General Zaroff is an intelligent as well as insensitive hunter, who has no real ambition in life except to hunt. Yet, he has defeated all prey and now he doesn't know what to do next. He changes into a two-faced savage once he finds the “the ideal quarry ... It must have courage, cunning, and, above all, it must be able to reason”, keeping him occupied for as long as he wishes. You would think he is a “cold-blooded murderer, considering his life's purpose was to pursue humans, yet some points go against that. In mid-conversation with Rainsford after his arrival, Zaroff stresses, “I always got my quarry. Always. There is no greater bore than perfection.” Zaroff's realization on this fact caused him to seek quarry that could keep him occupied.
He is another example that the quote, "You are most yourself when you're alone." does not apply to him. Throughout all of the story, he is shown as honorable, and cunning. All throughout the story, even when he could have died or killed another, Zaroff keeps his hunter prowess and honor. "Rainsford," called the general, "if you are within sound of my voice, as I suppose you are, let me congratulate you. Not many men know how to make a Malay mancatcher. Luckily for me I, too, have hunted in Malacca. You are proving interesting, Mr. Rainsford. I am going now to have my wound dressed; it's only a slight one. But I shall be back. I shall be back." this shows us that Zaroff, even in the face of death, will still honor the person trying to kill
General Zaroff implies when talking with Rainsford that he stocks the island with the prey he hunts by setting up a ship trap (Connell 25-26). Later on General Zaroff reveals that he hunts humans in a game he made where he gives them necessities and a three hours head start with a three day limit (27-28). Ships get tricked by a light he made that indicates a channel when there is actually a large wall of sharp rocks that crush anything in its path. Then General Zaroff captures the survivors, puts them in his training school and gives them the choice to be hunted to maybe survive or be killed by his servant, Ivan. These passages show that General Zaroff is a brutal killer, who murders dozens of humans by trapping their ships. Regarding this, General Zaroff is indeed the most interesting villain in The Most Interesting
General Zaroff is becoming like an animal because he is beginning to look and act like an animal. When Rainsford was swept on the island he met a man that seemed normal but the more time that he spent there the more he realised that there was something off about him. His eyes ,too, were black and very bright(Connell,pg.4). Zaroff's eyes are becoming less human like and more animal like because he is becoming more dangerous. Zaroff may have done something to his eyes that would intimidate whatever he is hunting. Rainsford asked General Zaroff where him and his servant are from. “He is a Cossack,” said the general, and his smile showed red lips and pointed teeth(pg.4). Zaroff looks like what a dangerous animal would look like after eating their
General Zaroff: A Beast General Zaroff is a rather uncivilized man, although he does have expensive cultured tastes. General Zaroff shows his lack of civility repeatedly through the story, particularly when he tells Rainsford about this new game he has developed where he hunts other humans. After Rainsford is taken into the great chateau that Zaroff lives in, Rainsford is soon told about the new form of hunting he has developed. Zaroff describes the human as an animal, saying that, “It must have courage, cunning, and, above all, it must be able to reason” (25). But to Zaroff’s dismay, Rainsford responds with a horrified, “what you’re speaking of is murder” (26).
I believe that rainsford should not be convicted of General Zaroff death. Rainsford was in a ship reck. As he was swimming in the ocean he seen an island. As he swam to the island he heard a gun shot as if someone was on the island. When he got there he seen a big house, so he knocked on the door and Ivan general Zaroff assistant answered the door and that's when General Zaroff was there standing. General Zaroff is a hunter and refugee who hunts men.
In “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell, General Zaroff is shown as insane, cruel, and arrogant.Zaroff is shown to be insane in the story when he says that he kills humans for fun.“...Did not make me a coldone, cold-blooded murderer.” (Connell 70). This quote shows that Zaroff is psycho because during this part, it is showing that he is a murderer. During the story, Zaroff is also cruel. He shows that he is cruel when He says that he almost makes boats crash into rocks.“Where there’s none: giant rocks with razor edges crouch like a sea monster with wide-open jaws. They can crush a ship as easily as I can crush this nut.”(Connell 70). Zaroff shows that he is mean during this scene because he is making people crash, then giving them hope when
When they start to talk about hunting later, Zaroff talks about how he used to hunt since he was five, and then joined the army years later, hunting more animals as the years went by, until they became too easy for him. Zaroff then talks about an ideal animal, saying, “I wanted the ideal animal to hunt. So i said, what are the attributes to an ideal quarry? and the answer was of course, it must have courage, cunning, and, above all, it must be able to reason,” (8). Another is Zaroff mainly hunts for the wrong reason. When Zaroff has been hunting for most of his life, animals became less of a challenge for him, and decided to hunt for humans. Rainsford, who has also been hunting for a long time, was doing so to publish books and tell stories of what he’s done. Later on while they talk about hunting the next day, while Rainsford accused Zaroff for murder, Zaroff is endangering basically innocent sailors, and explains, “Sometimes and angry god of the high seas sends them to me.” When he turned on the lights to show Rainsford, he explains, “They indicate a channel, where there’s none; giant rocks with razor edges crouch like a sea monster with wide-open jaws. They have crush a ship as easily as crush this nut,” (9). So he uses a machine which no one could see, then crush the ship to bring them on to the
He is the one who will be hunting Rainsford for 3 days until one, he finds and kills him or two does not find him and let’s him go safely. One of the most popular quotes Zaroff ever says is, “God makes some men poets. Some he makes kings, some beggars. Me He made a hunter. My hand was made for the trigger my father said… My whole life has been one prolonged hunt” (17). This was so significant because maybe this was why Zaroff was the way he was, did his father teach him to hunt people? Well if his father did, he definitely did not teach his son to lose, but will this be his first
He is a philosopher and shares his view of the world with others; “Life is for the strong, to be lived by the strong and, if needs to be, taken by the strong.” He imposes his ideology of how the world works. Zaroff looks positively on the cruel and foul acts he committed with reasoning: “I assure you, I do not do the things you suggest… I treat these visitors with every consideration…” He justifies his acts and tries to convince Rainsford that he is right. He makes it sound like he is not setting his victims to their deaths and that it is all fun and games. However he puts it, Zaroff is still an evil yet ingenious mass
Firstly, Rainsford and Zaroff differ in their personal hunting styles or in what they hunt. In fact, Zaroff hunts people. Rainsford once said to Zaroff “Hunting? Good God, General Zaroff, what you speak of is murder” (Connell 64). This shows that Rainsford is proving to the audience that Zaroff is a murderer not a hunter.
Even through Zaroff hunted, him later, Zaroff also treated Rainsford as if he was an equal because Rainsford was on his “level”. This made Zaroff more like a gentleman. Another reason why Zaroff is a gentleman is that he gave Rainsford a heads up that he uses hounds for the hunt, and he gave Rainsford a hunting knife, moccasins and a supply of food. He also inform Rainsford that he will bring him back to the mainland if he lasted into the third night. Another reason why Zaroff is a gentleman is he gave Rainsford an option if he wanted to participate in the game, what I mean by this is that Zaroff inform Rainsford if he does not wish to hunt, he could play Ivan’s ideas of sport (which is probably the worst) I knew Zaroff gave Rainsford a choice because in the text Zaroff said “the choice rests entirely with you” (he was referring to Rainsford). These are my reasons on why Zaroff is a
General Zaroff’s cool headedness adds to the various textual evidence that he is not, in fact, insane. When he is introduced to the story, he praises Rainsford's hunting ability with a seemed preparedness. Rainsford observes that the General seems to read his mind at times. He is prepared for every question that Rainsford has, and even answers some that were never asked. His actions seem calculated to make Rainsford more comfortable with him, however, as a fellow hunter, Rainsford observes, “whenever he looked up from his plate he found the general studying him, appraising him narrowly.” This makes Rainsford uncomfortable, sets him on edge for the information that Zaroff is about to reveal. During the hunt, Zaroff
Zaroff is purely unconscious, and has no compassion or remorse for his actions. His demented mind forces him to believe that it is moral to hunt all living creatures, when in reality he is actually murdering a human soul. The general is sadistic as well as arrogant. He is mentally unstable, insane, and he denies the fact that he is committing something as bad as what he is doing. According to General Zaroff, hunting for him has been consumed by boredom and he no longer sees hunting as a challenge. Consequently, he chooses to hunt a certain “creature” with a higher mental stability of the creatures he has hunted before.(Connell 21) As Zaroff became comfortable with Rainsford, he
In the story Zaroff thinks it's not a problem if he kills the innocent people for fun. This mindset of his is openly showing signs of being a protagonist and going to do evil things throughout the story. In his conversation with Rainsford he clearly states that, "Life is for the strong, to be lived by the strong,, andif needs be, taken by the strong.” He states that he should be aloud to kill just because in his mind only the strong people in the world have the will to live. When Zaroff says "Thank you, I'm a hunter, not a murderer." Also states that he thinks that he's not a murderer he's simply a hunter. Which means in his way of thinking or the way he looks at it what he's doing is not wrong he's hunting them, trying to figure out whose strong and who is not. He decides to hunt humans because he says there the only match for him no other animal is enjoyable for him to hunt. He has the sense of superiority that humans were the only thing left. Zaroff then states “The weak of the world were put here to give the strong pleasure.” He thinks his actions are justifiable and that that's what the weak people are here for to give the more stronger and equip people pleasure. Zaroff then says “I am strong. Why should I not use my gift? If I wish to hunt, why should I not?” In his mind since he is a good strong hunter why should not he be able to hunt he calls this a gift and takes a lot of pride in it. This is another statement he says showing he thinks what he is doing is good, eliminating what he says “scum of the earth” so the strong are the ones to live.
General Zaroff states, “ Be a realist. The world is made up of two classes- the hunters and the huntees. Luckily, you and I are hunters.” ( pg 49) In this quote General Zaroff doesn’t think of hunting as a sport but as a correlation straight to real life. The quote shows that General Zaroff has an incredibly disgusting way of looking at life and everybody in it. General Zaroff’s insanity is shown because he think of everything besides himself as huntees and this shows he is a murderer. “ I hunt the scum of the earth- sailors from tramp ships, lascars, blacks, chinese, and mongrels.”( pg 49) This quote is saying that General Zaroff thinks that murder is a game, and he doesn’t feel bad about killing anyone of his hunts. This tells us that hunting/killing humans is a normal hobby for him and he does it often. The quote shows that General Zaroff’s mind is unstable and his thoughts are very distasteful. “ This is why I use them. It gives me pleasure. They can reason, after a fashion.” ( pg 50) General Zaroff is basically saying that he likes using humans for the hunt because it gives him pleasure. He is unbothered at the fact he is taking a human life away for a exhilarating game. When he says killing people because it brings him pleasure since they try to reason with him, but he puts himself in a position where he looks insane and murderous. It shows General Zaroff’s insane way of thinking and his thoughts on
