Development of gender stereotypes in children at home and school There are a lot of parents and teachers who communicate gender stereotypes to children while they interact. We also see how parents interact with boys and girls differently based on their gender. For example, some parents want their children to know that anything with pink is for girls, and blue is for boys. They observe what their parents can do at home, how and in what level their parents communicate to each other, what kind of activities/jobs their parents do the most, and what they expect from their children. The reasons they are behaving this way because children are observing their parents at home. They see that some of their fathers are working outside and seems to spend more time outside of home. Compared to mothers, who mostly working at home even after their actual jobs which they call it second shifts. Mothers also tend to visit neighbors’ and relatives’ houses but fathers sometimes have less interest in getting together. Their third topic was aggressive behavior gender stereotypes. Children start certain behaviors when they are in preschool. E. R. Baker at al. explains, children at their preschool age seem to hit each other, taking away toys, and use verbal or nonverbal assault. They usually learn these types of behaviors from their peers and or parents. Finally, on their last topic was prosocial behaviors. According to the article, adults expect their children to behave nicely, sharing, and helping others. But in contrast, most girls are more likely to face these conflicts than boys. Altogether, after collecting the information, researchers found out that boys/men are less likely to believe in stereotypes. They believe that both men and women can hold any occupation. They can also be involved in activities, be aggressive, and learn prosocial behaviors. Girls/women seem to believe that girls cannot be equal as boys. In most cultures, boys and girls are treated very differently. Despite the differences of gender, upbringing creates gender behavior, including aggression and gentility; societal stereotypes of gender, and most importantly, gender-based discrimination.
Feminist: the person who believes in the social, political, and economic equality of the sexes. Sexual stereotypes are deeply imbedded into today’s society. Ideals of the gender roles are passed down from generation to generation, creating a gap between what is socially acceptable for a woman to do and what is expected of a man. One thousand years ago humans chose dominance by physical capability, simply because it was essential for our survival, but the world has evolved. One thousand years ago physical strength was the most important part of survival for human beings. Men in general are physically stronger therefore it made sense to have a man lead. The world humans live in has evolved and is no longer run by the physically entailed, but by the most intelligent or creative(Adichie). Though this world has evolved, the gender expectations and stereotypes have stayed the same. Sexual stereotypes in America limit men and women to abide with,by the expectations of masculinity and feminism, create a sense of shame for women, and create a gap in today’s job industry.
Those who agree that gender is a social construct would also argue that gendered behaviour is not innate, and that it is learnt throughout development. Gender identity is defined as “the way in which being feminine or masculine, woman or man, becomes an internalized part of the way we think about ourselves” (Ryle, 2014). The idea of masculinity and femininity and the strong distinction between the two are taught to us throughout our lives. An individual’s earliest exposure to the concept of gender comes from parental influence. Many studies show that parents socialize their children from birth by creating distinct environments for boys and girls and treating son’s and daughter’s differently. For instance, parents are more likely to assign domestic chores such as cooking, mending clothes and doing laundry to daughters, whereas sons are more likely to be assigned maintenance chores such as mowing lawn, small household repairs and carrying out garbage (Lackey, 1989). Parents may also use more emotive language when talking to their daughter’s and might encourage certain interests such as math and science in son’s, by purchasing more math and science toys and committing to other promotive activities (Jacobs & Bleeker, 2004; Leaper, 1998; Tenenbaum &
Home life is a core area that can be the biggest influence on ones opinions of gender roles. The content of the article “Parental Influence on Children’s Socialization to Gender Roles” written by Susan Witt introduces where stereotypical gender association derives. Gender roles can easily be adopted through the household and when children are placed in an environment where it is easily transmitted through the parents’ then that child will follow their parents’ influences (Witt, par. 1). Schooling, media, and society are also large influences on children at a young age to behave a certain way. Self-concept is also a large chunk of the way children see themselves when they begin to grow and criticism from parents can be a large influence on shaping that child’s perspective (Witt, par. 3).
The gender based expectations are taught and the sometimes subtle, often overt lessons begin at a very young age. It starts with the color of the blanket a baby is wrapped up in, the toys bought for them to play with, and extends to the pretend play they engage in. So from the earliest ages of social awareness, society reinforces the ideals of masculine and feminine throughout life. Consequently, it is perfectly acceptable for a girl to put on a purple tutu and twirl about granting wishes to her stuffed animals, while it would be discouraged for a boy. He should be outside in the sandbox setting up his toy soldiers in a mock battle. They found that parents think that boy children cry, more upset, and get anger faster than female babies. Parents believe that female toddlers need more attention than male toddlers. Female toddlers are more socially equipped for helping people cause parents talk to them about sad things and learn how to be more equipped with the helping other people from listening to others their parents and other people at a young age. Boys are more taught to become angry and assert dominance over others. Parents only interact with their kids in ways to help them be better for their lives ahead and do what is needed of them of their own gender roles.

Within the American culture, our youth are taught that the masculine roles of the male has traditionally been associated with their role of being strong and dominant and the feminine role of a female has traditionally been associated with their role of being the follower and the nurturer. Children learn the gender roles beginning at birth through the socialization process. Historically our society has always identified male infants with blue and female infants with pink, however, with the turning of the 20th century more neutral colors are being thrown into the mix. More expecting parents are adventuring away from traditional blue and pink and choosing the neutral colors such as green and yellow. Children learn gender socialization through family members, education, other children and social media. It is expected for boys to go outside, be loud, and play rough in the dirt. As for a girl, it is expected that she remains calm, quiet, and clean at all times. Femininity in girls is related to the father 's masculinity, and his approval of the mother as a role model, and his participation in feminine activities (Gender Roles and Gender Differences). As a result, predicted by cognitive social learning theory, parental characteristics influence as gender role models for their child to imitate (Bussey & Bandura, 1999). While there is no apparent shortage of women in the media, for there are shows such as The View on ABC, and The Kelly File on Fox news, the key word is apparent. While women host these shows and others, the clear majority are co-hosted by a man, or hosted by men alone. While Kelly File ranks high within Fox News, The O’Reiley Factor and Hannity generally overshadow it. This does not mean that she never outscores them, because there are times when she does. The male characters are often described as the hero with strong masculine traits while the female characters are portrayed as the damsel in distress. Throughout the years fairytales have been casting the same stereotypes for their characters. I’ve never been one to believe that the entirety of one’s personality relies solely on certain traits or associations. However, stereotypes exist for a reason. While generalisations are often destructive, they must be rooted in some sort of truth. After all, a particular observation must have been made many times for most sweeping statements to become embedded in one’s thought processes. Children learn at a very early age what it means to be a boy or a girl in our society. As children grow and develop, the gender stereotypes they are exposed to at home are reinforced by many elements in their environment and are thus perpetuated throughout childhood followed by adolescence. One major societal issue uprising with the way children are raised in today’s society is the gender specific dressing for boys and girls. The history with gender specific dressing is a one sided masculine enforced point of view for centuries. As children move through childhood and into adolescence, they are exposed to many factors which influence their behaviors and attitudes regarding gender roles. It is difficult for a child in today’s society to grow to adulthood without experiencing some form of gender bias or stereotyping. The question lies whether the view of gender specific dressing shall change or stay the same. As society continues to evolve and grow so does the tolerance of new uprising views for the general purpose of equality and freedom to do as pleased. How women are perceived by others, and how women perceive themselves, impacts their leadership roles in the work place. Stereotypes and gender biases are themes women have been dealing with for centuries. How women are perceived by social medial and television have been influencing how they are treated by men, and how they view themselves when it comes to taking a leadership role in their organization. According to Omega Institute (2012), “The rapidly shifting landscape of new media and technology, including reality television and celebrity culture, continue to reinforce gender stereotypes” (p. 1). This leads to men still growing up viewing women as home makers versus bread winner. With more women entering leadership roles in the work place they lack the respect from men due to how these men have grown up to know the typical role of a man and woman. Men tend to feel belittled due to the gender stereotypes seen on television, and this leads to women struggling to succeed as a leader with the lack of support from their male counterparts. Lack of confidence with women in the workplace is also influenced and effected by how women are perceived in social media and television.
