Mesopotamia was the first civilization ever known to humankind, which meansing that a lot of evidence of their life-style have been completely destroyed. However, the code of Hammurabi, has provided vast information regarding their values and everyday lives, as it shows the problems people faced at that time, and the specific laws needed in order for individuals to live peaceful lives. Similarly to many other ancient and modern civilizations, social status was very important. The law emphasized the difference of importance between people of different social status. For example, according to code 215, 216, and 217, if a physician saves the life of a nobleman, he shall receive ten shekels, however, if the patient was a freed man, the reward was five shekels, and if the patient was a slave, the reward was only two shekels. This demonstrates that the lives of human being were not seen equally, and as a result of social structure, the life of a nobleman was more important than the life of a freed man or slave. …show more content…

Although women had a few rights, many women were seen as inferior in regards to their husbands. As mentioned in code 137, 138, and 140, men can abandon their wives, without a legitimate reason, as long as they pay the penalty price. However, according to code 142, women must have a reasonable reason in order to divorce their husbands, otherwise, they might be executed or turn into servants as mentioned in code 141 and 143.
