In this video part 1, Sandel discuss the problem of libertarian view on government. One of the libertarian view of government is that the government should never be redistribution of tax, which mean tax the rich and give it to the poor. The reason is because libertarian believe in individual right and that a person should have the freedom to live a life that they wanted to live that if a person earn those money through hard work, then taking money away from them through simply having them to pay more tax is theft and imprisonment that means that simply having people to pay more tax, means that they are not funding the government voluntarily but by force and that we are not belong to our self but instead we are imprison to a society. This lead to a discussion of whether government should tax the rich and use those money to help the poor. In my opinion, I believe that government should tax the rich and use those money to help the poor. One reason is because the rich people is getting more from the government than people from the poor people. One such things is “Taxes on investment dividends and capital gains currently max out at about 24 percent when you add in a Medicare surtax that applies to some investment income. But the top income tax rate is 39.6 percent. So investment income is taxed at a much lower rate than regular income.”(Badger, 1). Therefore if the rich are getting more from the government than the poor, shouldn’t the rich be tax more, since they have more money
The obvious questions to this position are at what income levels should taxes begin to increase? Also, how much should their taxes increase? We know that high tax rates can be detrimental to an economy, largely due to the deadweight loss that the taxes impose on the markets. Combine this with the fact that the government has proven to be inefficient with the tax revenue it currently has at its disposal, and it is hard to find a suitable argument for why taxes should be increased on the wealthiest
Libertarians reject Utilitarianism’s concerns for the total social well-being. While utilitarians are willing to restrict the liberty of some for the greater good, libertarians believe that justice consists solely of respect for individual property. If an individual isn’t doing something that interferes with anyone else’s liberty, then no person, group, or government should disturb he or she from living life as desired (not even if doing so would maximize social happiness). They completely disregard concern for an overall social well-being. Using a libertarian’s perspective, a state that taxes its better-off citizens to support the less fortunate ones violates their rights because they have not willingly chosen to do so. In that same context, a theory that forces capitalists to invest in people and natural capital is immoral. Nevertheless, libertarians encourage that people help those in need, as it is a good thing.
If the government starts doing that it would be fairer because everyone is getting the right amount of tax based on their income. But right now the rich and poor have to pay the same amount of money and it doesn’t matter about their income. Right now the rich should not really care about the taxes because they are rich and it doesn’t matter to them. But the taxes do matter to the poor people because they have really less amount of income and a large amount of taxes will affect them. The government has all records of people’s incomes and other information, so if the government makes a rule that the people with more income pay more taxes and the people with less income pay fewer taxes, it would be much better. But the taxes go to the government and the government makes the America better by making newer roads, better environment, and
I agree with the second article. The article is called “Three Cheers for Income Inequality” and is written by Richard A. Epstein. “Three Cheers for Income Inequality” is about reducing income inequality through tax policies. In order to do so, Richard Epstein discussed giving wealth to the lower class citizens. Richard Epstein says that taking from the wealthy would help and be more beneficial to those who do not have as much. This would make the income line more equal. The money would come through the taxes. (260).
The rich should not be taxed more. Increasing tax rates for the upper class will not solve the present inequality problem. The wealthy americans should be expected the same amount of taxes as the poor for equality. Those who earn more shouldn't help the less fortunate because they worked harder for the money they earn.
The tax system in the United States has changed throughout the years, with many attempts to make it "fair" or "equal" while at the same time generating enough income for the United States government to thrive. It is a complex issue, and a controversial one at that. While it may not be possible for our tax system to ever be fair, it is important to make sure it doesn 't put more financial stress and pressure on one group than on another.
Why shouldn’t the wealthiest of Americans pay a higher percentage of their income for taxes? Certainly, things would get better if the wealthy paid more taxes. This philosophy is why welfare continues to exist today. People worry more about what is right for the other person without looking at themselves and taking responsibility. It is overrun with individuals who prefer to be on welfare than to work hard and contribute to society. This doesn’t mean welfare is not needed, but that it should not be a career. It offers no permanent solution, but only prevents a real solution from being realized. So why should the wealthy pay a higher percentage of taxes just because they can afford it? They work hard, so shouldn’t they be allowed to keep what they earn? This is not an example of scrooge-like behavior, but that hard work should have its rewards. The way to a better life should start with hard work and the desire for independence from government support. This would help people regain personal pride and become productive members of society, rather than a drain on its resources. It is not a crime for the wealthiest to earn high incomes. Shouldn’t hard work pay off? Why be penalized by paying a higher percentage of your income when you worked hard to make that income? Simpler solutions are required.
I agree with distribution of wealth. If you're rich you have the money to give for taxes other than poor people Poor people don't have the money to give money to taxes they are working as hard as they can to put a meal on the table for there kids they don't have money to pay for taxes when they have to pay all the other bills like electricity and water. If you have money to buy a lamborghini you have money for takes.
Constitutionally, the government has the right to tax its citizens. The idea of the states working together to defend against enemies and for the general welfare of the
Admittedly allowing a special tax to redistribute wealth would temporarily give relief to those in lower classes but it would not solve the issue. This to me could be compared to a few years ago when tax payers received additional refunds. I recall watching a news interview with a family to get an extra $600. The mother said she would pay off debt while the father stated he wanted to make purchases, that one household was a clear depiction of how the U.S. would be
Yes, I believe that individuals making over a quarter of a million dollars a year should pay a higher rate in taxes. Currently the United States is experiencing a slow economic recovery from the previous recession and the more fortunate members of society could contribute more to strengthen the country's financial status. It is not unreasonable since the U.S. is already incredibly low by international standards. The average tax rate on American's is 27.3% which is below almost all OECD countries as well as way below the average of 36.2% (Tax Policy Center, 2010). Raising taxes on the wealthiest Americans is estimated to help 114 million households including lower tax rates, an expanded Child Tax Credit, and marriage penalty relief steps that together will prevent the typical family of four from seeing a $2,200 tax increase next year (Office of the Press Secretary, 2013).
It is unethical to let someone who makes more than enough money get a tax break, when middle class families who are possibly struggling have to pay more. Businesses who potentially make millions can spend more on taxes like everyone else. “The government gives to corporations and rich citizens with the assistance given to poor citizens.” - Emma Wincup Some families can’t even afford to put food on the table because of
The libertarian in me completely believes that as democracy’s next generation we need not have obligations to a collective body, that individual rights must be preserved and that social justice should encompass people from every background, however; after analyzing the true definition of democracy I have come to the conclusion that that the former two are true but, the my initial belief has changed not because I have forsaken libertarian ideas but because I have fully integrated my libertarianism with my Christian faith. When looking strictly at individual rights and John Locke’s Natural Rights, which are a man has the right to life, liberty and property, then the idea of the state taxing people to support collective programs and using the collective to provide for the general welfare of its citizens then taxation can easily be labeled as theft. Taxation goes further than theft, and while theft is bad, the reasons beyond theft have changed my viewpoint as a Christian
Even with our flawed tax system, the incomes that delivered by our taxes has strengthen our nation’s economy. As a result, it has reserve the essential goods
What do you think would happen if the rich paid more taxes? Would there be a better economy or would it be worst, maybe even stay the same. Increasing the taxes would help out our economy in a few ways. one way that it would help out our economy is that not only would there be less of a concentration of profit at the top of our social ladder there would be more revenue for the funding of civil union jobs. Also not to mention causing the bigger corporations to have to pay more so they would be unable to escape with the majority of the illegal activity they do today. Lastly if the government were to crack down on offshoring it would help with collecting taxes and the money would return to the people and back into circulation for our economy. Here are some reasons why the rich should pay higher taxes.
