Genetically Modified Organisms are harmful to the overall health of the United States and is an area of concern that warrants more attention. Natural News GMO Corn There are many issues that face Americans today and need to be addressed, though some that are more pressing in nature. One of which is of great concern being the large presence of GMOs in our daily diets,. In the rush to produce more food cheaper and make it resistant to disease and pest, we may have opened ourselves to unknowns. We have health issues in the United States that are not nearly so prevalent elsewhere in the world (Séralini). We have bee’s dying at alarming rates (Amos). Both are linked to the existence of GMOs, it begs the needs to ask ourselves then I think, …show more content…
As GMOs are a fairly new invention in the scope of things and we have no real idea of the long term health damage being caused we need to be vigilant. Many effects from GMOs are just now being realized, bees and other beneficial insects are dying at alarming rates because of exposure to GMO pollen.A study showed a clear link between GMO plants and the use of Round-up which in turn was shown to cause bees kidneys to fail (Amos). Yet in another rats were shown to develop tumors at very high rates and earlier than they would naturally when fed on GMO maize (Séralini).Though the study was retracted the researchers said it was only at the insistence of Monsanto and they stand by their findings (de Vendômois JS).We know that Genetically Modified Organisms are bad for the environment, for many reasons. For instance when organisms are injected with the DNA of another organism it reduces biodiversity, and thus we run the risk of extinction of the original plant organism. Also seeds from GMO crops like Monsanto’s canola mix with weeds which then become herbicide tolerant, and can smother out good crops. Not just plants but also animals also are in danger from genetic modification. Butterflies suffer from GMOS; they are doubly in danger from the terminator seed pollen and the herbicide laden plants. Bats also
Professor Richard Lewotin said “An ecosystem, you can always intervene and change something in it, but there is no way of knowing what all the downstream effects will be or how it will affect the environment.” Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) are not healthy and they shouldn’t be put in our food. Our nation does not know the full extent of GMOs. GMOs are used in almost all of our food, and for the most part there are no regulations for these GMOs that food companies are using now a days. They have been used for years without telling us the full background and side effects they could have. As a nation we need to take the right step in learning the facts about them and making our food truly healthy. GMOs should be made illegal due to the fact that studies have shown them to be unsafe and harmful to consume.
These concerns are about the potential of illnesses GMOs could cause. An article observes, “In the 20-plus years on the market, GMOs have not caused or contributed to a single illness or death” (“GMO Myths Vs. Facts”). There have not been any traces of illnesses after multiple testing of GMO products. Since there are only ten commercially farmed genetically modified crops in the United States, the possibility of people getting a disease from them is rare; especially because three of the crops are mainly for feeding livestock. People have believed multiple problems are linked to GMOs. For instance, “in 2013, the journal food and chemical toxicology retracted a paper linked to herbicide roundup and round up-tolerant GM corn to cancer and premature death in rats… they found researchers had used too few rats… and the results were inconclusive” (Colbert, par. 16). Since the researchers did not have enough evidence, the possibility of the problem being GMOs are
Primarily, genetically engineered crops result in countless long-term, detrimental impacts on the environment. As the United States becomes increasingly dependent on such crops for a majority of its food supply, these harmful environmental impacts are becoming evident. Many GMO crops are modified to be herbicide-resistant, such as the Roundup Ready crop, which allows farmers to spray herbicides without causing damage to the plants. While the ridding of weeds increases the level of production for these farmers, their total elimination greatly interferes with the natural interdependency of the ecosystem. One impacted species includes the Monarch butterfly, as its population decline has been directly linked to the use of genetically engineered crops. The weeds being eliminated include the
Eveyone of us and our children are affected by the use of GMO food products and they have a dangerous side effect on our enviroment that in some cases will never be repaired.
When it comes to the topic of whether genetic modification are safe or unsafe for the animals, the environment and for human consumption, some of us will readily agree that they are in fact very dangerous for everyone. Where this agreement usually ends, however, is on the question of how exactly they affect everyone. Whereas some are convinced that GMOs are not safe for anyone, others maintain that they are not a hazard to anyone. I agree that GMOs are not safe because while doing my research I found concrete evidence that proves that they are unsafe for consumption. All production of GMOs should be discontinued immediately since they are a danger for our environment and for ourselves.
Genetically modified organisms is a topic that has been hotly debated for many years; stemming from the central question of the future legality of GMOs, the question rages whether GMOs are the key to alleviating several of the world’s struggles or if they are too riddled with dangerous ramifications. Advocates argue GMOs offer positive health effects. Additionally, they insist GMOs offer improved crop yield; nevertheless, opponents claim GMOs cause adverse health effects like increases in allergic reactions. Similarly, opponents maintain GMOs harm the environment through increased dependence on the use of herbicides. Some experts argue
Most concerns with respect to GMOs have been due to their effects on human health and the environment. Some of the possible health concerns to humans include organ failure and birth defects. Based on tests carried out on rats, it has been shown that organs such as kidneys, liver and the heart may fail due to GMO consumption. Research has also shown that pregnant women are also at the risk of experiencing birth defects due to GMO consumption. On the environment, GMOs have resulted into weed resistance whereby they cannot be destroyed by the normal pesticides. In United States for instance, it has been reported that nine species of weeds have evolved to become resistant. GMOs have also been reported to persist in waterways. Researchers have been able to show that while pollen or leaves find their way to streams, these chemicals persist in waterways (Cavdar & Aydin, 2015).
GMOs can cross pollinate and their seeds can travel and become intertwined into anyones garden. It is impossible to fully stop and end the use of GMOs now. Self-propagating GMO pollution will outlast and be a problem long after the effects of any global warming problem or nuclear waste damage. The potential impact is beyond comprehension, threatening the health of all future generations to come. GMO contamination has also caused many economic losses for specifically organic and/or non-GMO farmers who now often have to struggle just to keep their crops pure and non-GMO.
Genetically modified organisms(GMO) is one of the most important issues around the world. GMOs are Organisms who are altered for product quality and improvement quality. Through the years GMOs have raised concerns on their beneficial attributes such as their resistance to disease, higher product yield, and improved nutrition. These concerns led GMO being worldwide how due to the negative effects GMOs have on health and the environment. However, the U.S. government actively uses GMO and does not understand the consequences of this product. To address this I do not actively support the government use of GMO because, it is linked to sickness of many people, and it severely harms the environment.
Genetic Engineering has been around for thousands of years, but testing on increased usage of Genetic Modification may be required to satisfy concerns over how GM crops affect humans and the environment. Some of these concerns include, but are not limited to, potential toxicity, allergenicity, and possible gene transfer to humans or genetic out crossing to other organisms. Yet, crops are grown easier on an unprecedented scale, can have a higher nutritional value, and novel organisms that are resistant to disease are being made available on the market thanks to Genetic Modification. Genetic Modification should not be banned because of the endless opportunities it gives to us despite the insubstantial negative effects it may have on the environment.
Genetically modified foods are a very dangerous and wasteful process that is given too much thought. This includes allergic reactions to possible intestinal damage, many people want to avoid genetically modified foods because of animal studies that have shown changes in internal cell formation, unusual tumor development, and unanticipated passing of life that have occurred, as well as altered the number of cells that regulated the immune system for the body. Research has shown that a growth in genetically modified foods has raised allergic reactions in the population. If someone is allergic to a genetically modified crop, then for example, if a cow eats that genetically modified crop, there is a high risk of the person getting an allergic reaction from eating the cow meat. The safety of genetically modified foods is not verified yet, we are the lab rats to test the safety of them, which cause great risks and potential threats on human health. There has been no thorough research done on the current genetically modified foods..
Did you know that we have eaten genetically modified foods for the past 30 years? It’s in about 70-85% of our American food. Genetically modified foods are any organism produced from genetic engineering techniques that allow the transfer of functional genes from one organism to another, including from one species to another. Giant national companies are distributing out large numbers of genetically modified foods into our nutrition. Genetic manipulations can result in unanticipated harmful effects, and because genetically engineered foods are not tested sufficiently, this experiment not only jeopardizes the health of people, but could also lead to global food shortages and extensive ecological hazards. Due to genetically modified food unique and unknown nature, there are potential for adverse health side effects such as diabetes, cancer,
Most existing genetically modified crops have been developed to improve yield, through the introduction of resistance to plant diseases or of increased tolerance of herbicides. Currently available GM foods stem mostly from plants, but in the future foods derived from GM microorganisms or GM animals are likely to be introduced on the market. GMOs are the source of genetically modified foods, and are also widely used in scientific research and to produce goods other than food. Currently available GM foods stem mostly from plants, but in the future foods derived from GM microorganisms or GM animals are likely to be introduced on the market. Most of the concern surrounding GMO’s relates to their potential for negative effects on the environment and human health. are genetically modified plants (FDA website). As a result of these risks, many people in the United States, Canada, Europe, Japan, and other nations are demanding non-genetically modified (non-GMO) foods.
In the last two decades genetically modified organisms (GMO) have radically transformed the food and farming industry. With the use of constant animal testing and lab conducted research, scientists have yet to breach the exact effects of what gene manipulations actually are especially in a long term sense. With GMO manufacturing companies, such as Monsanto, marketing the use of GMO to be a groundbreaking, healthy and practical food developing source, eyes have been turned away from many of the negative components. Further research by third part companies has shown that there is evidence to believe disastrous effects are occurring concerning GMO and their adverse effects on both the environment and human health.
Genetically Modified Organisms have been plaguing the modern world for sometime now, causing people of all ages suffer and develop allergies to some of their favorite foods. All around the globe farmers have been using a new method of growing crops where they can grow more for less, but at what cost to the health of the customers. At first it wasn’t a well known problem but after years of deaths and illnesses research has shown that this has been caused by the drugs used to mass produce the food products us consumers place in our body. The list is endless covering the pros and cons of GMO’s, but the main few are the abundance of crops now produced throughout america and the crops are less susceptible to harm from bugs, harsh weather, and herbicide, and on the negative side GMO’s are affecting our health, long term and short term, harm the crops made at local farms surrounding GMO’s since the pollen and seed is carried through the air, and even possibly death.
