“Dreams don’t work unless you do.” In The Great Gatsby we see this quote, by John C. Maxwell, uphold itself. “He stretched out his arms toward the dark water in a curious way, and, far as I was from him, I could have sworn he was trembling. Involuntarily I glanced seaward – and distinguished nothing except a single green light, minute and far away, that might have been the end of a dock.” (20-21). The reader can identify that it is obtainable to want a dream, but harder to achieve it. Gatsby one day goes after his American dream and was crushed like every American conveys to be. She impersonates a happy housewife. All the while she is overcome by depression. She has everything she needs, one would say. She married into money what more would she want? “in June she married Tom Buchanan of Chicago with more pomp and circumstance than Louisville ever knew before” (75). Money is not enough for Daisy. She gets tired of the never ending cycle of uninteresting old life. “"What'll we do with ourselves this afternoon?" cried Daisy, "and the day after that, and the next thirty years?" "Don't be morbid," Jordan said. "Life starts all over again when it gets crisp in the fall."” (118). So many business people and athletes get caught up in this American dream. “A suggestion that she had moved her ball from a bad lie in the semi-final round.” (57). This quote not only shows how the American dream can change you; but also how you cannot attain the American dream without cheating. Again, the reader can see how the American dream is unattainable, “She was incurably dishonest. She wasn't able to endure being at a disadvantage and, given this unwillingness, I suppose she had begun dealing in subterfuges when she was very young in order to keep that cool, insolent smile turned to the world and yet satisfy the demands of her hard, jaunty body”
