This paper will present a synopsis of the film, Girl, Interrupted. It will summarize the mental illness Borderline Personality Disorder, and the effects this disorder can have upon one’s life. Also, it will summarize the different symptoms and definition associated with this mental illness. This paper will provide my perspective on the treatment administered in this film and insight regarding what I believe would be improved treatment procedures. This paper will provide examples of treatments, symptoms and the general effects of this mental illness.

In this particular movie, Susannah dedicates herself to getting better at the mental hospital and takes part in the treatment plan. I feel this movie was a good example of the ABC modeling in crisis intervention. The head nurse, Valerie, develops a good rapport with Susanna. Dr. Wick, the attending psychiatrist, tries to get know her but Susanna doesn't respond as well to her at first. Susanna slowly opens up to the head nurse and later to the psychiatrist which allows them to identify her mental illness. The last step is treatment and counseling. She slowing does start to improve and is able to leave the hospital. The movie ends with her going back to her family, but stating that she would always remember the girls she met at the hospital. The movie followed the ABC model step by step. I do not believe that Susanna should have been placed in the mental hospital. This led to many traumatic events that could have been avoided with just outside counseling and
