Genesis: The Natural World

“The Lord saw that the wickedness of humankind was great in the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of their hearts was only evil continually. And the Lord was sorry that he had made humankind on the earth, and it grieved him to his heart. So the lord said, ‘I will blot out from the earth the human beings I have created-people together with animals and creeping things and birds of the air, for I am sorry that I have made them.’ But Noah found favor in the sight of the Lord.”(Genesis 6:5-8)

Along with providing information on the origins of the natural world, Genesis also provides insight into how the world was originally intended to function. After God was finished with his creative work, He declared that everything was “very good” (Genesis 1:31). At this point in time, all of creation was living in perfect harmony—until Adam and Eve sinned. After Adam and Eve gave into Satan’s temptation, sin entered the world and changed how the natural world functioned. Genesis chapters 3-11 show continuous examples of how sin infected the natural world. Animals had to be killed (Genesis 3:21 and 4:4), death entered the human race (as can be implied from Genesis

In Genesis one and two, it provides a full understanding of God’s creations and wisdom of human nature because it is free from evil. Human nature is revealed from Genesis one with God creating the Earth and the Heavens and creating the man of his likeness. The Bible explains how God created Adam, from dust and was placed in the Garden of Eden (Genesis 2:7). The Bible explains humanity was created to work and serve (Genesis 2:15). Subsequently, Eve was created; “God had created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him: male and female he created them” (Genesis 1:27). Adam and Eve would help God because He wanted them to multiply the Earth by taking care of all of his creation (Hiles & Smith, 2014). God is the sovereign ruler, he created humanity as how he should have wanted. The Bible explains about human nature that God created everything to be distinct from animals and all of His creation. God created us in his own image, which is why we all look different; we are unique in His eyes. Also, God created us to be good because we are born innocent of all evil and loving of God. In addition, we were all born pure as Adam and Eve were. The Bible explains that God was pleased with his creations, “God saw that it was good” (Genesis 1:10-21).

In “Genesis”, God has a fatherly relationship with the humans and as a result he chooses to bring a flood to destroy all of mankind for a specific reason. God chooses to kill all of humankind because they are noxious beings and need to be destroyed to rid the world of poisonous beings. “When the Lord saw that man had done much evil and that his thoughts and inclinations were always evil, he was sorry that he had made man on earth,”(6:5-7). Paul states in Romans 1:20 that Gods invisible attributes, eternal power, and divine nature are clearly understood by the visible things that God has made in this world. God’s redeemed, should show a concern for the care of nature. Nature suffers because it is a casualty of sin, not because it is naturally evil. Chapter 1 where verses 1-5 can be found tells that God created the heavens, the earth, and everything that lives. These verses explain that God was the first and only creator. However Genesis later describes a lot more about the creation of the earth. After verses 1-5 in chapter 1 we learn that God continues creating by making humankind in his image and also giving them charge over the earth. We also learn that after the first day of creation in verses 1-5, God continues creating for a total of seven days. After God initially created the earth and light, God on the second day created the sky. On the third day, dry land was created. The fourth day he created the sun, moon, and stars. On the fifth day he created every living creature. The sixth day he made animals and human beings in his own image to commune with them. On the last day God rested and blessed it making his creation holy. At the end of Genesis chapter 1 God had created everything and it was perfect. I think that verses 1-5 fit perfectly with the rest of the chapter because they give a good insight was to how the chapter will continue. They also are very consistent in that they don’t make any drastic changes in the later verses. Verses 1-5 also contribute to the rest of the chapter by setting a starting point for what would be happening and how God would be acting. Genesis starts by saying “in beginning God created the heavens and the earth”. The Bible talks about God speaking things into existence. First God made the light, which He separated into day and night. Next, God created the sky and then the waters. “He called the dry ground ‘land’ and the waters ‘seas’”. This is when God says that “it was good”. God states that his creations are good, which is different from the creations of Enuma Elish. The Creations of the gods in Enuma Elish were made from corpses torn apart and from the need of slaves. God created the vegetation, animals, sea creatures and the stars. On the sixth day, God created humans to reign over things in the world. After each day, God would state that his creations were good. After God created humans, he said it “was very good”. This would be shocking to the nomads because they would not have known of a god loving them before. Genesis is very realistic and accounts for everything that the nomads would know like the sea, animals and stars.

The cultures of diverse populations united them to form civilizations. The cultures made a unified religion, language, and technology. Most of the early civilizations had tribal beliefs, or other polytheistic religions, as the dominant religions. Monotheistic religion wouldn’t be introduced into the world until later. Languages formed amongst these civilizations in order to effectively communicate to each other.

The word genesis is the dawning of creation, and the biblical book of Genesis is the book that brings fourth the creation of our planet and the life that resides. Genesis also describes the descent of Adam and Eve and unveils the foundation that sin builds upon. Just like how a child becomes fascinated after hearing stories of their babyhood, or how a family is eager to discover their genealogy, the book of Genesis is a very intriguing story to many Christians because it depicts how mankind and the world around them were formed. Genesis 1-3 allow a base knowledge for understanding the rest of the bible because it portrays the way that God created the world – how it was supposed to be and why the world is the way it is today. After God spends six days working on creating his idea of a perfect world, it says “God saw all that he had made, and it was very good,” (Genesis 1:31). The book of Genesis is often referred to as the book of beginnings. Genesis is the first book that begins the Old Testament, it is also the first book of the entire Bible. The Lord also began the world in the book of Genesis, He made the heavens and the earth, man and woman. In Genesis chapters one through eleven, the Bible teaches us stories that most of us have grown up hearing in Sunday School such as the creation account, Adam and Eve, Cain and Abel, Noah and the flood and the tower of Babel. In this book of beginnings, we are shown some of Gods characteristics; we see that God is love and He showed His love by creating us and the world, on the other extreme, we also see the wrath of God. Through these teachings, we are able to see that God ultimately in control and holds everything in His balance. The stories of Genesis aren’t just stories; they are real life accounts that can help build and shape a worldview on things regarding the natural world, human identity, human relationships and civilization.

Genesis starts off with creation. God spoke into nothing and said, “ Let there be light” and there was light. God then created the sky, land, nature, animals, and humans. It was good until sin entered the world and corrupted it. Adam and Eve sinned against God and here was the start of man’s sinful downfall. Adam and Eve had two sons Cain and Abel. Cain was jealous of God’s favor towards Abel’s sacrifice, and so he killed Abel. Cain’s ungodliness leads to a flood that was supposed to destroy man kind except for one family. God chose Noah and faithful righteous man to build an ark big enough for his family and a pair of every kind of animal to survive. God continues his plan of salvation with Noah’s family and decedents. Noah’s son Ham lead to the start of another sinful downfall. The time of the Tower of Babel came along, and a group of men wanted to build a tower tall enough to reach the heavens. God was angry, so sent confusion to the men by giving them different languages causing them to separate. God begins once again with a chosen man named Abraham. God told him to be faithful, and that he would be blessed with many descendants. Abraham wasn't patient with God and wanted to do things his own way. In Old Testament, Genesis is considered as history of the earth and human creation. Only from very first few chapters, we can notice that “God [with the power of His voice] created the heavens and the earth” (Gen 1:1). He created everything on six literal days, including universe, nature, night, day, animal, and human beings. God showed us how to conduct our weeks as working six days per week, but then He gave us one day, the seventh day, to rest. In other words, after productively working on six successive days, we should spend Sunday to go to church, to hang out with our beloved ones and to glorify the Great I Am. Beyond that, it is such a bless that “God created man in his own image” (Gen 1:27), which also means that He is not distant from His creation. Therefore, we should believe that we inherit some virtues from the Lord God, and He always gets involved in human lives. Applying those virtues in behaviors will help us grow good relationships with other people. Undoubtedly, relationships are life’s biggest joys and biggest sorrows. There are various types of relationships including a superior one, the relationship with God. The very first relationship mentioned in the Bible was the marriage of Adam and Eve. They first lived happily together in the garden until the sin came. However, when God asked, neither of them admitted it. Another broken relationship mentioned in the Bible was between Cain and Abel, the two
