Each nation in the world has their own kind of government in order to keep order and peace within its boundaries; however, they had a long history of battles and issues that they had to overcome in order to get where they are in the present. There are many system of government which a country can practice on their; such as parliamentary republic, democratic, or totalitarian. In the case of a totalitarian government, the leader or the party leader is the head to the government, which this makes them use different techniques in order for the people of the country to follow their orders. For example, in the fictional novel 1984 the government has a totalitarian government with the head of the government being Big Brother; in this fictional government the usage of propaganda is their way to control their people and make them believe that the nation is doing their best for their people. The main technique that the party leader use with the propaganda is the usage of a ideology which is delivered with the motto “War is Peace, Freedom is Slavery, Ignorance is Strength” (Orwell 6), which this statement is located in every visible place of the country in order to remain the citizens the standards that one should follow in order to keep the government in order. The “War is Peace” signifies how the nation is in war with other countries in order to obtain peace after the defeat of the other nations. For example, during the war of the churches in England between 1640 and 1660, the people
The United States government is certainly better than totalitarian and authoritarian governments, and can be rated as one of the top countries for protecting individual rights and ensuring citizen political participation. The United States is a constitutional government so the individual liberties of the people are protected, and the government can not have complete control over everything because they too are confined by laws. This is unlike totalitarian governments that do not care or provide for individual rights and do not have anything confining them, so they are allowed to do whatever they like. Also, authoritarian governments do not allow citizen participation in government, while the United States does which makes our country freer
The way that the regime does this is through heavy amounts of propaganda that tell people only what they want them to hear. This can be seen towards the end of the book when Montage escapes the police; then after they realize that they lost him they kill an innocent man and claim that it is Montage. Ultimately, this is a prime example of the way that government covers up their failures by killing an innocent man; furthermore, this shows the bureaucracy creating propaganda through media outlets in order to keep a strong grip on its people. The final way that the government controls the society is by using fear tactics and intimidation. This can be seen when anyone in the society sells out anyone in order to obey the government. Furthermore, this can be seen when Montage gets caught with books; he ended up getting caught due to his wife and other neighbors ratting him out. This shows that Montage’s own wife gave him over not because she wanted to, but she feared what would happen to her if she didn’t. This is a clear example of the government using
Propaganda is used to manipulate society. In George Orwell’s book “1984” manipulation of society is used through propaganda by making them all believe a certain thing. In the book they
The three slogans of the party are “WAR IS PEACE, FREEDOM IS SLAVERY, IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH”, (Orwell, 7). At first glance, these slogans would appear absurd but after further investigation they ironically couldn’t be more true. War is Peace means that while the country is at war the people’s attention is diverted from seeing the corruption of the government. Nobody rebels against the government because they have a bigger issue to handle, the war. Ignorance is strength meaning that the people’s ignorance causes them to not question the Party which is the party’s idea of making the country strong. Freedom is slavery means that if people are given the freedom to do what they wish and show ideas that are not for the party, everybody becomes weak. They are imprisoned by the thoughts they conjure which means they cannot stand up against even one idea from the party.
Totalitarianism is a form of government in which the national government takes control of all aspects of both public and private life. Totalitarianism occurred after the Czars ended their reign, bringing new leaders with new ideas. These ideas led to the USSR becoming a communist country. Joseph Stalin won the election against Leon Trotsky and was the dictator of Russia during that time, and eliminated any form of freedom in Russia. He abused his power as ruler and caused chaos among Russian citizens.

Imagine living in a world of complete rejection of liberal ideas and absolute conformity. Citizens of this world do not have the freedom to choose their occupation. In fact, these citizens have no rights. They cannot speak freely, they do not enjoy any personal freedoms or privacy, and the media is aggressively censored. This is the world of George Orwell’s 1984 and Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451. The protagonist of Fahrenheit 451 is Guy Montag, and he is a fireman. His job is to destroy books completely by setting fire to them. Winston Smith is the main character in 1984, where he works as a civil servant in the lower class ruling party. Both of these men become entranced with the past and how life was before a totalitarian government.
Soon after the conclusion of World War II in 1945, Communism posed a threat in the United States. This threat, also known as the Red Scare, was triggered because of the tension between the Soviet Union and the United States. The tension between the two superpowers led to the beginning of the Cold War in the late 1940s. Because the Soviets were a communistic country, many Americans feared Communism because of the influence that it had in America. Many intellectuals supported Communism in the U.S. which led to more concern within the country. The communistic threat presented by the Soviets in the war led to the spread of Communism within the U.S. It was a fear that many Americans spoke out against in attempt to save the American
In The Republic of Oceania, propaganda, mythologies, fear, rumors and misinformation control the minds of its citizens. The Inner Party maintains power through pervasive observation and total control of information, food, law enforcement, and economics, creating instability and disorganization in the masses. No one in the Outer Party can know for sure who is friend or enemy and this is the genius of their tactics. It can both control using an omnipresent figurehead, Big Brother, without actually being held responsible for manipulation. Since no one appears to be in charge. War is essential to keep the masses poor, hungry, and humble. Counterintelligence and propaganda cause a breakdown in family stability and make relationships nearly impossible. Finally, fear is used to intimidate and break the will of the people. The symbol of the state 's boot heal crushing the skull of a citizen is the dominant image that resonates in the novel--this is what will be remembered of the 20th century. The mass genocide caused by state-waged war against its enemies and its people is the legacy of 1984 and its era.
The governments in today’s society have brainwashed their citizens into believing everything their leader says and thinks is correct and everything else is wrong. This can sometimes be known as a totalitarian government. George Orwell’s novel 1984 revolves around totalitarianism. The members of the party in Oceania are taught and required to worship their leader Big Brother whether they believe in him or not. In the novel 1984, George Orwell shows the problems and the hatred with a totalitarian government through his use of symbolism, situational irony, and indirect characterization.
The government of Oceania used propaganda in so many amazing ways. Their posters of Big Brother along with their slogans caused many people to crumble. The most important of these slogans is "BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU." (pg. 4) They are trying to relay the message that you are never alone, no matter what you are doing, you will be caught. Again they also use the telescreens to implement their forms of propaganda. The two minutes of hate became a frenzy where "People were leaping up and down in their places and shouting at the tops of their voices " (pg. 16) They are inspiring loyalty to the party, making it so their enemies are evil and completely hated and the party loved and always correct "The dark-haired girl behind Winston had begun crying out Swine! Swine! Swine!, and suddenly picked up a heavy newspeak dictionary and flung it at the screen. It struck Goldstein 's nose " (pg. 16) The junior anti-sex league was a form of propaganda used to stop teens completely from engaging in sexual relations which causes loyalty between people. Once again the party is trying to eliminate any types of bond which could lead to insurrection or loyalty to anything other than the party itself "The party was trying to kill the sex instinct, or, if it could not be killed, than to distort it and dirty it." (pg. 69) The most hidden way that the party controls its
Totalitarianism is by definition an authoritarian political system or state that regulates and controls nearly every aspect of the public and private sectors. In 1984 and V for Vendetta both governments are successful because of the totalitarian regime they conveyed. As a result of this they are able to control the people and the media which they fill with propaganda. In addition to this the governments are extremely effective at suppressing any sort of rebellion within their countries.
Albeit totalitarian administrations have existed in different countries including North Korea, and Iraq, they started in Europe and were portrayed by pioneers with solid identities, for example, Hitler in Nazi Germany and Stalin in the Soviet Union. A democracy is a form of government in which the leaders are chosen by the citizens’ votes, and in which the people have a say in decisions about the state’s affairs. The primary characteristics of democracy include political freedom, rule of law, and legal equality. The Brahman caste in India, the Spartiates in Sparta are various historical examples of the social aristocracy or nobility. The country Russia has been marked an oligarchy in light of the fact that, after the fall of Communism, political
