General Zaroff In The Most Dangerous Game By Richard Connell

In reality, some people stand out, some people do not. Whether or not they are noticed, everyone is wrapped in many different layers of personalities. People have their own secrets and hobbies. Not all of their personal activities are socially accepted and most people have their pastime in a secluded area. General Zaroff from “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell is an excellent example. He is a dynamic and complex antagonist that dabbles in more than an unusual game. Mr. Zaroff, the agile and experienced hunter, is cunning, well-educated yet inhumane and irrational. General Zaroff is brutal and inhumane mainly due to his abnormal version of hunting. For him, it is less like hunting and more like a tropical murder spree; “Hunting? Great Guns, Zaroff, what you speak of is murder!” (Page 6) as claimed by Rainsford when Zaroff explained his “game”. So, General Zaroff kills humans for sport and entertainment. He is willing to slaughter everyone with no discrimination and regardless of their race; “…I hunt the scum of the Earth: sailors from tramp ships – lassars, blacks, Chinese, whites, mongrels…” (Page 7) He is like Eminem because he is not racist since he hates everyone and wants to kill everyone. He is a philosopher and shares his view of the world with others; “Life is for the strong, to be lived by the strong and, if needs to be, taken by the strong.” He imposes his ideology of how the world works. Zaroff looks positively on the cruel and foul acts he committed with reasoning: “I assure you, I do not do the things you suggest… I treat these visitors with every consideration…” He justifies his acts and tries to convince Rainsford that he is right. He makes it sound like he is not setting his victims to their deaths and that it is all fun and games. However he puts it, Zaroff is still an evil yet ingenious mass
