Giotto Renaissance Art

There was a change in mindset where these newer artists wrote about their blackness and instances occurring in black communities simply because it was a defining part of who they were, especially as women were given a voice in the movement and were able to incorporate a new viewpoint despite the evident hyper masculinity. There were many notable events taking place in the years 1900-1940, some being Pablo Picasso painting one of the first cubist paintings is 1907 , the sinking of the Titanic in 1912 , the 18th Amendment being added to the Constitution (prohibiting the use of intoxicating liquors) and then being repealed in 1933 , the 19th Amendment guaranteeing women the right to vote in 1920 , Amelia Earhart becoming the first woman to fly across the Atlantic in 1928 , and the list continues. Undoubtedly one of the most influential of events during this time was the Harlem Renaissance. Even with its many leaders and innovators, it wouldn’t have been nearly as effective had it not been for Alain LeRoy Locke: black writer, philosopher, and teacher who influenced black artists to look to African sources for pride and inspiration. Without Locke’s contribution, the Renaissance would not have flourished as much as it did, and black pride would have taken longer to develop and accept.

The term Renaissance means the word “Rebirth,” in French and was brought about by people rediscovering Greek and Roman classical literature (Renaissance). Many amazing inventions came out of this amazing time period from about 1350 to 17th century (History of the Renaissance in Europe). These inventions include, the printing press by a German man named Johannes Gutenberg in 1436 (Inventions of the Renaissance). This changed the way information is delivered and learned about today because books were being sold and passed along, as well as the need for people to learn how to read those books and write. Also, before the renaissance, artists mainly created dark and depressing works of art. But this changed when Giotto Di Bondone (c.1266/76-1337) broke away from the expressionless figures inspired by Byzantine and medieval art (Renaissance). He developed story with movement and emotion through his art. His frescoes (wall paintings made with fresh plaster) included scenes from the lives of Christ and of St. Francis of Assisi. Alternatively, African Americans struggling to get their message across has been prevalent for many centuries. Moving back multiple decades from the Civil Rights movement, we have the Harlem Renaissance which brought great changes to the declining economy. The environment it created allowed for African American culture to flourish. Many African Americans began their writing career and gained their recognition during this time. The Harlem Renaissance happened through the 1920’s and 1930’s. Many art forms were born in the Harlem Renaissance; things such as dance, blues and jazz, musical theater, and poetry. Many citizens began to recognize their work and thus the African Americans found their own way to make a stand. Harlem became a capital for African American communities in the United States, and during the Harlem Renaissance, art and literature happened as if it was an explosion of creativity. The Renaissance, a time period painted over like a great canvas with the names of legendary artists. People in the modern world know mostly the great names like Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Donatello, Raphael, etc. These names have become ingrained in culture, so much so that the names have taken on a new persona of four animated turtles. But like any time period these names barely scratch the surface of a cornerstone in the history of art. The Italian Renaissance was a significant era for art, because of the many famous artists of extraordinary skill who changed the craft forever. One of the notable figures that emerged from this great timeframe was Giotto di Bondone. Giotto was born around 1266 in Vespignano, Italy. Very little is known about his life as a child. As a thirteen year old boy, he was said to be a prodigy, so he was able to become the apprentice of Florentine Cimabue, a master of art. While di Bondone was traveling, word of his talents spread like wildfire, and he became so well known that his gift was said to be better than that of his masters.. His earliest works were a series of frescoes on the Saint Francis Church of Assisi in the mid 1290’s. As Di Bondone continued to paint the walls of prominent churches and chapels, his talents becoming more and more well known. Three years before his death, the people appointed him the Magnus Magister (The Great Master), the head Florentine architect and the Chief of Public Works. Giotto was believed to be one of the key influences on the Renaissance and Gothic art, because of his trailblazing technique, palette, and style.

The Renaissance was the period of time after the Black Death when people wanted to start over with their lives and make better decisions. During this time there were several significant artists that had great attributes and showed each of the classics, Raphael, Leonardo Da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Donatello. I believe that the most significant Renaissance artist was Michelangelo.

The Renaissance was a time of transformed thought and idea. Italy during this time was at the center. With this “rebirth,” Italian artists looked to ancient Greek and Roman art for inspiration. This inspiration brought a renewed love for the body.
