents between 2000
Good parenting is not influenced by sexual orientation, but by parents creating a loving and nurturing home. With increased inclusiveness, more children are now in homes with qualified parents over being in the state system. Adoptive parents are being discriminated on adopting children based on gender identity, sexual orientation, or marital status and so more children are “aging out” of the foster care system. Children are aging out of foster care because the federal government is not allowing parents to adopt based on sexual orientation, gender identity, or marital status and those children are going without having the loving and nurturing home that they need so the Every Child Deserves a Family Act should be put in place.
Adoption has been around for many years, but only recently has the question of gay adoption risen. Do same-sex couples experience more of the difficulties in adoption than heterosexual marriage rights and same-sex couples’ ability to adopt is really big. There were many changes in the same-sex couples laws over the years. There are plenty of situations where gay couples successfully raised children through adoption or foster care. The children's lives are the same the impact on them is nothing to different from other kids. Same-sex couples can adopt I mean I believe they can and it would be fair everybody the same.
Gay adoption can help children in foster cares have a home. Gay adoption increases the amount of people able to adopt. If straight couples were only allowed to adopt, the amount of children in foster care would be increasing faster. The process of adopting is no different for gay couples than straight couples. They have the same process to go though. Both types of parent require a criminal record check. children of same-sex couples may have the advantage of being more open-minded and understanding to differences. Gay parents can give children knowledge on things they have experienced personally.Research shows that children who are raised by gay parents grow up as successfully as children raised by straight parents.
Recently, research has shown that gay and lesbian parents share the parental characteristics of support, protection, and stability that children need. Sexual orientation should not be problem when adopting children. Children adopted by same-sex couples are more likely to be placed with parents who are patient, dedicated to their children, and have respect for the differences of the
We have all heard the mantra that a child needs to be raised by both and a mother and afather. The qualities contributed by a man and a woman are each vital to raising a well roundedindividual and therefore the idea of having two mothers or two fathers is simplyunacceptable«right? Well what about no parents? No mother? No father? That child is bound to be
There are currently 107,011 kids in the U.S. foster care system that are hoping and waiting to be adopted, so just imagine how many of those children could be adopted if more lesbian and gay couples were able to adopt. According to lifelong adoption agencies more and more gay and lesbian couples are becoming parents through artificial insemination, a surrogate, or LGBT adoption. It’s hard for same sex couples to adopt because adoption agencies that have religious beliefs against same sex couples reject them, or a state law prohibits same sex parents. Same sex couples face much opposition from a large number of people even though they do not have well supported arguments for their beliefs. Many studies have been done in an attempt to figure
