The third proposition of Gloria Ladson Billings(1995) three culturally relevant pedagogy propositions is critical consciousness: “ a broader sociopolitical consciousness that allows them to critique the cultural norms, values, mores, and institutions that produce and maintain social inequities” (p. 162). The critical consciousness proposition requires students to think critically and challenge the status quo. Although Ladson Billings contends that teachers often neglect the critical consciousness proposition because they do not see themselves as activists, Teachers should emulate Things Fall Apart’s protagonist, Okonkwo, to strengthen their critical consciousness skill. What is it that has happened to our people? Why have they lost the power to fight? ...We must fight these men and drive them from our land” (Achebe, 1959, p. 175). While Okonkwo believes that they have guns and machetes and need to fight, Obierika, on the other hand, feels that is too late since many of their clansmen have converted to Christianity. Furthermore, Okonkwo asks “Does the white man understand our custom about land?” (Achebe, 1959, p. 176). Okonkwo criticizes the white men and their perception of his tribe, but also his fellow clansmen for not taking action against the white men. Additionally, when he knowingly commits the abomination of suicide, Okonkwo’s decision to break the clan laws classifies him as the ultimate activist. In the end, Okonkwo stands up for his beliefs and affirms the customs of the clan because through his death, the clansmen are reminded of their beliefs. Obierika explains to the District Commissioner that it is against their customs for a man to take his own life and thus, his men must help to bury Okonkwo. Like Okonkwo, teachers can serve their students through critical reflection of their experiences and the injustices in the urban education
