By 2014, about 81% of the total 98.3 quadrillion Btu of energy used are produced by burning petroleum, natural gas, and coal in the United States (US EIA). Could you imagine how much greenhouse gases are produced in the energy extraction process, and how could these gases intensify global warming and climate change? In Naomi Klein’s book, This Changes Everything: Capitalism vs the Climate, Klein describes climate change as a catastrophic crisis that the whole world is encountering. Hundreds of cities are threatened by rising sea-levels, wildlife are in danger due to disruption of ecosystems, more extreme heat waves are recorded, all of these are essentially catalyzed by climate change. Klein blamed on capitalism, an economic model used by …show more content…
As evidence of climate change become more conspicuous and understandable, many suggestions were offered by scientists, politicians, and journalists to fight for it. One of Klein’s ideal approaches to tackle climate change is that the government should tell the industry that “we will support you, but only if you support the communities from which you profit, by providing well-paying local jobs, and sourcing your products locally” (126). However, no matter how much money a person has, one barely invests all of it solely to one aspect of interest, as most of us have a lot to take care of in life—family, residence, properties, friendship—while we have limited time and money. This is the same for corporations which are all managed by humans, who choose what to invest on for maximum profit. They do not make non-profitable investment which involves a too broad range of business, including both renewable and non-renewable industries. Consequently, the non-renewable employment sector must decline in response to the cooperation between companies and the government to provide more renewable jobs. According to the official statistics on the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the fossil fuel business—extraction, manufacturing and supply of coal, gas and oil—employs more than 2 million people in the US by January 2016 (U.S. BLS). the Climate,” where she addresses the relationship between human activities and the climate change. Throughout the article Klein argues that people and carbon fuels do not cause climate problems. In her opinion, the issue is due to an arrangement between the people and the materials that pollute the earth. Klein argues that capitalism leads to finding resources and exploit them, which lead to climate change. Klein believes that this capitalist agenda is a habit that now we are used to, but she thinks that we can change if we decide to take the following steps: 1- reviving and reinventing the public sphere, 2- Remembering how to plan, 3- Reigning in corporations, 4- relocalizing production, 5- Ending the cult of shopping, and 6- Taxing the rich and Filthy. In the end, Klein claim that responding to climate change would necessitate us from to break a number of capitalist rules, which need to be done urgently (Klein, para
During the past several hundred years, civilization has made rapid progress in industries like air travel, automobiles, and energy production. These developments were made without consideration of the long-term effects that their emissions may have on the planet. Changing weather patterns are now wreaking havoc around the world, and scientists attribute this to human-caused climate change. During President Obama’s State of the Union address in 2015, he stated that, “No challenge poses a greater threat to future generations than climate change,” (“Remarks by the President”). Warming temperatures caused by anthropogenic climate change have disastrous consequences that pose a threat to humanity and the environment.
Global warming is defined as the recent increase in the world 's temperature that is believed to be caused by the increase of certain gases (such as carbon dioxide) in the atmosphere. There are many different theories on whether global warming is similar or not to climate change. Simplistically, climate change is different because climate change is defined as a change in global or regional climate patterns or, in particular, a change apparent from the mid to late 20th century onwards and attributed largely to the increased levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide produced by the use of fossil fuels, having been measured over long periods of time, due to the changes in Earth’s orbit and organic carbon which reflect sunlight. Global warming and climate change are not to be confused because global warming is caused mainly by anthropogenic factors like the emission of carbon dioxide gas and use of fossil fuels whereas climate change is completely natural, however, according to Milan Radovanovic, “it is clear that the anthropogenic factors dominate the increasing temperature and the natural ones have the maximum influence…” (Radovanovic). Therefore, “the contribution to global warming from natural forcings and from natural internal variability is in the range between -0.2 to 0.2 [degrees] celsius over the period 1951-2010…” (Radovanovic). Natural factors have had the most effect on global temperature in the past 59 years totaling a 0.4 degrees celsius increase in
Temperatures are reaching a new high, snow and rainfall patterns are shifting, and more extreme climate events, such as drought, flooding, are taking place. It is not a forecast anymore; greenhouse gases are intensifying the global warming. In 2013, 81.2% of the energy consumption in the world are produced by fossil fuel (International Energy Agency). Could you imagine how much greenhouse gases are produced? Ever since 1980s, scientist has found that the emission of the greenhouse gases is the major factor contributes to the global warming, which intensify the climate change that the human civilization may collapse one day. In the book This Changes Everything: Capitalism vs. the Climate, the author Naomi Klein describes that we are headed toward a catastrophic levels of warming. She suggests that the solution to climate change, in short, is to fight for a change in the economic model of capitalism and move towards a low-carbon economy. Making this adjustments will affect every aspects of our life--from how the energy generate, what we consume, and the technologies we use. “Change of this magnitude creates risks but also opportunities. There will be both winners and losers as the world moves towards a low-carbon economy (**).” One of the important aspects which many people care about is the impact of climate change policy on employment. Does the movement improve the employment? Klein suggests that climate change policy has a huge
Look around. Every day, everyone will witness some sort of carbonic emission in some form dispersing into the atmosphere. You hear enough about it on the news, whether you care or not. However, the question lingers: is it even that big of a deal? Most likely, if you are a Republican, you will say that Democrats are blowing the whole climate change situation out of the water, or that the warming of our earth is completely natural. Notice how they switched it from global warming to climate change; that is because their previous assumptions and models have not been completely accurate, right? On the other hand, if you are a Democrat, you are most likely seething over the statements you just read and want to do anything you can to prevent this possible catastrophic disaster. 97% percent of climate scientists agree that Climate Change is here and now, caused by all of us… right? Democrats are also more likely to target and blame carbon emissions on the rising temperatures. Nevertheless, William McDonough, a famous urban planner, says that targeting carbon is a purely political move. Further, carbon should be a useful resource for humans, and an imbalanced carbon cycle is to blame. In fact, McDonough claims this imbalance is the result of poor and inadequate urban designing. Are any climate change believers right? Or are Donald Trump and friends correct in pointing the finger at the problem and saying, “wrong!” First and foremost, let us explore the partisan views on the issue.
In the novel This Changes Everything: Capitalism vs. the Climate, author Naomi Klein argues that climate change is an inevitable crisis leading toward disaster. She discusses the urgent need to shift towards renewable energy and the need to move away from a "savagely unjust economic system,” that has led our economy towards to extractivism(15).
the climate” by Naomi Klein addresses the issue of climate change and its relation to Capitalism. Klein’s general argument is that climate change and environmental crises cannot be addressed from a Capitalist perspective because the latter advocates for wasteful consumption, which result in serious problems in the climate and the environment in general. Klein argues that human intelligence through scientific findings and technological development is capable of finding ways to protect the environment (Kelin, page 22). Klein offered solutions, which are “reviving and Reinventing the Public Sphere,” “remembering how to plan,” “Reigning in Corporation,” “relocalizing production,” “ending the cult of shopping,” and “taxing the rich and
According to Mindy S. Lubber president of Ceres, “many U.S. companies today are still downplaying the possible risks of climate change and its far-reaching business impacts.” Still using fossil fuels and releasing carbon dioxide in large amounts will have large effects on the Earth, if companies aren’t careful. The idea of global warming has been around in the United States for many years. In fact, climate change has had effects on people and the environment for a while, and it may continue. The companies use fossil fuels for energy to receive the positive business effects that they give. However, companies are already starting to see consequences for releasing too much carbon dioxide. Companies
Climate change is a major problem that’s continuing to arise with the lack of action that states have taken to stop the increase of global warming. This phenomenon affects both national security and human security across the world. National security is a nation that the government, along with the legislation, should protect the state and citizens against different kinds of “national” crises through different power projections. Examples of the power projections are political power, diplomacy, economic power, military might, and more self help methods. Human security is a combination of threats that are associated with war, genocide, and the displacement of populations. In short, human security means freedom from violence and from the fear of violence.
In our modern time, pollution has inherited roots almost everywhere on the planet, which is causing dramatic changes to the climate. I grew up in northern Iraq located in the Middle East. Here, people suffered from the unhealthy air emitted by oil industries in the area, which led many people to relocate elsewhere. Social activist and environmentalist would judge this as one of the many effects triggering for climate change. Klein is a Canadian Journalist, socialist and author to the book This Changes Everything: Capitalism vs the Climate. She argues, Capitalism are causing the change to the climate and in order to solve this issue, those people must work clean. According to Naomi Klein, she called the first part of her book “Bad Timing” because
They looked at two scenarios, inaction, where business’ continue finding and using carbon as they see fit, and action, where business’ use a low-carbon energy mix. They found that not only would the investment cost of the action scenario be no more than inaction, but it would even cost a bit less- 190.2 trillion dollars for action and 192 trillion dollars for inaction. This is before even considering the amount of money saved by the effects of the action scenario itself. The report found that, “the difference in climate damage costs between low (1.5°C) warming and high (4.5°C) warming scenarios could be as high as $50 trillion” (Business Insider). The effect of such a large economic company reporting this data is the perfect example of how using economics for the sake of reversing global warming can be really beneficial. The argument often used by economists is that becoming more sustainable would hurt the economy, but the data in this report proves just the opposite, and how terrible it would be if we did nothing. For the sake of investment in industry’s like coal and gas, this information is often denied. But this is not anywhere near the first time industry’s have had to adapt due to uncontrollable events. This report emphasizes the importance of recognizing
While we are immersing ourselves in the world which props up carbon-intensive lifestyle, our climate catastrophes are escalating, leaving a massive mess to our numerous future generations. Under our existing economic, social and political structure, it appears to be desperate in mitigating the climate problem. However, This Changes Everything, by Naomi Klein, might have offered the most appropriate antidote to climate change. Klein is a Canadian social activist and in 2014, her above-mentioned book was a New York Times non-fiction bestseller and the winner of the Hilary Weston Writers' Trust Prize for Nonfiction. This book discusses how neoliberalism and capitalism have led to climate change. In the book, Part One and Part Two are titled as “Bad Timing” and “Magical Thinking” as our climate problem is intensifying with the prevalence of capitalism, yet, people have erroneous inclination on the Messiahs to solve the disaster for us. A meeting discussing global warming and the ongoing climate change (and the impact CO2 emissions have on the growing problem) has been in session in Peru for the past few days. Dozens of world leaders are gathering to discuss possible changes that can be implemented to halt the increase in temperature seen around the globe. However, many prominent scientists have stated that it may be too late for these world leaders to make any significant impacts (Associated). These scientists, and many other people around the world, believe that humans have contributed significantly to global warming, and as a result mankind needs to do whatever it can to combat this ongoing crisis. Nearly 3,500 miles away from Peru, United States Senator James Inhofe is in Washington D.C., representing Oklahoma in the United States Senate. Senator Inhofe is one of the loudest preachers of the belief that global warming is not the dire threat that so many scientists make it out to be. Inhofe has claimed that it is “arrogant for people to believe human beings are able to change what He (God) is doing in the climate” (Tashman). The Senator believes that only God controls the climate and the environment, and to even think that humans are impacting the earth’s climate is misguided (Tashman). These two opposing viewpoints bring with them questions of religion, politics, human responsibility, and ultimately the fate of the planet. On one side, there are those who say that the science is so concrete, and the
The world is warming and we cannot deny it, the longer we deny the larger the problem it will become. Global warming is affecting the world economy, the overall health of the population, and most importantly the environment that surrounds us. Ignoring this problem will not just make it suddenly disappear; the world has to make an effort to stop it while it can still be maintained. Accepting the fact that it is happening is just the first step, the next step is taking action and becoming informed on the issue.
Global warming has become a well conversed topic among scientists and peoples in the world today. There are extremists who do everything possible to stop contributing to the warming, but the average person does little to alleviate the issue and in many cases refuses to acknowledge that there is a problem at all. Dating back to millions of years ago, even before humanity was born, the world has always experienced one form or another of warming; so the warming seen today is not as bizarre as many may think. The prevalent saying that history often repeats itself, is no joke when discussing global warming. As to what is kindling the current warming, that is where a query is imposed. Scientists from around the globe have theorized close to every possible contributor to the warming seen today, and the conclusion that present occurrences of global warming are being evoked by human interference has become evident.
