Generation Gap

There are currently six living generations in the United States, each with different characteristics, beliefs, and values. The things that define each generation’s culture are derived from their history, upbringing, and the lifestyle of their time. Our generation was born between 1980 and 2000. We are called Millennials. More specifically, we grew up in the South, which typically lends itself to being more conservative and religious. These characteristics, along with our instant gratification attitude, define who we are, what we believe, and how we view other generations. For example, we might have differing views with the Silent Generation. Some Millennials may feel the Silent Generation’s social, religious, and economic conservatism is outdated.

A generation can be defined as the period, cohort or age of a group of people. Age is seen as the age that the persons were when particular transitions or events in life take place. Period can be defined as the overall experience of a person’s lifetime. Lastly, cohort can be seen as the overall grouping of people who have shared events during their formative years that more than likely contribute to like-minded behavior throughout the duration of their lives. There are currently four generations in United States society: Silent Generation, Baby Boomers, Generation X and The Millennials. The silent generation was born between the years of 1930 and 1945. Significant events during this time period include but are not limited to World War II and the Great Depression. The baby boomer generation was born between the years of 1946 and 1964. Significant events for this generation include the substantial growth of the middle class as well as economic prosperity. Generation X is born in the time period of 1965-1979, this generation was brought together by the big energy issue as well as the Vietnam War. Lastly the final generation that is currently in the workforce are the Millennials. This generation was born between the years 1980 and 2001, this group is brought together by the 9/11 terrorist attacks as well as the internet

The term generation means all people born and living around the same time, regarded collectively. But even though that is the meaning of generation people think that generation means something else. For example, I have read an essay that explains what generations are, and I have seen a presentation where it says the total opposite of what the essay says. In March 8, 2000, Arlie Russell Hochschild wrote Coming of Age, Seeking an Identity, where she explained that generations are a group of people who feel the impact of a powerful historical event and developed a consciousness about it. While in March 19, 2016 Adam Conover did a presentation on generation where he says that “generations do not exist.”

It is no surprise that our world and the people in it constantly change as time passes by. With new lifestyles, morals, technology, and many other changes, looking back on other generations and how the people lived might seem unusual. Two generations now that are living at the same time are the Baby Boomers and the Millennials. The Baby Boomers are people born from 1946 to 1964 in the post-World War II period. The Millennials are individuals born from 1977 to 2000. These dates are just approximate time periods of these generations because there are no precise years for these generations. Since each generation is born in different times it can cause issues on the features of the american life such as Social Security. As the United States government set up the Social Security program in 1937, it has been very aged since then. At that time, the Social Security system was able to pay its retirees a five hundred yield on the money they contributed. The Social Security program now, in todays time, is not able to say the same for itself. As time progresses onwards, the rift between generations seems to widen. Today, an emphasis is often placed on the defining differences between the younger and older generations.

We are living in a world of change, how kids live their life today isn’t like how their parents lived their lives 20 years ago. Over time many things have changed from ways of communication to how a person lives their everyday lifestyle. Even how these generations approach education is different. However, with that said just because there are many differences does not mean they’re are not many comparisons between the generations as well. Though we come from different generations we all are share similarities some of which you would never expect.

I see a younger generation such as “Net Gens” to use slang in certain friend groups. For example speaking to someone my age who is 20, I would use the term “sick” and people around my age would understand in a certain context it is viewed as a good thing meaning cool. Using that term with majority of people who are 40+ would view it as being sick rather than the other way. Another communication difference is revolving around technology. Many Baby Boomers and Gen X wouldn’t prefer texting or using social media apps comparing to Millennials and Net Gens. Millennials and Net Gens can easily communicate through the internet with social media, texting, or any form of communication that requires internet. The other two generations would probably call each other and won’t be too familiar with the internet. I see people stop having sex around the age of 47-60 years old. The nineteen fifties marked the era of differences between the parents and their children. Not until the nineteen sixties was there turning point in the nation. The generation gaps are the differences amongst the younger generation and their elders, and mainly amongst children and their parents. Generation gap still occurs today, in thing varying from behavior, to genres of music, and even in usage of language. The new generations try to express themselves as something different from the old, embracing new slang, trying to form a separation between themselves and the previous generation.

For example, I serve as a Board Member on a Home Owner Assocation (HOA). Last week I attended a Board Member conference on Community next: 2020 and beyond. Generation gap means difference in attitude, or lack of understanding between younger and older generation. This generation gap has always been there but these days it has reached to an explosive stage. The values and patterns of life have changed to a great extent. Today, everybody likes to live and behave in his own way. This attitude has widened the generation gap, which can never be filled. It is now destroying family life completely. The elders look after the children and make all sorts of sacrifices to bring them up. Naturally, they feel they have a right over them. They want their children to follow their instructions as they have certain expectations from them. But the children, when they grow up, want a complete freedom in their thoughts and actions and unfortunately their thoughts and actions are just opposite to those expected by the elders. They revolt when any kind of restrictions are imposed on them. Consequently, the family breaks up and everything gets ruined.
