During the 1970s many studios closed their in-house special effects departments. Many of the now job-less special effects artists became freelancers or founded their own effects companies. It was also during this time period that a major blockbuster success that relied heavily on special effects was released. George Lucas’s Star Wars gave birth to a new era of science-fiction films with big budgets and impressive special effects. Lucas’s team of special effects artists further developed and refined many existing effects technologies.
