In “A Good Man Is Hard to Find,” by Flannery O’ Connor, the narrator talks about the grandma did not want to go to Florida, but instead she wanted to go to Tennessee. That part reminded me of when, in the summer of 2012, my family and I took an RV trip across the west coast of the United States. The first state we stayed in was Tennessee. We had just bought the RV about a month before, and we took it on little test runs before we left for the main trip. This drive to Tennessee was the farthest we have ever driven in the RV. My dad drove about eleven hours to finally get to our destination. It was the first day a long three week RV trip. We did not do much in Tennessee, we got Pizza Hut for dinner and just relaxed. I remember Tennessee …show more content…
The last park I went to was Central Park in New York. I did not get to walk around a lot because it was the middle of November and it was very cold out. Also, since Central Park is so big, I only got to see a small part of it. My favorite part was the carriage ride that we were able to take around Central Park. It did get really cold on the carriage because I was just sitting still, but it was definitely worth it. I also remember walking past a man-made ice rink that was outside, and as a Floridian I have never ice skated outside before. We ended up not ice skating because it did not look fun at all. I also remember walking around this little zoo area that was in Central Park. I went to all the tourist spots in Central Park, but it was definitely worth it. Central Park is massive and I cannot wait to go back when it is a lot …show more content…
That part reminded me of the three years I took French in high school and how I do not remember anything. I started taking French my freshman year of high school, because my mom took French when she was in high school. My first year of French was the best and it is where I learned and remember most of the French words and sayings. Than when I became a sophomore I got a new French teacher and everything went downhill after that. French my sophomore year was not that bad because it was a lot of review until the second semester. All that review helped, but I cannot seem to remember learning anything new that year. Than when I started taking my third year of French, with the same teacher, I felt like I just forgot everything. French was honestly a fun class to take because I liked learning about the different cultures and events associated with the country. I liked when we would watch French movies or read French books I seem to get a better concept of what I was being
If you were to ask someone what their definition of a happy life would be, they would probably give you an answer like, “having fun.” This is completely untrue in Aristotle’s terms. According to Aristotle, for a man to lead a happy life he must learn each of the intellectual virtues, and practice each of the moral virtues throughout his life. These moral virtues are justice, courage, temperance, magnificence, magnanimity, liberality, gentleness, prudence, and wisdom. With so many virtues to constantly abide by, a man cannot know if he has led a happy life until his life is nearly finished. In the story “A Good Man is Hard to Find,” by Flannery O’ Connor, the question is
The story I picked is from O’Connor “A Good Man is Hard to Find. I chose this story because of previous stories that O’Connor wrote were fascinating such as “Good Country People.” The titles she uses for her short stories just interest you to read them and figure out what is the meaning behind the title. When I first saw the title I assumed it to be a love story of a young woman looking for a good man to marry after many failed attempts to find him. After you read the story, you will be able to tell I was way off. The thesis to “A Good Man is Hard to Find” is based on selfish characters who believe their way of living or thought is right and could not be questioned but learned the hard way but while ending in violence.
In the story “A Good Man is Hard to Find”, it starts out by having the family go on a vacation to Tennessee and not to Florida because there is a Misfit on the loose. On their way, the family passes different landmarks including a cotton field and a restaurant. The Grandmother realizes that there was a plantation she once visited nearby. On their way to the house, she realizes that the house is not actually where she says it was and she jerks herself making the cat jump in front of the drivers face making him crash the car. A passing car comes and the Grandmother points out it’s the Misfit with his two men. The Misfit says, “you shouldn’t have said who I was, you should have kept it a secret” (O’ Connor 1241). This forces the Misfit to send his men to go kill John Wesley and Bailey in the woods. The grandmother then looks to the Misfit and asks him to pray. The Grandmother then says that “you are like one of my own children” (O’ Connor 1245) and after that the Misfit shoots and kills the Grandmother. He wishes that it didn’t have to end that way because he is proclaiming he is not a bad man, he didn’t find pleasure out of it.
In the Flannery O’Connor’s short story, “A Good Man is Hard to Find” we find out that the title indicates of what the story is about. The title actually came from the lyrics of a song written by Eddie Green in 1918. The title of “A Good Man is Hard to Find” by Flannery O’Conner is quite ironic really. The reader expects to eventually find a good man in the story, but is quite surprised at the ending of the story. The title "A Good Man is Hard to Find" is expressed clearly in this story by introducing a variety of male personalities that all have one thing in common; they are not truly good men.
I firmly believe that people reap what they sew. In the story, “ A Good Man Is Hard to Find,” the grand mother is a prime example of this scenario. Her pathetic ploys and acts of deviance cause harm to the family throughout the story and it ends up coming back to her in the end. You can tell that harms is inevitable for the family by some of the clues that are found in the grandmother’s

The story begins with a Grandmother trying to convince her son, Bailey and daughter in law to take a vacation in East Tennessee rather than Florida because of the escape of an escaped convict known as the Misfit and the children have already been there (Kirszner & Mandell, 2012). The Grandmother’s grandson states that she should just stay home, in which the granddaughter replied that she would not want to miss anything, as she had to always go where the family went. The Grandmother dressed as a lady, and was the first in the car, hiding her cat in a basket so her son did not see it. “A Good Man is Hard to Find,” written by (Mary) Flannery O’Connor is about a grandmother who reminisces with her grandchildren on the good versus evil in the world.
Standing Tall It is the human condition to be dependent upon others; this has always been so. Humans look up to siblings, best friends, grandparents, and even teachers but the most sought out dependency in life is in the form of a father. Much is expected from the male gender, but moreso of fathers. A father’s predetermined role in society is to make the decisions for, protect, and keep order in his home.
I find myself missing the major hints or clues in a book, even if they are right in front of me. Usually, I have to read a book twice to finally understand why the story ended that way. This is the same way with “A Good Man is Hard to Find” by Flannery O’Connor’s. The story is about a family who wants to have a vacation in Florida. The grandmother, who is the focus of the story, wants to go to Tennessee instead. She tries to convince everyone that there is a killer running loose down in Florida; the Misfit. They all ignore her and drive to Florida anyway. Without telling her family union, the grandmother brings her cat along for the ride. They drive for several hours until they stop at a restaurant called Red Sammy’s. She talks to the owner of the restaurant about how people are not nice anymore and “good men are hard to find.” They leave the restaurant and head back on the road, but the
In Flannery O'Connor's eccentric short story, “A Good Man is Hard to Find” the reader is introduced to her fundamental theme of Identity through a typical southern family. O’Connor’s exceptional use of fictional elements such as characterization, point of view, and setting further develop this theme in her work. She does so by familiarizing the use of violence, humor, and salvation along with point of view and setting to create a deeper connection between her work and the reader.
I remember being at Canada’s Wonderland Park in Vaughan, Ontario with my friends during my last week before moving, not wanting the day to end because I was scared by the thought that I won’t be back there after a really long time.
Subject to Change In “A Good Man is Hard to Find,” the grandmother has a major life-changing moment. She is a major yet relatively static character up until the end of the story, having her epiphany and change of heart moments prior to being shot (Mays 122). She spends the majority of the story being a selfish, manipulative old woman. The grandmother is so caught up in being considered a lady she forgets what actual “grace” is - grace that she’s been preaching to The Misfit up until the end of the story.
Flannery O’Connor’s “A Good Man is Hard to Find’ tells of a seemingly normal family with a bit of dysfunction. Throughout this tale, the author fabricates a number of characters, some inconsiderable, others full of depth and history that present themselves wildly open to interpretation. Looking into O’Connor’s past, it is clear to see her relationship with a number of these fictional minds and pull from these the meaning behind her hidden pain and anguish. We are therefore presented with a mother and sons family who are prisoners in a manipulative, destructive relationship.
In the short story “A Good Man is Hard to Find” the author, Flannery O’Connor communicates literary symbols and prominence of Southern culture. Within the story, there are subtle yet important details that make the entirety of the piece as iconic as it is. The reoccurring theme of being a lady and moral codes both are important to the overall concept of the story.
“A Good Man Is Hard to Find” is composed by Flannery O’Connor, who was born and raised in the south. The tale she constructed starts off with the grandmother being reluctant to the idea of attending a family vacation in Florida; however, the grandmother mood transformed the following day. As the journey progressed, the grandmother reminisced about an old childhood plantation she visited when she was an adolescent. After revealing to her grandchildren how there was a secret panel on the plantation in Georgia, the children agitated their father until he capitulated. As Bailey is driving down the road his mother directed him to travel upon, something tragic occurs due to a series of events that began with the grandmother realizing she was incorrect
