OBESITY Obesity is a disorder that involves an excessive amount of body fat that increases the risk of diseases and health problems such as heart disease, diabetes, and high blood pressure. (Mayo Clinic) Obesity is one of the number one causes of premature death in the United States and kills nearly 300,000 Americans a year. (Obesity Society) There are many causes for obesity including inactivity, unhealthy diet and eating habits, genetics, hormonal changes, certain medications, and other medical problems. There are also many ways that obesity can be treated including exercising, diet, weight-loss medication, weight-loss surgery, and behavior change. (Mayo Clinic) Most people will work with certified doctors and nutritionist to help …show more content…
Genes are what gives the body its’ instructions on responding to changes in its environment. Recent brain images find that individuals that are at risk for obesity show relatively greater activation in the brain’s reward centers in general. Studies show that they have heightened responses to images of food and poorer impulse control. (Adolescence Page 45) (Batterink, Yokum, & Stice, 2010.) Genes can cause obesity in disorders like Bardet-Biedi syndrom and Prader-Willi syndrome. (CDC Obesity, Causes and Consequences) Obesity is shown to be in larger amounts in Black women, poor families, Latinos, and Native Americans. (Adolescence page 46) (Burdette & Needham, 2012) One hypothesis is the “ thrift genotype” hypothesis which states that our ancestors are said to have different genotype that helped them survive famines, where today food is everywhere and our bodies do not have to suffer. (CDC Obesity Genomics and Health) The actual research on genetic variation that affects response to change a persons diet and their physical activity is still at an very early stage. Nobody can change their genes, but everyone is able to change the way that they eat and their physical activity to help improve the health of themselves along with the health of their …show more content…
Hormones are chemical messengers that their job is to regulate processes in our bodies. Such hormones as leptin, growth hormone, sex hormone, and insulin are all hormones that have influence on our metabolism, appetite, and our body fat distribution. Leptin is the hormone that is responsible to reduce a person’s appetite by acting on the right spots on the brain to lower the need to eat. This hormone also is the manager of controlling where the body stores fat. Leptin levels are higher in obese people. Another hormone that is produced in the pancreas is insulin and it is important to regulate carbs and the metabolism of fat. (better health, obesity and hormones) Obese people have issues with their insulin where the signals are just lost and their tissues cannot control their glucose levels. This of course leads to type II diabetes. (better health, obesity and hormones) The growth hormone is produced in the pituitary gland. This hormone influences the height of a person and helps build muscle and bone. The growth hormone affects metabolism also. People that are obese have lower levels of the growth hormone in their body than people who are normal weight. Sex hormones, such as estrogen and androgens, are also hormones that play a role in obesity. Studies have shown that a lack of estrogen leads to excessive weight gain. (Better Health, Obesity) Hormone levels are encouraged to be checked for people whom
Obesity is defined as defined as abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that may impair health. Obesity is not only based on an individual’s weight but also their BMI. A BMI greater than or equal to 25 is overweight. A BMI greater than or equal to 30 is obesity ((Organization, 2013). Obesity is the most common preventable deaths and the fifths leading health risk globally. Obesity has also been linked to other debilitating diseases and can increase a person’s chances of being hospitalized. Obesity-related conditions include heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and certain types of cancer, some of the leading causes of preventable death (cdc.gov, 2014).
Genes control almost every aspect of human life, and when it comes to weight there is no exception. Little is known, however, how much of an individual’s genes actually control the weight of certain individuals. Body fat can vary from person to person, yet some people have always carried more weight than others. Often times, when one person is overweight in the family, most of the other individuals in the same family are overweight as well. However, more than just genetics can go into being overweight, and a person’s genes are not the end all be all of obesity. Many times the environment surrounding people who are obese contributes to the overall weight of the individual, and when obesity promoting genes are mixed
Obesity is a condition where an individual’s weight is disproportionate to their height. There are many factors
Obesity is a common disease that makes a person massively overweight. This disease can potentially be lethal if not treated correctly. In addition, this could also lead to other common diseases such as heart disease and diabetes and cancer..
Obesity is a medical condition in which excess fats have grown and accumulated to the point of harm, and a shortened life expectancy. Obesity is a problem that has been more prominent in the 20th and 21st century and is now a main concern for both society and the government. It is the citizen’s duty to resolve this epidemic known as obesity in the United States.
Obesity is a medical condition. It occurs when energy doesn’t get used and is stored as fat to be burned through exercise. There is 2 major reasons why you may be obese. 1. You don’t exercise or you lack on exercising. 2. You consume junk food (the food that has lots of sugar, high in saturated fat or food that has chemicals implemented on them. Food these days are so processed that, after we eat the food we start to get hungry faster then normal.
For people all over the world, obesity has reached an all time high and will only continue to climb. Obesity is the accumulation of excessive body fat on an individual that increases the chance of developing health complications. Obesity is a health condition that can cause much damage to an individuals mind and body, and has become linked to a shortened life span. It has caused an increase in blood pressure, strokes, high cholesterol, high blood sugar and heart disease. It has cause
Just what is obesity? Obesity is defined as having an excessive amount of body fat. Obesity occurs when a person’s weight is far above their ideal body weight. The root cause of obesity is widely debated. An inactive lifestyle, environment, genetics, family history, health conditions, medicines, emotional factors, age, pregnancy, and lack of sleep are many factors that can contribute towards obesity. Many times we can find multiple overlaying factors, for example, we may see a family history of obesity, along with an inactive lifestyle all while in an environment that reinforces overindulgence.
Obesity has become the silent killer in American society. It is a risk factor for numerous chronic diseases including the four leading causes of death. Obesity can be linked to stroke, heart disease, cancer and diabetes, all serious health problems that can be fatal. Obesity is linked to 300,000 deaths annually in the industrial world (Flamholz, 2001). Often in society and in the medical community there exists a lack of understanding that obesity is in fact a disease and needs attention, otherwise the rates of many diseases will continue to climb.
Obesity basically means having too much body fat. Not being overweight for your height, having too much muscle, or water in your body. What exactly is obesity? “Obesity is a condition that is associated with having an excess of body fat, defined by genetic and environmental factors that are difficult to control when dieting. Obesity is classified as having a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 or greater. BMI is a tool used to measure obesity. Obesity increases your risk of developing related conditions such as diabetes, hypertension and sleep apnea, to name a few. Many individuals are affected by obesity and are not aware of it” (O.A.C, 2016). Causes of obesity vary from person to person, but most are from the same reasons. Taking in more calories than your body can burn leads to obesity because your body stores the unused calories as fat. Typical causes are eating too much food than your body can use, drinking too much alcohol, and not getting enough exercise. Many obese people who lose large amounts of weight and gain it back think it is their fault. They blame themselves for not having the willpower to keep the weight off. Many people regain more weight than they lost. Today, we know that biology is a big reason why some people cannot keep the weight off. Some people who live in the same place and eat the same foods become obese, while others do not. Our bodies have a complex system to help keep our
The gene in the article is a gene that causes obesity. The gene affects people by adding seven pounds onto their body. The exercises kids should do is something that makes them sweat. For example, they should jump rope or swim, to keep in shape. The amount of time is one hour for teenagers. However for adults it is 3-4 hours per day.The obesity gene can be offset if we all exercise for an hour or more a
Attention Step: How many of you all know of someone who is overweight? How many of you all know of someone who is dead because of weight problems? Obviously, a serious factor that is going on across the United States is obesity. According to The Gale Encyclopedia of Fitness written by the authors Rosalyn Carson-DeWitt and William Atkins, the definition of obesity means that it is a health condition where an excessive amount of body fat is inside the human body. This excessive body fat can cause health related issues including illness, disability, and worst of all, death (Carson-DeWitt and Atkins 615).
Hello Judith, you make a great point on how obesity has known to be hereditary. I was not aware that when one has the obesity gene they may have more problem trying to lose weight due to problem at the biological level. I too agree with you statement how many of these children suffer from a physiological stand point. Promoting health from an early age can be the best way to prevent
Obesity refers to the condition of having an extra amount of body fat. Obesity is caused by eating too much and moving too little. When an individual’s amount of body fat becomes too high, they are at a greater risk of being affected with life changing diseases such as heart failure, hypertension, type II diabetes, cancer, gallbladder disease, osteoarthritis, and others. This shows that people should become more physically active and attempt to make healthier choices because their life depends on the decisions, they make.
Two thirds of American adults are obese or overweight. Obesity is a silent killer that is taking over the United States slowly but surely. People do not typically realize how serious obesity is and it gets joked about, humiliating those who are affected. Obesity is not a joke, it is a disease that is killing everyone’s family, friends and neighbors. Obesity alone is detrimental to the health of an individual, it causes many adverse effects to the body that are often difficult to repair or cure.
