The government of Oceania used propaganda in so many amazing ways. Their posters of Big Brother along with their slogans caused many people to crumble. The most important of these slogans is "BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU." (pg. 4) They are trying to relay the message that you are never alone, no matter what you are doing, you will be caught. Again they also use the telescreens to implement their forms of propaganda. The two minutes of hate became a frenzy where "People were leaping up and down in their places and shouting at the tops of their voices…" (pg. 16) They are inspiring loyalty to the party, making it so their enemies are evil and completely hated and the party loved and always correct… "The dark-haired girl behind Winston had begun crying out ‘Swine! Swine! Swine!, and suddenly picked up a heavy newspeak dictionary and flung it at the screen. It struck Goldstein 's nose…" (pg. 16) The junior anti-sex league was a form of propaganda used to stop teens completely from engaging in sexual relations which causes loyalty between people. The United States government is certainly better than totalitarian and authoritarian governments, and can be rated as one of the top countries for protecting individual rights and ensuring citizen political participation. The United States is a constitutional government so the individual liberties of the people are protected, and the government can not have complete control over everything because they too are confined by laws. The three slogans of the party are “WAR IS PEACE, FREEDOM IS SLAVERY, IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH”, (Orwell, 7). At first glance, these slogans would appear absurd but after further investigation they ironically couldn’t be more true. War is Peace means that while the country is at war the people’s attention is diverted from seeing the corruption of the government. Nobody rebels against the government because they have a bigger issue to handle, the war. Ignorance is strength meaning that the people’s ignorance causes them to not question the Party which is the party’s idea of making the country strong. Freedom is slavery means that if people are given the freedom to do what they wish and show ideas that are not for the party, everybody becomes weak. They are imprisoned by the thoughts they conjure which means they cannot stand up against even one idea from the party.

The way that the regime does this is through heavy amounts of propaganda that tell people only what they want them to hear. This can be seen towards the end of the book when Montage escapes the police; then after they realize that they lost him they kill an innocent man and claim that it is Montage. The most seen slogans of the Party are the mottos, which are heavily enforced and lived by the people. Its mottos are prominent throughout the novel and can literally be seen almost everywhere they look. Although the mottos do not seem like a direct command, they serve to leave open interpretation as to what the government is doing to the them. There are different ways to view these slogans and the real meanings behind them are not even close to what most believe. As Winston is contemplating life, he wanders in the street and, “Like an answer, the three slogans on the white face of the Ministry of Truth came back at him: WAR IS PEACE, FREEDOM IS SLAVERY, IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH” (26). No one in the Outer Party can know for sure who is friend or enemy and this is the genius of their tactics. It can both control using an omnipresent figurehead, Big Brother, without actually being held responsible for manipulation. Since no one appears to be in charge. War is essential to keep the masses poor, hungry, and humble. Counterintelligence and propaganda cause a breakdown in family stability and make relationships nearly impossible. Finally, fear is used to intimidate and break the will of the people. The symbol of the state 's boot heal crushing the skull of a citizen is the dominant image that resonates in the novel--this is what will be remembered of the 20th century. Imagine living in a world of complete rejection of liberal ideas and absolute conformity. Citizens of this world do not have the freedom to choose their occupation. In fact, these citizens have no rights. They cannot speak freely, they do not enjoy any personal freedoms or privacy, and the media is aggressively censored. In 20th century the global community witnessed a tremendous amount of chaos. World Wars, and ideologically driven proxy wars brought destruction, and decline to many great countries. One would think that many people have died in these wars, but it is shocking to note that four times as many people have died at the hands of their government than in these wars. The governments in today’s society have brainwashed their citizens into believing everything their leader says and thinks is correct and everything else is wrong. This can sometimes be known as a totalitarian government. George Orwell’s novel 1984 revolves around totalitarianism. The members of the party in Oceania are taught and required to worship their leader Big Brother whether they believe in him or not. In the novel 1984, George Orwell shows the problems and the hatred with a totalitarian government through his use of symbolism, situational irony, and indirect characterization.

Each of these events have different levels of totalitarianism but show that society does not learn from past events. Arendt explains that totalitarianism is formed when governments have emerged as a result of the institutionalisation of terror and violence (D 'Entreves, 2014). However since Stalinism and Nazism there has not been a period of time where terror or violence has been extinguished, whether it be state racism, nationalism or terrorism global society has not transitioned away from totalitarianism.
