Development of gender stereotypes in children at home and school There are a lot of parents and teachers who communicate gender stereotypes to children while they interact. We also see how parents interact with boys and girls differently based on their gender. For example, some parents want their children to know that anything with pink is for girls, and blue is for boys. They observe what their parents can do at home, how and in what level their parents communicate to each other, what kind of activities/jobs their parents do the most, and what they expect from their children. The reasons they are behaving this way because children are observing their parents at home. They see that some of their fathers are working outside and seems to spend more time outside of home. Compared to mothers, who mostly working at home even after their actual jobs which they call it second shifts. Mothers also tend to visit neighbors’ and relatives’ houses but fathers sometimes have less interest in getting together. Their third topic was aggressive behavior gender stereotypes. Children start certain behaviors when they are in preschool. E. R. Baker at al. explains, children at their preschool age seem to hit each other, taking away toys, and use verbal or nonverbal assault. They usually learn these types of behaviors from their peers and or parents. Finally, on their last topic was prosocial behaviors. According to the article, adults expect their children to behave nicely, sharing, and helping others. But in contrast, most girls are more likely to face these conflicts than boys. Altogether, after collecting the information, researchers found out that boys/men are less likely to believe in stereotypes. They believe that both men and women can hold any occupation. They can also be involved in activities, be aggressive, and learn prosocial behaviors. Girls/women seem to believe that girls cannot be equal as boys.
