Although, throughout history we have encountered many amazing artist, I have been personally drawn to artwork based around the Middle Age era. Artist valued their work, as well created beauty based around a Christian worldview. The use of color and detail make each piece unique and exquisite.
Both Giotto di Bondone and Donatello conveyed their Christian worldviews through their paintings and sculptures. Both using Christ and The Virgin Mary in their work, it leaves its viewers with a feeling of compassion and sincerity. Many Modern Age artist have represented themselves as inexpressive individuals only concerned with making a quick buck.
Di Bondone, commonly acknowledged as the father of the Renaissance because of his revolutionary painting techniques, spent his life decorating the religious houses of Italy with breathtaking detail and startlingly life-like subjects ("Giotto di Bondone Biography," 2017). Di Bondone was particularly known for his painting of The Last Supper, as well as the Madonna and Child. Both paintings resonate the love Bondone felt for Christ, as well as for art. The number of years it would take many artists to paint or sculpt their creations, is proof enough that their masterpieces must be perfected before they presented it to the buyer.
Giotto worked for the Bardi’s and the Perruzzi’s, the Florentine families who owned the most important European banks of the thirteenth century (“Timeline and facts about the life of Giotto di Bondone," n.d.).
Michelangelo was born on March 6, 1475 in Caprese, Italy. Michelangelo was known to be one of the best artists during the renaissance. Michelangelo never was interested in school work. He was always amazed by the painters and artist that were around him. Thus, igniting the flame and desire of him becoming a painter, artist, poet and sculptor. At the age of sixteen Michelangelo sculpted two reliefs, Battle of the Centaurs and Madonna Seated on a Step. Two of Michelangelo’s famous works was the Pieta and David. David is meant to symbolize a young, courageous warrior with a bow and arrow ready to take down his enemy. Michelangelo mad David out of discarded stone, a fact which most people are not aware of. Some other works that Michelangelo did
We are also shown how these different forms of art change over time and how different cultures have adopted them and used them as their own form of art to express emotion, love, creativity, and passion. This book teaches us how art is viewed in different ways by the church and was very informative for me to obtain a better and deeper understanding of art and how the churches valued it.
Raphael Sanzio was one of the most important artists of the Italian Renaissance. Raphael painted and designed many brilliant pieces of work and the stanzas inside the Vatican. He was a master at such necessities of modern art such as depth and perspective and the use of light and shadow, and was the turning point styles of paintings like the use of Madonnas in paintings. Through his short life, Raphael would make some of the most awe-inspiring, beautiful, and influential works of art during the Italian Renaissance.
In the fifteenth-century, the evolution of patronage begin, since power, and money influenced the creation of great artworks. One hand it flourished the Italian architectural collections other hand, notable designers as Brunelleschi, and Donatello designed and experimented with their creations. For example, Brunelleschi creation for the Medici family, which known as the Dome of Florence Cathedral (Fig 12-12). As it has been mentioned in the book he was the founder of the dome and it was one of the Gothic inspired and cost effective creation from that time period. Artist Donatello also made a contribution in the art world in a fascinating way since his work was inspired by as it has been mentioned in the book by the classical forms which
Man has been creating art for over 30,000 years. There are cave drawings, sculptures, Egyptian art, Greek Art, Modern Art and plenty more but to many, the Renaissance Art period is considered to be most important. Never had so many geniuses in art lived at one time and never had so many pieces of cherished art been produced. Two examples of Renaissance paintings are Cigoli’s Adoration of the Shepherds and Moretto da Brescia’s Entombment. Both paintings posses the attributes that were popular during the Renaissance period which I will now contrast and compare.
During this time was The Reformation of the church and this influenced a lot of artists of that time. The basis of The Reformation was that people began opposing the practices of the church. This relates to current times also. In the United States lately, there has been a revolt against the government. There have already been multiple works of art depicting these current events including artwork, music, videos, etc. This artwork shows that no matter what the message is, if it is based on biblical scripture, it will always be relevant to current

For this assignment I visited the David Owsley Museum of Art and chose the three pieces of art that really stood out to me. I chose the artwork, Book of Hours, Christ, and, Virgin and Child with St. John the Baptist. I found these to be the most interesting and have the best depiction of religion in the Middle Ages. Visiting the Museum gave me a lot of insight about the middle ages and appreciation for that time.
Michelangelo (1475-1564) was arguably the greatest artist during the Italian Renaissance period. His talents included sculpting, painting and architect, just to name a few. Michelangelo’s s most popular work was his Pieta and David sculptures and Sistine Chapel ceiling paintings. His works have been carefully preserved over the years for future generations to see his amazing work.
Known as a successful painter, sculptor, architect, and poet, many believe that Michelangelo was the most famous artist during the Italian Renaissance. Michelangelo was born Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni in Caprese, Tuscany, on March 6, 1475. His mother and father had five sons and he was the second child. Michelangelo’s father was in the banking business and realized when his son was only 13 that he was not interested in education and was continually watching the painters at nearby churches. (Bio.com)
Art in the Medieval Times was dreary and bland. Many works of art were solely about God or holy figures. The most obvious change from the Renaissance to Medieval Times was the arts, according to Document A and also that “One begins to know the names of the artists ... feel stronger emotions in the subjects”. This shows that Renaissance art not only changed in style, in changed in how it made the viewer feel when seeing the art. Similarly, in Document A, Renaissance art is described as “new artistic styles would echo the broader movements and interests of the new age.…”. As compared to Medieval Times, the style of art became something similar to the time that people could relate to. In the Medieval Times, art was just meant to extol God’s many feats. People who viewed the painting were supposed to put that style of art on a pedestal. Medieval art was supposed to be worshipped, not so much understood. The individual in the Medieval Times was supposed to take away from the painting that the only thing that mattered in their life was the Roman Catholic church and God already had a plan for their lives. But in comparison, Renaissance art was supposed to empower and help people of the time to understand themselves and the fact that they can change their own lives.
Leonardo di ser Piero da Vinci, better known as Leonardo da Vinci, was a Florentine artist and is probably one of the most recognized artists of the Renaissance. Two of his well-known works include the Mona Lisa and The Last Supper ("Leonardo
In 1489 at the age of 14 Michelangelo went to live and study with the Medici family. Living there he had the opportunity to meet important figures of the literary and humanistic scene of that time. Some of the people that became important to Michelangelo were Angelo Poliziano a philosopher, Pico delia Mirandola a poet, Marsilio Ficino and Cristoforo Landino {Dante’s annotator} and also studied under the guidance of a respected sculptor Bertoldo di Giovanni {1420-1491} once a student himself of Donatello {1386-1466}. Michelangelo spent two happy years there. During these years, Michelangelo spirit and intellect, had been formed by the humanistic values of the Renaissance but he was also influenced by the Christian believes that were prevalent
Religion has driven the creation of multiple renowned artistic innovations and visual marvels. Throughout Europe, religion played a huge role alongside the people being not only a belief system, but also having governmental control over political institutions. Throughout Europe’s medieval era and onwards, religion played a huge part in artistic culture. Art was used primarily to convey religious concepts and decorate places of religious worship. Gothic architecture is a prime example, many fresco paintings from in the fourteenth century were created in Christian churches, depicting tales from the bible as well as the Virgin Mary and her son. As the years past the styles and techniques for portraying religious artwork progressed and evolved with fresco mural paintings such as Giotto di Bondone’s Meeting of Joachim and Anna, as well as Jan van Eyck’s Double Portrait of Giovanni Arnolfini and his Wife.
When we look at the history of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, we always like to use the confinement of thinking and the liberation of ideas to sum up the two, especially in the art, the medieval paintings are often used in dark colors, deformed three-dimensional concept Showing the real world, and often less a bit human nature. And after the Renaissance, the painting masters are the opposite of it. I am not here to comment on their good or bad, but from the artistic point of view, to explore whether a good form of art needs to reflect the community and a wide range of civilizations
