Women during WWII were confused about their roles in the war. There were two common attitudes women in the 1940’s had towards the war. On one hand women felt inspired to rise to the challenge and fill the void left by men. On the other hand, some women felt, “cheated,” and unable to carry on due to the absence of men. Even though most women agree that gender equality and equal opportunity is positive, women who lived through WWII would most likely argue that it is not always worth the sacrifice.
From initial observations, it seems that a large portion of women from the WWII time period felt confident in their ability to fill roles in society left by men who became soldiers. During the war, women were needed as man power to fill the production jobs that men left behind to fight in the war. This was new territory for women, and many needed a source of confidence and encouragement. This sense of confidence was spread through war posters. War posters from WWII served many purposes; however, it seemed that the common purpose was to build up the confidence of women, so they would join the war effort and break out of their traditional roles. Women in this time period traditionally stayed at home to take care of the household and to raise children while their husbands worked outside of the home. When WWII started many of these young husbands and fathers were taken away, leaving work outside of the home undone. Prior to the war, women would not have typically held masculine jobs
