Gettysburg Address Rhetorical Analysis

The historian David Blight says that Lincoln’s message in the Gettysburg Address was to help the people recover from the deficit from the Battle of Gettysburg and the casualties that were caused by it. Lincoln simply wants to rebuild the country.

A speech from the movie “Remember the Titans,” (2000) brings out the importance and reasoning for the movie to be made. The Gettysburg Speech, by Coach Herman Boone is very strong and straight to the point of the movie. Coach Herman brings the movie to life with his speech about playing the game on a battlefield. He talks about how the fight for lives were fought on the same field as the football team were playing on to fight for their lives. This speech is meant for any age group, although it is specifically addressed to ones who play football. Coach Herman Boone uses the rhetorical appeals of logos, pathos, and ethos to inspire the football players to remove all their hate to become an actual team.

The Gettysburg Address is one of the most famous speeches in American history. The History Place indicates that on November 19, 1863 President Abraham Lincoln went to a battle field positioned in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania where three dreadful days of battle occurred called the Battle of Gettysburg. While he was attending the battle field to dedicate it as a national cemetery, he read his speech to the public. After the main orator, Edward Everett of Massachusetts, delivered his speech that lasted about two hours, it was Lincoln’s turn. Everyone was shocked that it only lasted a little over two minutes. The tone and stage are set with the background of the great battle field of Gettysburg’s. Our nation is involved in a great civil war between its brothers with two different views and divisions. President Lincoln has the daunting task as the President of the United States to bring healing to this torn country; to remind the country that it was only 87 years earlier that this young country started on its great experiment. The thesis statement answers the question and reminds the audience that all men are created equal and that the basis on which our country was founded on was liberty and equality.

The Emancipation Proclamation was a carefully crafted speech that was certainly not made overnight. The country had been moving towards it gradually, beginning with the The District of Columbia Compensated Emancipation Act in April of 1862, which freed all slaves in Washington in return for payment to their owners. The Second Confiscation Act in July of 1862. Stating that if the rebellion were to continue not to end within sixty days, the North would be sanctioned to seize rebel property, namely slaves. However, Lincoln’s ultimate goal was the preservation of the Union and the maintenance of the Constitution, not the freeing of slaves, which is clearly seen in this letter to Kentucky newspaper editor A.G. Hodges. He explains his rationale behind emancipation by stating, “I was, in my best judgment, driven to the alternative of either surrendering the Union and the Constitution, or of laying strong hand upon the colored element. I chose the latter.” Lincoln is referring to allowing African-Americans to join Union military campaigns and fight against the Confederacy. At the beginning of the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln was primarily focused on the preservation of the Union. It wasn’t until after the Battle of Antietam that Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, freeing all slaves in rebelling states and territories. He believed that emancipating slaves made the war a moral issue and that abolition was necessary to preserve the Union. I believe that as the war went on, Lincoln not only wanted to reunify the country, but abolish slavery as well.

The Gettysburg speech was short, sharp, powerful and one to remember. Still to this day it remains to a well known, well respected speech.

Lincoln spent weeks trying to perfect his speech, only to think that it was a failure after he delivered it. Little did he know it was going to be one of the most famous speech today. He used four main elements to make the speech memorable, timeliness, timelessness, eloquence, and effectiveness.

On November 17th 1863 Abraham Lincoln began to write his first draft of his Gettysburg Address. He wrote his famous speech in the White House, while he added a few notes the night before his address to the nation. During the month of November, there seemed to be several small wars and battles fought. None of which was as bloody as the battle that occurred in Gettysburg Pennsylvania. Also, in the year of 1863 America reached an achievement by introducing the Emancipation Proclamation, which was brought forth to end slavery.

In “The Gettysburg Address” by Abraham Lincoln, addresses that the people should honor the deaths of the fallen soldiers and honor their sacrifices. To commence, most soldiers who come back from war do not have jobs yet alone, most of the time soldiers will not even have a place to be able to call their own. In addition, for those veterans that have a job, it may feel complex for them to adapt, in fact, it’s extremely difficult, and especially for soldiers who are suffering from Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Regarding PTSD, it is also the same reason why it is hard for them to live with anybody else, because they tend to have anger problems and will end up being abusive all because of their disorder. In addition, when almost all veterans are burdened with PTSD and if it is not PTSD then it is another disability such as they; they got shot in the leg and cannot walk properly thus leaving them to try to seek the help they need, although they will not get it and sometimes the money they get is not enough to help their financial needs. Most veterans get money from many programs that help veterans who come back and that are discharged. President Lincoln emphasizes on how veterans deserve honor, yet there are veterans who are unemployed, mentally ill, and homeless all because the government does not do their part and give them the help they need.

The concepts of liberty and freedom are what the country of the United States are primarily built upon. Currently, citizens of all ethnicities, political standings, and other factors by which they can be discriminated upon share the rights to being free and equal amongst one another. In the period of time before the end of 1865, this was not the case as African Americans enslaved by landowners held no rights and were treated cruelly. Eventually, the freedom of African Americans was won as a result of a four-year-long battle which turned two halves of the country against one another. This war was fought between the North and the South, and the current president Abraham Lincoln was caught in the middle of the separation of his country. After the occurrence of an immense battle at Gettysburg, which resulted in the casualties of both Confederates and the Union, President Lincoln delivered a short speech which impacted history and was commended extensively. This speech named The Gettysburg Address is thought to be such a civilizing and eloquent speech due to Lincoln's appropriate use of structure, language, literary and rhetorical devices such as repetition, and allusion, and diction which altogether helped convey his main points in a three-minute time frame.
