When I first started researching my husband’s surname of Goucher back in 1993, I wrote to the various Goucher researchers I came across. My husband’s paternal line can be found in the Derbyshire town of Scarcliffe, close to the Nottinghamshire border. The Surname itself though appears quite heavily in the County of Staffordshire and Yorkshire, with a further instance of the surname in Sussex in the South East of England.
One of the researchers I wrote to wrote back to me with two interesting comments. Firstly, that there was always a Samuel in the various family lines. Yes, I would agree with that. My husband’s great and great, great Grandfathers’ were both called Samuel. The second thing that was shared was the story of a large extended family of Goucher’s who migrated to the United States and were well known gunsmiths. The timeframe for the migration was around the 1861–1865 period which is the same time span as the American Civil War, although there has been earlier references found to a variation of the surname.

Some of my husband’s early ancestors in the Derbyshire area were recorded as Goacher and rather interestingly I also have Goacher’s on my maternal line, and I suspect that might be a subject for another day! The reality is that there are around thirty variants to the surname and I am not at all sure I will ever get to the bottom of it

Her essay is aimed at Middle Americans or other immigrants living in the country who face the same issue as her. Having a name that is uncommon and hard to pronounce, can be a challenge for the peers of those with the names. The claim is not being made toward the easy to pronounce Bill’s, Susan’s, and Richard’s. The claim is also not aimed at professionals or people of
My name, Daryl Naquin, Jr., represents the fascinating social attitude that males are considered to be the carriers of the family legacy. I contribute to the trend that Virginia Postrel mentions of boys’ names changing slower due to the influence of custom. Unless I were to change my name in the future, which is highly unlikely, this social duty is something that I will inevitably carry out if I were to have a family of my own. I represent my dad, my family, our values, and our aspirations. Moreover, it is interesting to consider the belief across many cultures that one can “stain” the family

English 102 is a college level of reading and writing course based on the theme monster. When I started the class, I thought monsters as scary creature in the books and movies. As I progressed in English 102, I found out monsters is more than what I though t is. Monsters can represent the fear of people and society, a problem in a society, something that is keep coming back and coming back(Such as financial crisis), natural hazard and danger. It also can serve as a warning; so, people avoid the same mistakes.

Frank Boucher was some Ranger player in my opinion. He was an “Original Ranger”. Among all of the “Original Rangers”, not even Lester Patrick, stayed a Ranger for as long as he did. He contributed 31 years to hockey. He was a club player from 1926 to 1938, was a coach from 1939 to 1948, and was a general manager from 1946 to 1955.
“People can only be found in what they do.(1)” That’s what Timothy Findley believed in despite having health illness and dropping out of 10th grade. He found himself in writing as Timothy Findley “published eight more novels, three short-story collections, and two memoirs” (2) Impressive isn’t it? Timothy Irving Frederick Findley was a successful Canadian author with a victorious childhood, many accomplishments and contribution to Canadian literature throughout his life.

Drury is English. This family descended from John De Drury, the son of a Norman French nobleman, who fought his way to power in England along with William the conqueror in 1066. The Drury’s held large estates in Suffolk, England for centuries. Their coat of arms from the 1200’s has a Tau cross between two gold stars on a green band across the top of a silver shield. The family in later years moved over to the United States to get a better life and like people would say “restart” in the new life of America. Drury descendants lived in Massachusetts as early as 1651.
In chapter eleven, "The Europeanization of Europe," Bartlett discusses how name could change for convenience purposes, but those purposes may have been for specific identification reasons; for example, a name could represent someone's ethnic origin (270-271). Last names were not really used by the major populace, so becoming John of Verona, helped to separate him from John of Florence. We still use names today for identification purposes, and still change them at will: think marriage, a woman will often change her last name to show the world that she has willingly joined with another human, and is honoring him by taking his family's
This can be shown when Gogol’s in Maxine’s house in New Hampshire and Pamela says “But you’re Indian… I’d think the climate wouldn’t affect you, given your heritage” (157). People don’t seem him as American, which alienates him and causes him to put a wall between his past and his present. With the adoption of the name ‘Nikhil’, he can live only in the present but he cannot forget his old name. Subconsciously, he is still Gogol and so he does not respond immediately when he is addressed as Nikhil. He tries to become an entirely different person from what really he is. As Nikhil, he embodies the AmericnGogol struggles to carry the burden of two names. Nikhil resembles American names, yet ‘Gogol’ and his past follow him everywhere. Gogol is an outsider in American society whereas he does not feel intimacy with Bengali
The novel The Namesake written by Jhumpa Lahiri writes about the struggle and hardships of a Bengali couple who immigrate to the US from India to create a lifestyle outside of everything they have known all their lives. The story begins as Ashoke marries Ashima and brings her to the Massachusetts. Their first child’s name is Gogol, which they didn’t intend on naming initially but because of different mistakes, Gogol has officially become his name. This book/film gave a pleasant insight into identity
