This essay will discuss my area of research for the industrial revolution. ‘The era known as the Industrial Revolution was a period in which fundamental changes occurred in agriculture, textile and metal manufacture, transportation, economic policies and the social structure in England’ (Joseph A. Montagne 2015). My key question that I based my research on is “To what extent did the changes in industry in great Brittan have a negative Effect on family life and society in general from 1750-1850? My research will also discuss my 3 other key questions which I will discuss furtherly in my essay.

In the rush to construct houses, many were built too quickly in neighbouring rows. The houses often had a tiny backyard which had an outdoor communal toilet, shared by up to 5 families. In the first 60 years of the industrial revolution ‘poorhouses’ where set up by the government. “Our intention is to make the workhouses as much like prisons as possible.” Another said, “Our object is to establish a discipline as severe and repulsive as to make them a terror to the poor and prevent them from entering” (Thompson 267). The industrial revolution was a time where modern inventions where brought in to replace the old way of living. Without the industrial revolution, we might still have been making our own clothes and growing our own food. Inventions such as electricity, supermarkets, and new ways of transport where introduced, and without these who knows where we would be. The end of this period also introduced such things as women’s rights, children’s rights and equal rights. Without these issues being resolved in the late years of the revolution, we still might be living in a world with no rights. The industrial revolution also had some long term negative impacts such as, diseases, environmental issues, homelessness and overpopulated
