Raphael Sanzio Essay

Religious artwork has been prevalent throughout all of history. Christian artwork has been ever changing and evolving based on what it going on during the time period in which the work was created. In Romanesque artwork, art was imaginative and involved mysticism along with themes that represented their fears of the end of the world. In Gothic artwork, the art turned away from evoking fear and instead had the goal of bringing people into the church. In the fourteenth century, the religious art responded to the crises of the time period. During the Renaissance, artwork shifted to an interest in realism, which can be seen in Raphael’s Madonna and Child with the Young Saint John. The medium for this work of art is oil paint. it was painted in 1500 and is 47 inches in diameter.

From the book Living with Art I chose Raphael. The School of Athens on page 160. This painting took place in Stanza della Segnatura, Vatican. Rome. This is a naturalistic stylized pace of art. The two visual elements of design that I saw in the Raphael painting, is color, and space. There are both horizontal, vertical, and diagonal lines to making up the arches and all the columns. An implied line is in each group of men and women in this paining. The group of young women and men in the bottom right hand corner are looking up at the ceiling as like the man are trying to describe the structure of it. We all know the famous Ninja Turtles, Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello and Raphael, but what do these names have to do with the Renaissance Art Movement? These famous names were all part of the great masters of early Renaissance art. Their talents included sculpture, painting, architecture, music and drawing, while also diving into sciences and literature. Throughout this time individual expression and worldly experience became the main themes of the century inspiring many budding artists to come.

Raphael Sanzio or Raffaello was an Italian master painter and architect of the Florentine school in High Renaissance, celebrated for the perfection and grace of his paintings. He was also called Raffaello Sanzio, Raffaello Santi, Raffaello da Urbino or Rafael Sanzio da Urbino. He moved to Florence at the age of 20, where he was exposed to Leonardo da Vinci, "whom he never ceased to admire as a mentor and father figure", and to Michelangelo. Raphael learned from both men, but while he made use of their exploration of human anatomy, he added sentiment to his paintings.He was commissioned by Julius II to paint some of the rooms at his palace at the Vatican. This marked a turning point, and he was only twenty-five years old. He remained almost exclusively in the service of Julius and his successor Leo X. He painted "a series of frescoes in the papal apartments" as well as those of the "Stanza della Segnatura, which include his vast School of Athens."

In the renaissance there were many famous artists and masterpieces. One of the most famous works of art is known as the statue of David, sculpted by Michelangelo. The statue of David is one of the greatest works of art from the high renaissance for so many reasons, including the fact that it is one of Michelangelo’s most well-known works of art. Michelangelo was one of the greatest artists from the high renaissance, along with many others. He created many masterpieces in his time and the statue of David may only be one of them but it is considerably the best.

Here’s some facts about Raphael Raphael was born on April 6, 1483, in Urbino, Italy he became Perugino’s apprentice in 1504. Living in Florence from 1504 to 1507, he began painting a series of Madonna’s. In Rome from 1504 to 1511 he painted the stanza Della segnatura frescoes located in the palace of the vatiein. He later painted another fresco cycle for the vatiein, in the Stanza d’Eliodoro (“Room of Heliodorus”). In 1514, Pope Julius II hired Raphael as his chief architect. Around the same time, he completed his last work in his series of the “Madonna’s,” an oil painting called Sistine Madonna. Raphael died in Rome on April 6, 1520. Raphael was born in Urbino, Italy on April 6, 1483. At the time of his birth Urbino was encouraging the arts and was a cultural center. Raphael's father, Giovanni Santi who was a painter for the Duke of Urbino (Federigo da Montefeltro), taught him, when he was young, the basics of "painting techniques and exposed him to the humanistic philosophy at the Dukes court. When he was 8 years old his mother died then when he was 11 years old his father died. After his death Raphael started managing his father's workshop and he quickly surpassed his father's work and was now considered the "finest painter in the town".

Michelangelo Buonarroti is a very well known artist from Italy and is know all over the world. He was more than just a painter he was a poet, sculptor, and architect. Michelangelo was born on March 6, 1475 to Francesca Neri and Leonardo di Buonarrota Simoni in Caprese, Italy. His family was in the banking business, he was born to the Florentine family of burgher nobility. Early in Michelangelo's life his mother became ill and he was places with a family of stonecutters. He loved going to a local church and watching the painters paint and drawing what he saw, that's where he grew his interest in painting. Michelangelo's friend from grammar school Francesco Granacci introduced him to a painter named Domenico Ghirlandaio.

Michelangelo is probably the most well-known painter of all time. He did works that none have been able to accomplish. He had artistic talent in almost every area of study. He could paint the most complicated and difficult tasks, an example: painting a ceiling with great detail and story. The ceiling of the system chapel in part shows the separation between God and man as it shows Adam’s arm and finger stretching out to touch God’s. The Greek’s muscular form makes a comeback in this era also, as can be seen through both the Sistine chapel as well as the statue of David. Another popular painter of the time period was Raphael. Raffaello Sanzio, known as Raphael, was an Italian painter and architect born in the mountain town of Urbino. In his early years, Raphael was trained by his father Giovanni Santi, a court painter and versifier, allowing him to gain a wide education in the arts, literature, and social skills. This enabled Raphael to move easily amongst the higher circles of court society and this helped him gain recognition. “His career falls naturally into three phases and three styles, first described by Giorgio Vasari: his early years in Umbria, then a period of about four years (from 1504-1508) absorbing the artistic traditions of Florence, followed by his last hectic and triumphant twelve years in Rome, working for two Popes and their close associates.” (Raphael Biography)

Most artists have a dark history that have inspired them to create beautiful artwork, however Raphael Sanzio De Urbino had a very successful social life along with creating well known classical artwork. Raphael’s artwork included many different elements of art, including triangles, diversity and rule of thirds. Raphael is an Italian artist from the early 1500’s and has changed his style multiple times, due to the influence of Petro Perugio. Considering all of the upcoming artists like Leonardo Da Vinci and Michelangelo, he eventually developed his own style and stuck to it . A few of Raphael’s most famous artwork is, The School of Athens, The Transfiguration, Sistine Madonna, and The Marriage of the Virgin.

On March 6th, 1475 Leonardo di Buonarrota and Francesca Neri had their second out of five sons in the small village of Caprese, Italy. They named him Michelangelo di Lodovivo Buonarroti Simoni. But soon after being birthed Michelangelo moved to Florence, Italy with his family.
