Genetically Modified Organisms Are Harmful For The Overall Health Of The United States

Professor Richard Lewotin said “An ecosystem, you can always intervene and change something in it, but there is no way of knowing what all the downstream effects will be or how it will affect the environment.” Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) are not healthy and they shouldn’t be put in our food. Our nation does not know the full extent of GMOs. GMOs are used in almost all of our food, and for the most part there are no regulations for these GMOs that food companies are using now a days. They have been used for years without telling us the full background and side effects they could have. As a nation we need to take the right step in learning the facts about them and making our food truly healthy. GMOs should be made illegal due to the fact that studies have shown them to be unsafe and harmful to consume.

These concerns are about the potential of illnesses GMOs could cause. An article observes, “In the 20-plus years on the market, GMOs have not caused or contributed to a single illness or death” (“GMO Myths Vs. Facts”). There have not been any traces of illnesses after multiple testing of GMO products. Since there are only ten commercially farmed genetically modified crops in the United States, the possibility of people getting a disease from them is rare; especially because three of the crops are mainly for feeding livestock. People have believed multiple problems are linked to GMOs. For instance, “in 2013, the journal food and chemical toxicology retracted a paper linked to herbicide roundup and round up-tolerant GM corn to cancer and premature death in rats… they found researchers had used too few rats… and the results were inconclusive” (Colbert, par. 16). Primarily, genetically engineered crops result in countless long-term, detrimental impacts on the environment. As the United States becomes increasingly dependent on such crops for a majority of its food supply, these harmful environmental impacts are becoming evident. When it comes to the topic of whether genetic modification are safe or unsafe for the animals, the environment and for human consumption, some of us will readily agree that they are in fact very dangerous for everyone. Where this agreement usually ends, however, is on the question of how exactly they affect everyone. Whereas some are convinced that GMOs are not safe for anyone, others maintain that they are not a hazard to anyone. I agree that GMOs are not safe because while doing my research I found concrete evidence that proves that they are unsafe for consumption. All production of GMOs should be discontinued immediately since they are a danger for our environment and for ourselves.

Most concerns with respect to GMOs have been due to their effects on human health and the environment. Some of the possible health concerns to humans include organ failure and birth defects. Based on tests carried out on rats, it has been shown that organs such as kidneys, liver and the heart may fail due to GMO consumption. Research has also shown that pregnant women are also at the risk of experiencing birth defects due to GMO consumption. On the environment, GMOs have resulted into weed resistance whereby they cannot be destroyed by the normal pesticides. In United States for instance, it has been reported that nine species of weeds have evolved to become resistant. GMOs have also been reported to persist in waterways. Researchers have been able to show that while pollen or leaves find their way to streams, these chemicals persist in waterways (Cavdar & Aydin, 2015).

GMOs can cross pollinate and their seeds can travel and become intertwined into anyones garden. It is impossible to fully stop and end the use of GMOs now. Self-propagating GMO pollution will outlast and be a problem long after the effects of any global warming problem or nuclear waste damage. The potential impact is beyond comprehension, threatening the health of all future generations to come. GMO contamination has also caused many economic losses for specifically organic and/or non-GMO farmers who now often have to struggle just to keep their crops pure and non-GMO.

Genetically modified organisms(GMO) is one of the most important issues around the world. GMOs are Organisms who are altered for product quality and improvement quality. Through the years GMOs have raised concerns on their beneficial attributes such as their resistance to disease, higher product yield, and improved nutrition. These concerns led GMO being worldwide how due to the negative effects GMOs have on health and the environment. However, the U.S. government actively uses GMO and does not understand the consequences of this product. To address this I do not actively support the government use of GMO because, it is linked to sickness of many people,and it severely harms the environment.

Genetic Engineering has been around for thousands of years, but testing on increased usage of Genetic Modification may be required to satisfy concerns over how GM crops affect humans and the environment. Some of these concerns include, but are not limited to, potential toxicity, allergenicity, and possible gene transfer to humans or genetic out crossing to other organisms. Yet, crops are grown easier on an unprecedented scale, can have a higher nutritional value, and novel organisms that are resistant to disease are being made available on the market thanks to Genetic Modification. Genetic Modification should not be banned because of the endless opportunities it gives to us despite the insubstantial negative effects it may have on the environment.

The safety of genetically modified foods is not verified yet, we are the lab rats to test the safety of them, which cause great risks and potential threats on human health.
